Sometimes religion and science are mentioned in one breath; both provide an explanatory framework for phenomena like uncertainty, chance or fate. In the meantime, science, or rather technology, has become a world religion. It’s a world religion, because technology connects: religion comes from the Latin “ Relegere” (literally re-assemble, connect).

Culture has freed us to some extent from nature, first through language and religion, and almost simultaneously through technology. From the control of the fire and the first tools until now - smart technology - technological development has taken a long cultural path, with many challenges and possibilities. The CBS report also shows that the average ecological footprint of Dutch residents is still far too large. It is entirely right that we allow the refugees to share in "our" wealth. In a globalized world, looking away is not an option. In a positive psychology, reciprocity characterizes our humanity. But at the same time we must guard our values: equality between man and woman, love for man is not tied dogmatically to sexuality and ... there is nothing wrong with the occasional drink! Do we dare to explore the hypothesis that technology shouldn't necessarily play the main role in our human future? It's time to face this discrepancy. Technology became our faith, but it is certainly not a joyful faith. With every new "solution", comes the need for new "solutions" to mitigate the previously undetected unwanted side effects. It's like an arms race, a technology race. Because unlike traditional religions, global tech religion creates matter. Even a virtual world (the metaverse) is material. The man-made mass (textile, plastic, asphalt, concrete, glass, etc.) already weighs 1.2 times the mass of all organic material on earth (all trees, animals, etc.). Every new pollution requires heavier treatment, every dike breach requires heavier dikes. It won't end until we stop leaving to “think different” (Apple) to technology. In the article it is argued that the Inner Development Goals provide a framework fthrough 5 psychological factors - being, thinking, relation to the world, collaboration and adapting - to tackle the sustainability problems.
