Many affective experiences and learning processes including attachment patterns from early developmental phases manifest during psychotherapy. The first 15 min in art therapy can potentially reveal clients’ preferred ways of processing information or Expressive Therapies Continuum components, attachment patterns in the material handling process, and emotion regulation strategies during art making. This article discusses how, through clients’ choice of materials and manner of interaction with those materials, information about attachment patterns and preferred emotion regulation is available in art therapy. Paying close attention to the first image and material interaction provides crucial information that will guide the goals and course of art therapy. Two case vignettes demonstrate that within the first 15 min of art therapy information is readily gathered about attachment styles, Expressive Therapies Continuum components, emotion regulation, and the course of art therapy.
Arts and psychomotor therapies are often part of the multidisciplinary treatment for people diagnosed with Personality Disorders (PDs). Drama therapy is aimed at promoting emotion regulation and strengthening of interpersonal skills. The added value of drama therapy has not been sufficiently examined and available studies only provide indirect client reports. Hence, we focus on what people with PDs perceive as effects of drama therapy. This qualitative study followed the Grounded Theory Approach utilising indepth, semi-structured interviews in a natural drama therapy context. Interviews were held with 19 people diagnosed with PDs, who were purposefully sampled. They were recruited from five treatment centres, with five drama therapists involved. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a three-step approach: open, axial, and selective coding. Open coding resulted in 93 codes. In the coding process, four overarching themes came to the fore: allowing playfulness and its inherent benefits, connecting the inner and outer emotional world, understanding of maladaptive coping styles, and intrapersonal and interpersonal behavior change. The perceived effects as reported by people diagnosed with PDs provide information about what drama therapy means to them, in their daily lives and which aspects of the treatment were most valuable to them. This study contributes to the necessary underpinning of drama therapy.

The road to science for the arts therapies requires research on the full breadths of the spectrum, from systematic case studies to RCTs. It is important that arts therapists and arts therapeutic researchers reflect on the typical characteristics of each research paradigm, research type and research method and select what is appropriate with regard to the particular research question. Questions rather differ. Finding out whether a certain intervention has a particular effect with a large group of clients differs from wanting to know which change occurs at which moment by which interventions in the treatment of an individual client. Research in practice remains close to questions encountered by arts therapists in their daily practice. It concerns questions arts therapists have about their lived experience of acting due to the complexity and variability of practice. By carrying out research in practice that links up with those questions, evidence evolves; evidence that enables the professional to proceed and that makes explicit what often remains implicit and unsaid. What is explicit can be communicated, can be criticised and tested. The professional himself does the road to science of the profession. The investment in professionals’ research in practice is the motor of knowledge-productivity that bridges the theory-practice gap. Research in the arts therapies should lead to ‘knowledge’ in which the ‘art’, nor the ‘subject’ of therapist and client have been lost.
