The Best of Both Worlds: Success factors of Turkish-Dutch innovative entrepreneurs In recent years, a number of countries, among them the Netherlands, attach great importance to stimulating the economic development in the country, by promoting entrepreneurship in general and within the ethnic and cultural entrepreneurial groups in particular. Innovation is generally the result of an interactive process involving synergy between the diverse backgrounds and characteristics. Based on a qualitative research, this article provides an overview of insights in the critical success factors of Turkish-Dutch innovative entrepreneurs in the Netherlands. The success factors of ethnic entrepreneurs are approached in this study from three different dimensions: individual factors, social factors, and environmental factors. The individual factors are presented as personality traits and personal motivations. The social factors are discussed from the perspective of social networks, socio-cultural and socio-economic characteristics. As for environmental factors, they are divided into regional characteristics as well as the availability of resources and the presence of opportunities. Turkish-Dutch entrepreneurs, also called “ethnic entrepreneurs”, appear proficient in linking different innovation opportunities to their own strengths. They are operating better in both worlds, and are successfully navigating between the two cultures. This article also formulates several suggestions for the Dutch government, business world and educational institutions to stimulate innovation. SAMENVATTING Het beste van beide werelden: Succesfactoren van Turks-Nederlandse innovatieve ondernemers De laatste jaren hechten vele landen, onder andere Nederland, er groot belang aan om de economische ontwikkelingen op een hoger niveau te tillen door ondernemerschap in het algemeen, en binnen de etnische en culturele groepen in het bijzonder, te stimuleren. Innovatie is een gevolg van een interactief proces waarbij synergie ontstaat tussen de diverse achtergronden en kenmerken. Gebaseerd op een kwalitatief onderzoek worden in dit artikel, aan de hand van drie verschillende dimensies, te weten individuele, sociale en omgevingsfactoren, de succesfactoren van Turks-Nederlandse innovatieve ondernemers inzichtelijk gemaakt. De Turks-Nederlandse ondernemers, ook wel “etnische ondernemers” genoemd, blijken bedreven te zijn in het koppelen van innovatiekansen aan hun eigen sterke punten. Ze komen beter tot hun recht in beide werelden, en navigeren op succesvolle wijze tussen de twee culturen door. Dit artikel formuleert een aantal aanbevelingen voor de Nederlandse overheid, het bedrijfsleven en de klanten.

We komen kansarme gebieden zowel in steden tegen als in rurale regio's. Ze delen de trend dat er een een onwenselijke verschraling plaatsvindt van publieke voorzieningen. Ook is er sprake van onwenselijke verschillen in ontplooiing. Onderzoekers van de Vrije Universiteit en de Hogeschool van Amsterdam bepleiten fijnmazig maatwerk per gebied om tot oplossingen te komen. Zodat de grootst mogelijke groep mensen er baat bij heeft.

There is an increasing awareness that the landscape around cities can contribute significantly to the well-being of urban citizens. Various studies and experiences in the Netherlands and other countries show that the combination of agriculture with care and education has great potential. The number of care farms has increased from 75 in 1999 to 500 in 2005. In urban areas, a diversity of groups can benefit from care farms or other types of social services in the rural area. It concerns among others, people with mental problems, with (chronic) psychiatric demands, with addiction problems, elderly, children with behavior and/or psychological problems and long term unemployed. The city of Amsterdam recognizes the unique and valuable qualities of the rural area and its potential for the well-being of its citizens. In and around Amsterdam various organizations have initiated innovative projects that connect urban demands with agricultural entrepreneurs. A transition to a new kind of agriculture and landscape contributing to health and well-being of urban citizens is possible.

Het tegengaan van hittestress is een van de grote uitdagingen bij het leefbaar houden van de stad. Door klimaatverandering neemt het aantal extreem warme dagen toe. Daarnaast is het in de stad doorgaans warmer dan in de omringende rurale gebieden, het zogenaamde hitte-eiland-effect. Hoge temperaturen leiden tot hitte-stress bij mensen, met negatieve gevolgen voor de gezondheid, met name van kwetsbare groepen. Dagen met een aanzienlijke kans op hittestress komen in ons land meermaals per jaar voor, zeker in stedelijk gebied. Het aantal dagen met hittestress en de intensiteit van de hitte zal in de toekomst verder toenemen. Klimaatadaptatie van het stedelijk gebied is daarom een noodzaak geworden.Groen is een zeer effectief middel om de stad meer klimaatbestendig te maken. Het effect van groen is echter afhankelijk van het type groen en de omgeving waarin dat groen staat. Concrete richtlijnen voor effectief groen in verschillende wijktypen ontbreken tot nog toe.

Twee vrouwen. De één is hoogleraar sociale psychologie aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en heeft zich onder meer ten doel gesteld om wetenschappelijke kennis voor een groot publiek toegankelijk te maken. De ander stond vijftien jaar geleden aan de wieg van het onderzoek aan De Haagse Hogeschool en is daar nu de eerste associate lector. De toepassing van kennis verbindt Roos Vonk en Ineke van der Meule. Bij alle verschillen die er ook zijn. Amidst evolving landscapes and contemporary pressures affecting both the arts and rural living, policymakers and artists alike are directing more attention to rural and non-urban cultural practices. Participatory art forms, such as music, offer a unique potential to (re)connect people with each other and their surroundings by fostering reflection and reshaping societal perspectives. However, developing or attempting to integrate existing and new practices into rural communities can pose challenges for artists, especially when coming from outside these locales. Moreover, there is a notable absence of clear and sustainable pathways for artists to engage in participatory practices within rural settings, and research on this subject is limited.This report discusses the results of a case study which took place as part of the broader Sound Soils research project – a practice-oriented initiative aimed at exploring opportunities, roles and approaches for professional musicians to contribute to rural life in the northern Netherlands. In this case study, we aimed to understand the unique qualities and cultural lives of villages in the North-Netherlands region. To do so, we conducted immersive visits to three villages and spoke to locals about the existing cultural fabric of their village, as well as the current concerns and wishes of their inhabitants, both in general and in relation to music activities.Alongside providing other valuable insights into village life in our region more generally, our findings help identify potential ways for musicians to develop (new) collaborative music practices in rural communities, with a focus on forms that are in dialogue with existing local interests and community life. In this way, we seek approaches that have a higher potential for sustainability by being embedded into existing community structures and cultural practices. In this report, we explain the purpose, methodologies, and main findings of the three villages case study and discuss how these results may lead to follow-up research-in-practice projects in the villages studied and others like them.
