The 21st century’s rapidly compounding crises – from climate and ecological breakdown to extreme social inequities of power and opportunity – make it irrefutably clear that the global economic system must be transformed if humanity and the rest of life on Earth are to thrive. Doughnut Economics provides an increasingly recognised compass for such a thriving future, and is focused on meeting the needs of all people within the means of the living planet, by creating economies that are regenerative and distributive by design. What are the implications for the role and transformation of business, if it is to be part of this future?This paper explores how the deep design of business – through a company’s Purpose, Networks, Governance, Ownership, and Finance – powerfully shapesits strategic decisions and operational impacts, and ultimately determines whether or not businesses can transform to become part of a regenerative and distributive future. By diving into five layers of deep design, this paper reveals both design blockages that prevent transformative action, and design innovations that can unlock its possibility. In addition, this paper recognises that industry-level and system-wide transformations are crucial for turning the inheritance of a degenerative and divisive economic system into the beginnings of a regenerative and distributive one.
At the age of a failing economic system and undeniable evidence of the effects humankind has had over the planet, it is necessary to look for alternatives to the way we live locally. This article explores the use of designing narratives and metanarratives to co-create imaginaries serving as the needed alternatives. This research starts by considering the historical factors to understand how industrialisation and the loss of traditional practices created a culture of disconnection from Nature in the Girona area, but also looks at why people start now reconnecting with it. The analysis is the foundation for speculative design practices to co-create a new local narrative of connection and regeneration. The project adopted the Integrative Worldviews Framework and used paradoxes to create possible future worldviews based on historical factors and literature. Citizens participated in conversational future-visioning workshops to develop and evaluate their local imagery of the previously created worldviews. This conversation-based exercise evidenced the potential of paradoxes in destructive futures to create imaginaries of regeneration. These imaginaries merge and form future stories. From the future narratives, the practice created cultural artefacts embodying a new culture of connection based on storytelling, traditional jobs, and a mythological understanding of Nature. Finally, as observed at the end of the project, these artefacts allow citizens to adopt them as their culture and expand their current worldview.
Regenerative agriculture is increasingly seen as the way forward to safeguard soil fertility and with that economic, human and natural sustainability. The fashion industry, being very much reliant on inputs from the agricultural sector, can play a pivotal role in promoting regenerative practices. In order to do so however it needs to radically rethink its business model, or else it will not be able to reap all the possible benefits.
"Speak the Future" presents a novel test case at the intersection of scientific innovation and public engagement. Leveraging the power of real-time AI image generation, the project empowers festival participants to verbally describe their visions for a sustainable and regenerative future. These descriptions are instantly transformed into captivating imagery using SDXL Turbo, fostering collective engagement and tangible visualisation of abstract sustainability concepts. This unique interplay of speech recognition, AI, and projection technology breaks new ground in public engagement methods. The project offers valuable insights into public perceptions and aspirations for sustainability, as well as understanding the effectiveness of AI-powered visualisation and regenerative applications of AI. Ultimately, this will serve as a springboard for PhD research that will aim to understand How AI can serve as a vehicle for crafting regenerative futures? By employing real-time AI image generation, the project directly tests its effectiveness in fostering public engagement with sustainable futures. Analysing participant interaction and feedback sheds light on how AI-powered visualisation tools can enhance comprehension and engagement. Furthermore, the project fosters public understanding and appreciation of research. The interactive and accessible nature of "Speak the Future" demystifies the research process, showcasing its relevance and impact on everyday life. Moreover, by directly involving the public in co-creating visual representations of their aspirations, the project builds an emotional connection and sense of ownership, potentially leading to continued engagement and action beyond the festival setting. "Speak the Future" promises to be a groundbreaking initiative, bridging the gap between scientific innovation and public engagement in sustainability discourse. By harnessing the power of AI for collective visualisation, the project not only gathers valuable data for researchers but also empowers the public to envision and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
