Coastal dunes are challenging to manage due to their dynamic nature, vulnerable ecosystems, and recreational demand. A limited management approach was studied at Jockey's Ridge, the largest active dune on the US Atlantic coast. Visitor experience data, digital elevation models, and informal stories and photos were integrated in a case study approach. Data revealed the value of an integrated management approach that preserved the dune as a unique "living" geomorphological feature with interventions limited to the park borders. The accessibility of the dune to visitors facilitated intense, enjoyable interactions with nature. Elevation data show that the management approach has maintained the dune's unique naturally dynamic character, revealing the benefits of preserving processes rather than features.

BACKGROUND: Improvement of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important goal in preventive cardiology. HRQOL is also related to depressive symptoms, which represent a common co-morbidity and risk factor in patients with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Comprehensive nurse-coordinated prevention programmes (NCPP) in secondary care have been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk, however their effects on HRQOL and depressive symptoms have not been evaluated. We therefore investigated HRQOL and depressive symptoms in a secondary analysis in the RESPONSE trial, evaluating the effect of a NCPP on cardiovascular risk.METHODS: RESPONSE was a multicentre (n = 11) randomised controlled trial in ACS-patients in secondary and tertiary healthcare settings evaluating a NCPP. The intervention consisted of four outpatient nurse clinic visits in the first 6 months after the index event, focusing on healthy lifestyles, biometric risk factors and medication adherence, in addition to usual care. The control group received usual care only. The outcome was change in HRQOL as measured by the MacNew questionnaire and change in depressive symptoms as measured by Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire at 12-months follow-up relative to baseline.RESULTS: Of 754 patients randomised, 615 were analysed for HRQOL; 120 for depressive symptoms. At baseline, HRQOL was 5.17 (SD 1.09) and 5.20 (SD1.04) (scale range 1.0 to 7.0) in the intervention and control group, respectively. At 12 months follow-up, HRQOL increased by 0.57 (SD 0.89) in the intervention group as compared with 0.42 (SD 0.90) in the control group (p = 0.03). This increase was observed across all relevant subscales. The BDI decreased by 1.9 in the intervention group as compared with 0.03 in the control group (p = 0.03) (scale range 1.0 to 63).CONCLUSION: Participation in a NCPP is associated with a modest but statistically significant increase in HRQOL, and a decrease of depressive symptoms, both of which are highly relevant to patients. A reduction in depressive symptoms may in addition contribute to a reduction in the overall risk of recurrent events.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Dutch trials register: NTR1290 . Registered 24 April 2008.
Municipalities play an important role in tackling city logistics related matters, having many instruments at hand. However, it is not self-evident that all municipalities use these instruments to their full potential. A method to measure city logistics performance of municipalities can help in creating awareness and guidance, to ultimately lead to a more sustainable environment for inhabitants and businesses. Subsequently, this research is focused on a maturity model as a tool to assess the maturity level of a municipality for its performance related city logistics process management. Various criteria for measuring city logistics performance are studied and based on that the model is populated through three focus fields (Technical, Social and Corporate, and Policy), branching out into six areas of development: Information and communication technology, urban logistics planning, Stakeholder communication, Public Private Partnerships, Subsidisation and incentivisation, and Regulations. The CL3M model was tested for three municipalities, namely, municipality of Utrecht, Den Bosch and Groningen. Through these maturity assessments it became evident the model required specificity complementary to the existing assessment interview, and thus a SWOT analysis should be added as a conclusion during the maturity assessment.
Globally, coastal areas can be seen as the most popular tourist-recreational destinations. Consequently, these destinations generate major visitor flows. Furthermore, they are interpreted differently by every visitor, for example depending on lifestyles and age. These two problems, or maybe chances, are the central focus in this article. More specifically, this conceptual paper examines what the typical coastal experience consists of and in which ways the producers of the tourist-recreational coastal product can anticipate this. After explaining the principles of visitor management, as defined by Ennen, a theoretical framework is presented that tries to capture the total coastal experience. Then, two existing coastal areas are projected onto this framework. Finally, some conclusions are drawn.

Public lighting’s primary purpose is nighttime visibility for security and safety. How to meet so many requirements of so many stakeholders? The key to developing a good plan is to relate lighting to functions of public spaces, because street lighting is more than a technical requirement, a security need, or a design element. It can be thought of and utilized in terms of how the type, placement, and wattage affect how a street is perceived and used. With present-day used street lighting systems however, flexibility is expensive, as is maintenance and energy consumption. A new solution is to use LED lighting with a Direct Current power system. Advantages are a decrease in: energy conversions; material use; amount of switch- boxes; components; labour costs and environmental comfort. The overall implementation of LED and DC will result in better control and efficient maintenance due to integrated bidirectional communication. A challenge is the relatively high investment for these new solutions. Another challenge; DC is not a standard yet in rules and regulations. In the paper the transition to direct current public lighting system will be described with all the pros and cons. A new concept of public ownership, to overcome financial challenges will be discussed. Inaugurele rede uitgesproken bij de aanvaarding van het ambt van lector aan Hogeschool van Hall Larenstein, 16 juni 2023. Rivieren en beken zijn een gemeenschappelijk, gedeeld goed (in het Engels: common property). De grote rivieren stonden via transport van sediment aan de oorsprong van ons Deltaland en zijn een manifestatie van een belangrijk gedeeld proces: de waterkringloop (Fig. 1). De biogeochemische processen binnen diehydrologische kringloop zorgen voor ons belangrijkste gemeenschappelijk goed: zoet water. Oppervlaktewater – zoals zeewater – verdampt, en wordt door de wind in de vorm van wolken landinwaarts gebracht. Daar valthet als neerslag en zakt in de aarde, wordt gebruikt door planten, verdampt of stroomt vanuit een groter of kleiner stroomgebied via beken en rivieren terug naar zee. Het is daarbij van levensbelang voor ons allen: mensen, dieren en planten. Wij gebruiken rivieren en beken voor ons drinkwater, omvoedsel te verzamelen, als transportader, als riool, als natuurlijke hulpbron inagrarische en industriële productie, voor energieproductie (zowel waterkracht als koeling), als aantrekkelijke woonplaats en voor recreatie. Maar ook wilde dieren en planten gebruiken het als drinkwater,transportader, om voedsel te verzamelen en als leefomgeving. Daarnaast genieten we van de schoonheid van rivieren en beken en biedt het onsinspiratie. Een goed beheer van (het stroomgebied van) beken en rivieren is daarom een gemeenschappelijk belang, waarbij het cruciaal is om de draagkracht van onze watersystemen te kennen en ze niet te overschrijden. Soms moeten we daarvoor terug of verder kijken: naar hoe het vroegerwas, hoe onze buren het doen, of hoe het zou kunnen. In deze rede wordt geschetst hoe er met natuur-gebaseerd rivierbeheer op zoek wordt gegaan naar grote gemene delers: maatregelen waar velen baat bij hebben en waar de belangen ook samenvallen, terwijl we binnen de systeemgrenzen blijven en de draagkracht niet wordt overschreden.
