The central thesis of this book is that access to information represents a vital aspect of contemporary society, encompassing participation, accountability, governance, transparency, the production of products, and the delivery of services. This view is widely shared, with commentators and scholars agreeing that access to information is a key factor in maintaining societal and economic stability. However, having access to information does not guarantee its accessibility. Assuming that information is (cognitively) interpretable is incorrect, as many practical examples illustrate. In the first chapter, this book offers insights into the challenge of access to information in a digitalized world. The concepts of access and accessibility are addressed, elucidating their meanings and delineating the ways in which they are influenced by the exponential growth of information. It examines how information technology introduces a novel access paradox. The second chapter examines the challenges to access to and accessibility of information in a digitalized, hybrid world where code may be law, where there is an inescapable loss of privacy, where doing business opens and restricts access, where literacy is a necessity to survive ‘digital divides,’ and where environmental concerns may have an adverse effect on high expectations. The third chapter presents a review of theoretical approaches to access and accessibility from seven different research perspectives: information access disparity, information seeking, information retrieval, information quality, information security, information management, and archives management. Six approaches to information access and accessibility are identified: [1] social, economic, and political participation; [2] ‘smart’ and evolving technology; [3] power and control; [4] sense-making; [5] knowledge representations, and [6] information survival. The fourth chapter addresses the bottlenecks and requirements for information access and accessibility, culminating in a checklist for organizations to assess these requirements within their own business processes. In the fifth chapter, some perspectives on artificial intelligence and the future of information access are presented. The sixth chapter represents an attempt to draw conclusions and to bring this book to a close.

Green spaces play an important role in urban areas. We study the accessibility of green urban areas by combining open data sets about green with population size data. We develop a mathematical model to define the population density of a green area and calculate the available green space depending on the location. To this end, we do not only consider walking distance to and size of the green area, but also take into account the local population size. Our model quantifies how the available green space depends on the location in the city, such that heavily populated areas have a small amount of green available, even when closely located to a green area.

Purpose: This is a position paper describing the elements of an international framework for assistive techhnology provision that could guide the development of policies, systems and service delivery procedures across the world. It describes general requirements, quality criteria and possible approaches that may help to enhance the accessibility of affordable and high quality assistive technology solutions. Materials and methods: The paper is based on the experience of the authors, an analysis of the existing literature and the inputs from many colleagues in the field of assistive technology provision. It includes the results of discussions of an earlier version of the paper during an international conference on the topic in August 2017. Results and conclusion: The paper ends with the recommendation to develop an international standard for assistive technology provision. Such a standard can have a major impact on the accessibility of AT for people with disabilities. The paper outlines some the key elements to be included in a standard.

This paper relies on knowledge gained from ITRACT (Improving Transport and Accessibility through new Communication Technologies), an Interreg IVB project in the North Sea Region. We will show how digital innovation to promote mobility and accessibility in rural areas is limited by poor data infrastructure and a lack of digital engagement. It is argued that these limitations perpetuate the remoteness of these areas.

Background: Despite the wide range of available treatment modalities a delay between the first outbreak of acne vulgaris and an effective treatment outcome is experienced by many patients. Considering the growing incentives to improve patient satisfaction and quality of care while reducing healthcare costs, insights into the structure, quality and accessibility of acne healthcare services beyond guidelines are therefore needed. Objective: To provide insights into the structure, quality and accessibility of acne healthcare services. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted according to the principles of ‘situational analysis’. The Dutch acne healthcare system was taken as an illustrative example. Twenty-four semi-structured interviews were conducted among representatives of the 4 main Dutch professions providing acne care. All interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and analyzed. Results: Multiple facilitators and barriers emerged from the interviews. Identified facilitators were care providers delivering personalized patient care and having a positive attitude toward formalized multidisciplinary care delivery. A lack of streamlined referral pathways and standardization in acne severityassessment, financial aspects and unfamiliarity with the content and added value of other acne care professionals were identified as barriers. Further research is recommended to investigate how demedicalisation, the gatekeepers role, and the impact of location and work setting influence the quality of and accessibility to care. Conclusions: Identified facilitators and barriers and an overall positive attitude of care providers toward multidisciplinary care provision provides opportunities for the utilization of future guidelines involving streamlined referral pathways and good working arrangements between all acne care providing professions.

This thesis focuses on improving communication between people with aphasia and healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in hospitals or rehabilitation centers. After acquiring brain injury, people with aphasia generally go to healthcare facilities to receive acute- and multidisciplinary rehabilitation care. Unfortunately, communication access in healthcare facilities has not been fully available to people with aphasia. The general aim of this thesis was to improve the accessibility of communication in Dutch and Flemish healthcare centers for people with aphasia by developing and evaluating a Communication Partner Training (CPT) intervention for HCPs, named CommuniCare.

Accessibility and connectivity are essential for livability and economic growth throughout the world. Improving the accessibility of physical transport is important for achieving the social and economic inclusion of rural areas. In reality, rural areas lag behind with respect to physical accessibility and connectivity. The ambition of the ITRACT project (Improving Transport and Accessibility through new Communication Technologies) was to use ICT to create smart mobility services to improve accessibility and connectivity in rural areas.

This paper reviews the existing literature concerned with air passengers with specific access requirements, often referred as passengers with disabilities (PwDs) or passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs). While accessibility in air transport is an emerging field of research, the literature lacks a more in-depth understanding of the barriers that air passengers face, which can guide future research and help practitioners in improving the services to this passenger segment. To this end, we conducted a systematic review of 50 peer-reviewed articles to explore how these challenges have been addressed in existing literature. The analysis expanded upon the established primary barrier categories (architectural, transport, communication and information, attitudinal, and technological). Within these categories, novel sub-groups of barriers were identified and proposed. The analysis further revealed the most suggested solutions to overcoming those barriers: i) legal obligations and standard operational procedures; ii) improving airport facilities and services; iii) digitalization of operations and services; iv) recommendations for improving cabin safety and accessibility; and v) training for airport and airline staff. This study emphasizes the importance of gaining a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by PwDs and calls for more collaborative efforts from various stakeholders to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of air travel.

from the article: "Abstract: The oral mucosa is the first immune tissue that encounters allergens upon ingestion of food. We hypothesized that the bio-accessibility of allergens at this stage may be a key determinant for sensitization. Light roasted peanut flour was suspended at various pH in buffers mimicking saliva. Protein concentrations and allergens profiles were determined in the supernatants. Peanut protein solubility was poor in the pH range between 3 and 6, while at a low pH (1.5) and at moderately high pHs (>8), it increased. In the pH range of saliva, between 6.5 and 8.5, the allergens Ara h2 and Ara h6 were readily released, whereas Ara h1 and Ara h3 were poorly released. Increasing the pH from 6.5 to 8.5 slightly increased the release of Ara h1 and Ara h3, but the recovery remained low (approximately 20%) compared to that of Ara h2 and Ara h6 (approximately 100% and 65%, respectively). This remarkable difference in the extraction kinetics suggests that Ara h2 and Ara h6 are the first allergens an individual is exposed to upon ingestion of peanut-containing food. We conclude that the peanut allergens Ara h2 and Ara h6 are quickly bio-accessible in the mouth, potentially explaining their extraordinary allergenicity."
