Deze vraag stelden lectoren Petra Biemans (Hogeschool Inholland) en Ellen Sjoer (De Haagse Hogeschool) zichzelf. Het antwoord op deze vraag is te vinden in het boek ‘Werk verandert. 21st century skills in de praktijk'. Spelen onderwijsinstellingen voldoende en tijdig in op de vaardigheden die toekomstbestendige werknemers en ondernemers nodig hebben? Of krijgen studenten zodra ze de arbeidsmarkt betreden een cultuurshock omdat het onderwijs achterblijft? Hoe en welke van de 21st century skills effectief in het onderwijs geïmplementeerd kunnen worden vereist volgens de lectoren nog vervolgonderzoek.

A social media architect is an appealing new profession that entails crossovers between communication and IT & Design. There are no study programmes for this job. Important questions are how to interest secondary school pupils for such a new job, and how to prepare them for these jobs or jobs that do not even exist today? Deze Powerpoint presentatie werd door lector Cock Heemskerk gebruikt voor een lezing over zorgrobots in het Slimste Huis in Alkmaar. Na een korte uitleg over het werkveld van het lectoraat en de wetenschappelijke definitie van een robot wordt nader ingegaan op de inzetbaarheid van zorgrobots anno 2017. De testresultaten van de zorgrobots Alice en ROSE worden duidelijk uiteengezet. Er wordt ingezoomd op de 21ste eeuw vaardigheden van studenten verpleegkunde en die onderzoekers. Tot slot wordt de opbouw en de doelstelling van een klinische les (nagespeelde praktijksituatie) gepresenteerd.

This study contributes to the employability skills debate by investigating how students’ self-perceived 21st century skills relate to the self-perceived fit between their higher education curriculum and their future labor market for a sustainable entry to this labor market. Survey data from 4670 fourth-year students over a period of four years were analyzed. Furthermore, out of this group, 83 students were monitored longitudinally over their full educational student careers. Results showed a positive relationship between students’ self-perceived 21st century skills and their self-perceived “education-future labor market fit”. Among more recent cohorts, a significant improvement in their self-perceived 21st century skills was found. Overall, this study indicated that in order to deliver “employable” graduates, students need to be thoroughly trained in 21st century skills, and their development should be retained and expanded. This is one of the few studies that uses a vast amount of both cross-sectional and longitudinal data on skills and labor market perspectives among new graduates.

With the increasing presence of new media, life in classrooms all around the world has drastically changed. The critical and conscious use of media messages provided by technological devices has developed into a crucial 21st century skill. Lin et al. (2013) have laid ground for a useful and proven theoretical framework regarding media literacy. Based on the concept of presuming and consuming media in a critical or functional way, the authors suggest ten fine-grained indicators to define new media literacy (Lin et al., 2013). Building onto this framework, recent academic research discusses the concept of new media, media literacy and the importance of implementing adequate courses in curricula (Koc & Barut, 2016; Zhu et al., 2020). However, the development of an apt way to test media literacy is still a great challenge for secondary education. After conducting an extensive search in scientific literature, it turns out that there is no usable, validated tool for a precise measurement of media literacy as a 21st century skill in secondary education. Researchers have been able to construct definitions, frameworks and questionnaires (Zhu et al., 2020), but a validated instrument to test and check the precise development of a specific skillset is still lacking. The aim of this developmental research is therefore to draw up an instrument to measure the mastery of various, specific components of media literacy in secondary education. An adequate tool to be able to formatively test these skills would be a rubric with a five-point scoring scale: it can help teachers to better understand their students' skills and progress in media literacy, and in addition, it gives students insight into specific learning outcomes that have to be achieved. The development of this rubric is conducted through an iterative process in which results are regularly tested through experiments in educational practice. In this process, the targeted audience consists of not only teachers but students, advisors and researchers as well. With this instrument, the use of specific workshops and courses and can be tested on efficiency. By letting teachers (and students) use this rubric as a guideline, it is possible to assess whether students structurally develop better mastery of media literacy after following specific workshops or courses. Through use of this crucial tool, media literacy can therefore be more fully integrated within the curricula of secondary education.

De impact van technologie wordt in allerlei beroepen steeds groter. Hoe stoomt HR medewerkers klaar voor een digitale toekomst? En vergeet HR zichzelf niet? HR loopt achter en datagestuurd werken op de HR-afdeling is nog ver weg. Technologie heeft veel impact op organisaties. en op het werk zelf. Ook voor HR betekent digitalisering verandering van het werk. Er worden in het verlengde hiervan ook andere competenties en kwalificaties van HR zelf verwacht. De zogeheten 21st century skills spelen een belangrijke rol: analytisch vermogen, probleemoplossend vermogen, samenwerking, creativiteit én in het bijzonder het vermogen om met grote hoeveelheden informatie om te gaan.
