Beschrijving

Understanding what drives deadwood decomposition over time is important to understanding forest carbon dynamics. Using a tailored experimental design in a temperate forest environment, it was found that initially wood characteristics explained the decomposition rate, while subsequently bark characteristics and fungal composition determined the decomposition rate. These findings inform forest management efforts to select tree species to promote carbon storage.
