BackgroundScientific software incorporates models that capture fundamental domain knowledge. This software is becoming increasingly more relevant as an instrument for food research. However, scientific software is currently hardly shared among and (re-)used by stakeholders in the food domain, which hampers effective dissemination of knowledge, i.e. knowledge transfer.Scope and approachThis paper reviews selected approaches, best practices, hurdles and limitations regarding knowledge transfer via software and the mathematical models embedded in it to provide points of reference for the food community.Key findings and conclusionsThe paper focusses on three aspects. Firstly, the publication of digital objects on the web, which offers valorisation software as a scientific asset. Secondly, building transferrable software as way to share knowledge through collaboration with experts and stakeholders. Thirdly, developing food engineers' modelling skills through the use of food models and software in education and training.
The transition to a biobased economy necessitates utilizing renewable resources as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Bioconversion is a way to produce many green chemicals from renewables, e.g., biopolymers like PHAs. However, fermentation and bioconversion processes mostly rely on expensive, and highly refined pure substrates. The utilization of crude fractions from biorefineries, especially herbaceous lignocellulosic feedstocks, could significantly reduce costs. This presentation shows the microbial production of PHA from such a crude stream by a wild-type thermophilic bacterium Schlegelella thermodepolymerans [1]. Specifically, it uses crude xylose-rich fractions derived from a newly developed biorefinery process for grassy biomasses (the ALACEN process). This new stepwise mild flow-through biorefinery approach for grassy lignocellulosic biomass allows the production of various fractions: a fraction containing esterified aromatics, a monomeric xylose-rich stream, a glucose fraction, and a native-like lignin residue [2]. The crude xylose-rich fraction was free of fermentation-inhibiting compounds meaning that the bacterium S.thermodepolymerans could effectively use it for the production of one type of PHA, polyhydroxybutyrate. Almost 90% of the xylose in the refined wheat straw fraction was metabolized with simultaneous production of PHA, matching 90% of the PHA production per gram of sugars, comparable to PHA yields from commercially available xylose. In addition to xylose, S. thermodepolymerans converted oligosaccharides with a xylose backbone (xylans) into fermentable xylose, and subsequently utilized the xylose as a source for PHA production. Since the xylose-rich hydrolysates from the ALACEN process also contain some oligomeric xylose and minor hemicellulose-derived sugars, optimal valorization of the C5-fractions derived from the refinery process can be obtained using S. thermodepolymerans. This opens the way for further exploration of PHA production from C5-fractions out of a variety of herbaceous lignocellulosic biomasses using the ALACEN process combined with S. thermodepolymerans. This study investigates the effect of position on build-plate on the dimensional deviations for stainless steel 316 L samples made by laser powder-bed fusion. To understand the effect of sample position on the build-plate (substrate) with respect to shrinkage and dimensional deviation, 36 samples in a 6 × 6 array were printed with three repetitions. The value of the diameter was measured at 10 points along the vertical axis in the perpendicular and parallel directions to the flow of the assisted gas. The results of the experiment show that there is shrinkage in both directions with respect to the gas flow. However, the extent of deviation in the perpendicular direction to the gas flow is greater compared to the parallel diameters for the samples. This can be related to the pressure of assisted gas and the difference in cooling rate corresponding to the position of the samples on the building substrate. The hypothesis is proved by conducting further experiments regulating the amount of gas flow by adjusting the individual nozzle for the gas flow to the build chamber. The reason for these deviations is speculated to be related to the rheology of the melt pool. This research could lay a solid foundation for the future development of a compensation strategy to nullify the effect of shrinkage and dimensional deviations on parts made using the laser powder-bed fusion technique. The results of shrinkage of the columns appear to suggest that there is an effect on the circularity from the assisting gas.
