Smart speakers are heralded to make everyday life more convenient in households around the world. These voice-activated devices have become part of intimate domestic contexts in which users interact with platforms.This chapter presents a dualstudy investigating the privacy perceptions of smart speaker users and non-users. Data collected in in-depth interviews and focus groups with Dutch users and non-users show that they make sense of privacy risks through imagined sociotechnical affordances. Imagined affordances emerge with the interplay between user expectations, technologies, and designer intentions. Affordances like controllability, assistance, conversation, linkability, recordability, and locatability are associated with privacy considerations. Viewing this observation in the light of privacy calculus theory, we provide insights into how users’ positive experiences of the control over and assistance in the home offered by smart speakers outweighs privacy concerns. On the contrary, non-users reject the devices because of fears that recordability and locatability would breach the privacy of their homes by tapping data to platform companies. Our findings emphasize the dynamic nature of privacy calculus considerations and how these interact with imagined affordances; establishing a contrast between rational and emotional responses relating to smart speaker use.Emotions play a pivotal role in adoption considerations whereby respondents balance fears of unknown malicious actors against trust in platform companies.This study paves the way for further research that examines how surveillance in the home is becoming increasingly normalized by smart technologies.

It is crucial that ASR systems can handle the wide range of variations in speech of speakers from different demographic groups, with different speaking styles, and of speakers with (dis)abilities. A potential quality-of-service harm arises when ASR systems do not perform equally well for everyone. ASR systems may exhibit bias against certain types of speech, such as non-native accents, different age groups and gender. In this study, we evaluate two widely-used neural network-based architectures: Wav2vec2 and Whisper on potential biases for Dutch speakers. We used the Dutch speech corpus JASMIN as a test set containing read and conversational speech in a human-machine interaction setting. The results reveal a significant bias against non-natives, children and elderly and some regional dialects. The ASR systems generally perform slightly better for women than for men.

Smart Materials, book of ideas is het resultaat van en unieke samenwerking. Deskundigen en leveranciers van smart materials, designers van drie Twentse ontwerpbureaus en studenten Industrieel Product Ontwerpen van Saxion twee intensieve dagen met veel plezier samengewerkt aan dit “Book of Ideas”. Het project “Smart Materials, Book of Ideas” is een van de deelprojecten van het RAAK project “Materialen in Ontwerp” dat van januari 2007 tot medio 2008 gelopen heeft bij het Saxion Kenniscentrum Design en Technologie. Het doel van dit project is het expliciet onder de aandacht brengen van de mogelijkheden van een nieuwe klasse materialen voor het MKB: de “Smart Materials”. Alles is “smart” tegenwoordig en iedereen heeft het over nieuwe mogelijkheden, maar over wat voor materialen en eigenschappen hebben we het eigenlijk? Het is de bedoeling niet alleen een droge opsomming te geven van de eigenschappen en mogelijkheden van smart materials. De mogelijkheden die deze nieuwe materialen kunnen bieden worden tastbaar gemaakt door allerlei creatieve toepassingen te laten zien in (verbeterde) bestaande producten en geheel nieuwe concepten. Op deze wijze wordt geïllustreerd hoe deze nieuwe materialen kunnen bijdragen aan de functionaliteit van een product. De creatieve toepassingen zijn het resultaat van de brainstorm-tweedaagse met materiaaldeskundigen, designers en studenten ‘Industrieel Product Ontwerpen’ (IPO). Met dit boekwerkje wil het Saxion Kenniscentrum Design en Technologie bereiken dat productontwerpers en met name het MKB geïnteresseerd raakt in de mogelijkheden die smart materials direct of in toekomst kunnen bieden. Er ligt voor de bedrijven een grote kans om met deze nieuwe materialen succesvolle innovatieve producten te ontwikkelen.

In 2021, Citython editions were held for the European cities of Eindhoven (Netherlands), Bilbao and Barcelona (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), and Lublin (Poland). Within this project, BUAS contributed to the organization of CITYTHON Eindhoven in cooperation with CARNET (an initiative by CIT UPC) and City of Eindhoven – an event which gives young talent the opportunity to work with mentors and experts for the development of innovative urban solutions. Participants of CITYTHON Eindhoven worked on three challenges:- Traffic safety in school zones - Travel to the campus- Make the city healthy The event took place between 18 May and 2 June 2021 with various experts, for example from ASML, City of Eindhoven and University of Amsterdam, giving inspirational talks and mentoring students throughout the ideation and solutions development process. The teams presented their solutions during the Dutch Technology Week and the winners were announced by Monique List-de Roos (Alderman Mobility and Transport, City of Eindhoven) on 2 June 2021. The role of BUAS within this project was to assist City of Eindhoven with the development of the challenges to be tackled by the participating teams, and find relevant speakers and mentors who would be supporting the students for the development of their solutions and jury members who would determine the winning teams. The project ended with a round table “Green and Safe Mobility for all: 5 Smart City(thon) Case studies” on November 17 organized as part of Smart City Expo World Congress 2021 in Barcelona.
