From the article: Abstract Since decision management is becoming an integrated part of business process management, more and more decision management implementations are realized. Therefore, organizations search for guidance to design such solutions. Principles are often applied to guide the design of information systems in general. A particular area of interest when designing decision management solutions is compliance. In an earlier published study (Zoet & Smit, 2016) we took a general perspective on principles regarding the design of decision management solutions. In this paper, we re-address our earlier work, yet from a different perspective, the compliance perspective. Thus, we analyzed how the principles can be utilized in the design of compliant decision management solutions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to specify, classify, and validate compliance principles. To identify relevant compliance principles, we conducted a three round focus group and three round Delphi Study which led to the identification of eleven compliance principles. These eleven principles can be clustered into four categories: 1) surface structure principles, 2) deep structure principles, 3) organizational structure principles, and 4) physical structure principles. The identified compliance principles provide a framework to take into account when designing information systems, taking into account the risk management and compliance perspective.

Business rules play a critical role during decision making when executing business processes. Existing modelling techniques for business rules offer modellers guidelines on how to create models that are consistent, complete and syntactically correct. However, modelling guidelines that address manageability in terms of anomalies such as insertion, update and deletion are not widely available. This paper presents a normalisation procedure that provides guidelines for managing and organising business rules. The procedure is evaluated by means of an experiment based on existing case study material. Results show that the procedure is useful for minimising insertion and deletion anomalies.

During recent years the world has seen rapid changes such as globalization, the Internet, and the rise of new economies. To survive these changes organizations need to be in control of their processes, and be able to continuously improve the process performance. Therefore many organizations are increasingly adopting Business Process Management (BPM). However, it is not clear if the implementation of BPM(S) is really adding value to an organization. Consequently, in this paper, we try to answer the following research question: 'Does adoption of Business Process Management lead to a higher process performance?' Based on quantitative research we show that there is dependence between the performance of processes within an organization and the BPM maturity of that organization. As a result we conclude that improvement in process performance can be attained by increasing the BPM maturity of an organization.

From the article: Business rules management is a mean by which an organization realizes controllability of business activities to fulfill goals. Currently the focus of controllability is mainly on effectiveness, efficiency and output quality. Little attention is paid to risk, stakeholder concerns and high level goals. The purpose of this work is to present a viewpoint relating business rules management with concepts of risks, stakeholder, concerns and goals. The viewpoint is presented by means of a meta-model existing out of six concepts: stakeholder, concern, goal, business rule, requirements and implementation mechanism. In a case study the proposed view is validated in terms of completeness, usability and accuracy. Results illustrate the completeness, usability and a high degree of accuracy of our defined view. Future research is suggested on the development of a modeling language to improve the communicational value and ease of use of the meta-model.

The main question in this PhD thesis is: How can Business Rules Management be configured and valued in organizations? A BRM problem space framework is proposed, existing of service systems, as a solution to the BRM problems. In total 94 vendor documents and approximately 32 hours of semi-structured interviews were analyzed. This analysis revealed nine individual service systems, in casu elicitation, design, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitor, audit, and version. In the second part of this dissertation, BRM is positioned in relation to BPM (Business Process Management) by means of a literature study. An extension study was conducted: a qualitative study on a list of business rules formulated by a consulting organization based on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission risk framework. Een langdurige vete tussen hun families staat een openlijke liefde in de weg. Romeo heeft simpelweg de verkeerde achternaam. Vanaf het balkon roept Julia de beroemde woorden uit “What’s in a name?”. Want zou een roos, denkt Julia hardop, als we die een andere naam geven, niet even zoet ruiken? Zo zouden we ook graag naar informele zorg kijken. Niet blindstaren op het woord, maar kijken naar het fenomeen wat achter de naam schuilgaat: wat is informele zorg precies? Wat beweegt mensen, wat doen zij? In de afgelopen decennia is er veel kennis verzameld over verschillende vormen van informele zorg. Denk aan mantelzorg, vrijwilligerswerk, burenhulp en specifieke vormen van ervaringsdeskundigheid. De meerwaarde van deze kennis laat zich raden, maar heeft ook een keerzijde: de wilde verzameling definities van en ideeën over informele zorg heeft er ook voor gezorgd dat we soms door de bomen het bos niet meer zien. In dit artikel maken we daarom een rondreis door de rijke wereld van informele zorg.

With the increased use of business rules (solutions) the interest in modelling guidelines that address the manageability of business rules has increased as well. However, current research on modelling guidelines is mainly based on a theoretical view of modifications that can occur to a business rule set. Research on actual modifications that occur in practice is limited. The goal of this study is to identify modifications that can occur to a business rule set and underlying business rules. To accomplish this goal we conducted a grounded theory study on 229 rules set, as applied from March 2006 till June 2014, by the National Health Service. In total 3495 modifications have been analysed from which we defined eleven modification categories that can occur to a business rule set. The classification provides a framework for the analysis and design of business rules management architectures.
