The Serendipity Tables projects connects youngsters and students with the wider community and enhances entrepreneurial mindsets. The Serendipity Table has been approved as good practice. Moreover it scored high on the creativity and applicability aspect.

A school and especially a university must operate efficiently, while also offering innovation space. In meeting these requirements, it can neither leave 100% on lean, nor inspiration (think of the art schools half a century ago). Companies need continuity. Serendipity may facilitate this. However, sometimes they have to be able to exploit new opportunities at lightning speed. In those cases, continuity can be fatal, because it removes agility.

Recommenders play a significant role in our daily lives, making decisions for users on a regular basis. Their widespread adoption necessitates a thorough examination of how users interact with recommenders and the algorithms that drive them. An important form of interaction in these systems are algorithmic affordances: means that provide users with perceptible control over the algorithm by, for instance, providing context (‘find a movie for this profile’), weighing criteria (‘most important is the main actor’), or evaluating results (‘loved this movie’). The assumption is that these algorithmic affordances impact interaction qualities such as transparency, trust, autonomy, and serendipity, and as a result, they impact the user experience. Currently, the precise nature of the relation between algorithmic affordances, their specific implementations in the interface, interaction qualities, and user experience remains unclear. Subjects that will be discussed during the workshop, therefore, include but are not limited to the impact of algorithmic affordances and their implementations on interaction qualities, balances between cognitive overload and transparency in recommender interfaces containing algorithmic affordances; and reasons why research into these types of interfaces sometimes fails to cross the research-practice gap and are not landing in the design practice. As a potential solution the workshop committee proposes a library of examples of algorithmic affordances design patterns and their implementations in recommender interfaces enriched with academic research concerning their impact. The final part of the workshop will be dedicated to formulating guiding principles for such a library.

Uit de geschiedenis en uit vele bronnen, blijkt dat bij bijvoorbeeld wetenschap, literatuur, kunst en muziek de meest interessante resultaten het gevolg zijn van allerhande toevalligheden. Dit wordt aangeduid met de term serendipiteit. Serendipiteit is dan de kunst van het vinden van iets waardevols, terwijl je daar niet naar op zoek bent. Maar het houdt wel in dat het belangrijk is om alert te zijn en open te staan voor toevalligheden en signalen. Het SerendipiteitSpel laat spelers op speelse wijze ervaren dat de belangrijkste ontdekkingen in het leven, in loopbanen, in relaties, niet gepland zijn. Maar zijn ze toevallig? Of kun je het toeval leren te ontdekken voordat het je toe valt?

Sociaal werk is een kunde, vergelijkbaar met gezondheidskunde en onderwijskunde. Dat wil zeggen een interdisciplinaire integratie van kennisontwikkeling en praktijkverbetering vanuit een eigenstandige focus. Belangrijke toeleverende disciplines voor sociaal werk zijn met name economie, ethiek, gezondheidskunde, kennistheorie, pedagogiek, psychologie, recht en sociologie. Als onderdeel van een landelijk project gericht op het vaststellen van de gemeenschappelijke theoretische kennisbasis voor sociaal-werkopleidingen interviewden wij, de auteurs van dit artikel, academische specialisten over toeleverende disciplines. De geïnterviewden benoemen niet alleen een onderscheidende disciplinaire blik die relevant is voor sociaal werk, maar onderscheiden binnen zo’n blik ook meerdere paradigmatische perspectieven. Daarbij valt op dat wel vaker één perspectief binnen de disciplinaire blik een bijzondere positie inneemt. Redenen daarvoor zijn dat zo’n perspectief een meer omvattend karakter bezit (maatschappelijk, historisch, internationaal, intercultureel), de grenzen van het vakgebied overschrijdt (interdisciplinair) en/of een expliciete (ethische, politieke) stellingname insluit (engagement).
