The aim of this study is to clarify how pre-service teachers perceive mentor teachers' use of mentoring skills. Sixty stimulated-recall interviews were conducted, each in connection with a previously recorded mentoring dialogue. A quantitative analysis showed that six types of mentoring skills appeared to be perceived by pre-service teachers as offering emotional support and five others as offering task assistance. After mentor teachers were trained in mentoring skills, shifts in their frequencies of use of distinct skills, as observed by independent raters, corresponded to a considerable extent with shifts in frequencies of pre-service teacher perceptions of mentor teachers' mentoring behaviour.
Professional development of teacher educators is an important topic, because teacher educators need to maintain and enhance their expertise in order to educate our future teachers (Kools & Koster, n.d. ; Dengerink, Lunenberg & Kools, 2015). How do teacher educators fulfil this task, especially within the hectic timeframe of everyday work? I asked four colleges to participate in a group to share their experiences, actions or behaviour in the organisation about their development in their profession of being a teacher educator. My purpose is to bring awareness and movement into that group. My research focusses on teacher educators in a large teacher education department in the Netherlands and the opportunities for action available to them. During this study we are currently creating a learning environment in which mutual cooperation increases the learning potential of all participants. In this group participants take or make time to learn, giving words to their scopes . Researcher and participants discuss and explore on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual understanding. By deploying methods borrowed from ‘Appreciative Inquiry’(Massenlink et al., 2008) the enthusiasm of a study group is raised and the intrinsic motivation of the participants stimulated. Our study group will convene three times. Its goal is to stimulate cooperation among teacher educators through optimisation of existing qualities, a method that could be described as empowerment, or a process of collective reinforcement ‘To learn’ involves experiencing that what one does really matters, as well as developing one’s own persona in the local community. Intervention, action, reflection and study group meetings alternate in the course of our research. In addition to audio and video recordings, data consists of reports drawn up on the basis of member checks. Data is analysed qualitatively by coding the interview texts and reports. After applying the codes, the researcher discusses the coding in a research group and with the participants of the study group (membercheck). Working collaboratively can offer learning challenges that catalyse growth as a professional, teacher educators become acquainted and approach each other from the perspective of their respective professional and functional responsibilities. This study offers perspectives for other teacher educators to recognize these possibilities in their own situation. Moreover the study offers a description of a way to organise collegial exchange. The research is related to the RDC professional development of teacher educators.
Within health education, many innovations are introduced, but are often not successful or sustainable. It is generally acknowledged that the quality of an educational system mainly depends on the quality of the teachers. Innovations will only succeed if teachers experience a climate that stimulates innovation and if they possess a sufficient level of innovative work behaviour. The current concept of innovative work behaviour (IWB) consists of three different behavioural dimensions: Idea generation, promotion and realization. However, the concept lacks attention for idea sustainability, which is necessary to embed the innovation deeply in daily practice. The limited attention for improving and continuation of an implemented idea is an often-mentioned explanation for the lack of the long-term success of innovations. Aim: This study aims at the development and validation of an instrument for innovative work behaviour that also includes the dimension idea sustainability, which has been overlooked by other researchers. Method: A questionnaire is developed, based on the questionnaire of Messmann (2012). Additional items are added to measure the new dimension idea sustainability. This new dimension contains the following concepts: Improving and optimising the innovation, disseminating the innovation in depth in the system of the organization and disseminating on a larger scale, and finally visualization of the benefits for stakeholders. The questionnaire is send to 400 teachers of a University for applied sciences in the South of The Netherlands. Results: 179 questionnaires were completed. It can be concluded that the scales to measure innovative work behaviour are strongly interrelated. There are significant correlations between the original dimensions and the added dimensions. The results for individual characteristics indicated that age and tenure did not correlate with any of the scales. Work experience, gender and also the faculty to which teachers belong did make some difference with regard to IWB. The results for job characteristics showed that the number of working hours, job position and the participation in research groups did make a difference with regard to IWB. In general, job characteristics showed more links with the various scales to measure innovative work behavior compared to the individual characteristics.
Onderzoek laat zien dat gedragsproblemen en leesproblemen vaak gelijktijdig voorkomen. Maar waar moet de leerkracht zich op richten; het gedrag of de leesprestaties? Voor de onderwijspraktijk is het relevant om uitsluitsel te krijgen over hoe deze problematiek in elkaar zit.Doel Uit veel onderzoek komt naar voren dat gedragsproblemen en leesproblemen bij veel kinderen min of meer gelijktijdig voorkomen. Leerkrachten zijn in deze situatie geneigd zich eerst te richten op het gedrag aangezien ze daar de meeste last van hebben. De primaire gerichtheid op gedragsproblemen uit zich ook in de grote vraag die er is naar begeleiding van leerkrachten bij het voorkomen en bestrijden van gedragsproblemen en de oververtegenwoordiging van studenten die bij de Master EN bij het Seminarium voor Orthopedagogiek de route Gedrag kiezen. De vraag is of deze gerichtheid terecht is en inderdaad tot de oplossing van de problemen leidt dan wel dat een achterliggend probleem de oorzaak is; namelijk een leesprobleem dat bij de leerling gedragsproblemen veroorzaakt. Het is relevant voor zowel de onderwijspraktijk als de opleidingen om uitsluitsel te krijgen over hoe deze problematiek in elkaar zit. In dit proefschrift wordt beoogd de vraag te beantwoorden of de gerichtheid op gedragsproblemen terecht is. Ook wil hiermee tegemoet worden gekomen aan de behoefte aan onderzoek waarmee de praktijk duidelijkere handvatten aangereikt krijgt om om te gaan met deze problemen en waar te beginnen met het bestrijden en voorkomen van de problemen. De volgende onderzoeksvragen worden beantwoord: 1) Gaan leesproblemen vooraf aan gedragsproblemen, is het andersom of is er sprake van wederzijdse volgtijdelijkheid? 2) Veroorzaken leesproblemen gedragsproblemen, is het andersom of veroorzaken zij elkaar? 3) In welke mate is lezen en gedrag te beïnvloeden door de leerkracht? Resultaten Het gedrag van leerlingen tijdens de leesles (aandacht, verstorend gedrag, emotionele stabiliteit) blijkt niet bij te dragen aan hun leesvaardigheid aan het eind van datzelfde schooljaar (groep 5); het is dus niet zo dat leerlingen die zich beter gedragen aan het begin van het jaar, beter lezen aan het eind van het jaar. Andersom is het wel zo dat leerlingen die aan het begin van het jaar beter lezen, zich aan het eind van het jaar beter gedragen (Brokamp, Houtveen & Van de Grift, 2018b; Brokamp, Houtveen & Van de Grift, submitted). Er wordt momenteel vervolgonderzoek uitgevoerd om te kijken of deze trend hetzelfde is over meerdere leerjaren. Wanneer gekeken wordt naar wat de leerkracht kan doen om zowel het lezen als het gedrag van de leerlingen tijdens de leesles te beïnvloeden, blijkt dat de leerkracht door het geven van een kwalitatief goede leesles ervoor kan zorgen dat de leerlingen beter gaan lezen, maar ook meer gefocust zijn, minder verstorend gedrag vertonen en (in minder mate) meer zelfvertrouwen hebben. Voor de praktijk heeft dit een belangrijke implicatie, namelijk het belang van goed leesonderwijs; het geven van een goede leesles zorgt niet alleen voor verbetering van de leesprestaties maar kan ook in positieve zin bijdragen aan het gedrag van de leerlingen (Brokamp, Houtveen & Van de Grift, 2016; 2018a). Ook bekijken we het instructiegedrag en algemeen pedagogisch handelen van de leerkrachten om de vraag te kunnen beantwoorden in welke mate de leerkrachten het lezen en gedrag van de leerlingen kunnen beïnvloeden.
Meaningful applications in education, healthcare and media. The first spearhead concerns the use of virtual humans (AI-driven, digital people) in various sectors of society such as education, healthcare and media. The shortages of labour affect all sectors and the use of AI and virtual humans can contribute to solutions. Think of a virtual 'buddy' for lonely elderly people, a virtual teacher for education and training of digital coaches and assistants. But also of serious games that measure or influence behaviour and digital twins (digital copies of objects, systems or plans) for better decision-making. The second pillar of the project focuses on the further growth of the region as an innovation district. To this end, collaborations between knowledge institutions, organisations and companies established in the Spoorzone are stimulated. The result is that (young) talent is committed to the region; also one of the objectives of the Regio Deal Midden-Brabant.Societal issueCombating a digital divide so that the (digital) society remains accessible and fair for everyone - even if you are not very technically minded - is also a spearhead. Benefit for societyBy developing the innovation district for society, we create a magnet function for:Socially involved experts (knowledge institutions), companies, social organizations, citizens and investors. Students/young talent with innovative power who are challenged to new solutions and entrepreneurship. Companies that want to bring new solutions to the market, that invest in R&D and want to establish themselves close to talent;o Attractive jobs in the companies mentioned so that young talent commits to the region and can “work for the best brands” there.In addition to structural reinforcement by the innovation district, the technology of virtual humans is being researched in the practice of health, care, welfare, education and media. The concrete projects in this proposal are already achieving initial results in this area; applications that meet social needs or that provide social solutions.
