Full text beschikbaar met HU-account. Since the 2010s, various companies have begun to manufacture wearable smartwatch devices, but the current sales of these products are not impressive. This study investigates how the limitations of the smartwatch are related to perceptual discomforts. Theoretically, this study evaluates the claim that the discomfort that users appear to have with the smartwatch stem from failed remediation. Users perceive the smartwatch more as a set of functional sensors rather than a watch or smartphone. Specifically, from the remediation perspective, the authors asked how users perceive the functions of the smartwatch. This study used dynamic topic modeling for topics on the smartwatch on Reddit. This study reports that the smartwatch has failed to provide a proper way to use the remediated content that it provides. Suggestions for future studies are addressed.

This article interrogates platform-specific bias in the contemporary algorithmic media landscape through a comparative study of the representation of pregnancy on the Web and social media. Online visual materials such as social media content related to pregnancy are not void of bias, nor are they very diverse. The case study is a cross-platform analysis of social media imagery for the topic of pregnancy, through which distinct visual platform vernaculars emerge. The authors describe two visualization methods that can support comparative analysis of such visual vernaculars: the image grid and the composite image. While platform-specific perspectives range from lists of pregnancy tips on Pinterest to pregnancy information and social support systems on Twitter, and pregnancy humour on Reddit, each of the platforms presents a predominantly White, able-bodied and heteronormative perspective on pregnancy.

A long time ago, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, a sad, dark thing clawed its way into our social media feeds: depression memes. These memes, shared on social platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, 4chan, and TikTok, date back to as early as 2016, although it’s hard to tell precisely. What we do know is that people (meme makers) have been saying to their audience (users with or without clinical depression and/or anxiety symptoms) that it’s okay to feel horrible and that if our therapist asks ‘What do we do when we feel this way?’ we do not reply ‘Add to cart’. The online world has given us clearance to lift the taboo (slightly) on mental health issues while simultaneously educating some boomers along the way, resulting in many users using memes ever since as the life raft they can be.

De gewenste verduurzaming van de economie vraagt om het realiseren van telkens nieuwe innovaties. Uit praktijkcasussen blijkt dat met name duurzame innovaties op het gebied van technologie, bedrijfsmiddelen of mensen, nadrukkelijk vragen om complexere bedrijfseconomische afwegingen. Deze afwegingen vinden echter plaats binnen het klassieke raamwerk van kosten en baten. Maatschappij en ondernemers zijn dan ook geholpen met concrete handvatten. In deze zoektocht naar zulke handvatten in de praktijk komen vijf factoren naar voren die het succes van investeringen in duurzame innovaties bepalen, met name: de maatschappelijke baten, de samenwerking voor ketenefficiëntie, de netwerkonzekerheden, de financiële responsiviteit en de persoonlijke contacten.

In tegenstelling tot de uitgebreide aandacht voor corporate governance is goed bestuur en toezicht in het midden- en kleinbedrijf (hierna mkb) verrassenderwijs een onderbelicht onderwerp, zowel vanuit de wetenschap als vanuit het bedrijfsleven en overheid. In de praktijk is er vanuit mkb-ondernemers de nodige weerstand om hier tijd en aandacht aan te besteden, mede door een (ten onrechte) met governance geassocieerde vrees voor bureaucratisering. Op basis van exploratief onderzoek, onder andere bestaand uit een literatuurstudie, mini-casestudies bij vier ondernemingen, expert panels en interviews komen wij tot de conclusie dat een proactieve en op performance gerichte aanpak van goed mkb-bestuur kan bijdragen aan een succesvollere mkb-sector. In het verlengde daarvan hebben wij een model voor goed mkb-bestuur ontwikkeld, het Diamond-model. Dit model is een eerste aanzet om mkb-ondernemers en hun adviseurs middels een laagdrempelig en praktisch kader na te laten denken over goed mkb-bestuur en hen een structuur te bieden die hen daarin faciliteert. Hierbij wordt rekening gehouden met de relevante situationele factoren (contingenties). Wij hopen hiermee een bredere discussie over nut, noodzaak en vorm van goed mkb-bestuur op gang te brengen

Skyler White is a protagonist in the top-ranking television series Breaking Bad. She is also one of the most hated characters on television. This paper focuses on how the character of Skyler and Anna Gunn – the actor that plays her – are turned into a ‘composite celebrity’ in audience discussions. This is achieved by analysing threads on the social news website Reddit that specifically discuss Skyler. We discovered three main speaking positions: ‘savvy’ viewing; moral realism; and public shaming. This type of audience research may help further discussion on how celebrity culture is supported by neoliberal changes in the public sphere and caught up in the devaluation of professionalism and professional status – which, as will be shown, has especially dire consequences for professional women. Breaking Bad showcases predominantly masculine narratives. The derogation of its key female character therefore does not come as a surprise. However, a feminist defence of both the character and the actor – although a minority perspective – is also voiced. This article reveals how the interlinking fields of celebrity gossip and television criticism are a space of vibrant and sometimes frightening discussion in which a neo-conservative gender agenda is simultaneously asserted and contested
