The pace of introduction of new technology and thus continuous change in skill needs at workplaces, especially for the engineers, has increased. While digitization induced changes in manufacturing, construction and supply chain sectors may not be felt the same in every sector, this will be hard to escape. Both young and experienced engineers will experience the change, and the need to continuously assess and close the skills gap will arise. How will we, the continuing engineering educators and administrators will respond to it? I was somewhat surprized with the fog in Groningen upon my arrival. This is notthe fog that covers the beautiful landscapes of the northern Netherlands in theevening and in the early morning. No… It is the fog that obscures the real aspectsof the earthquake problem in the region and is crystallised in the phrase “Groningen earthquakes are different”, which I have encountered numerous times whenever I raised a question of the type “But why..?”. A sentence taken out of the quiver as the absolute technical argument which mysteriously overshadows the whole earthquake discussion.Q: Why do we not use Eurocode 8 for seismic design, instead of NPR?A: Because the Groningen earthquakes are different!Q: Why do we not monitor our structures like the rest of the world does?A: Because the Groningen earthquakes are different!Q: Why does NPR, the Dutch seismic guidelines, dictate some unusual rules?A: Because the Groningen earthquakes are different!Q: Why are the hazard levels incredibly high, even higher than most Europeanseismic countries?A: Because the Groningen earthquakes are different!and so it keeps going…This statement is very common, but on the contrary, I have not seen a single piece of research that proves it or even discusses it. In essence, it would be a difficult task to prove that the Groningen earthquakes are different. In any case it barricades a healthy technical discussion because most of the times the arguments converge to one single statement, independent of the content of the discussion. This is the reason why our first research activities were dedicated to study if the Groningen earthquakes are really different. Up until today, we have not found any major differences between the Groningen induced seismicity events and natural seismic events with similar conditions (magnitude, distance, depth, soil etc…) that would affect the structures significantly in a different way.Since my arrival in Groningen, I have been amazed to learn how differently theearthquake issue has been treated in this part of the world. There will always bedifferences among different cultures, that is understandable. I have been exposed to several earthquake engineers from different countries, and I can expect a natural variation in opinions, approaches and definitions. But the feeling in Groningen is different. I soon realized that, due to several factors, a parallel path, which I call “an augmented reality” below, was created. What I mean by an augmented reality is a view of the real-world, whose elements are augmented and modified. In our example, I refer to the engineering concepts used for solving the earthquake problem, but in an augmented and modified way. This augmented reality is covered in the fog I described above. The whole thing is made so complicated that one is often tempted to rewind the tape to the hot August days of 2012, right after the Huizinge Earthquake, and replay it to today but this time by making the correct steps. We would wake up to a different Groningen today. I was instructed to keep the text as well as the inauguration speech as simple aspossible, and preferably, as non-technical as it goes. I thus listed the most common myths and fallacies I have faced since I arrived in Groningen. In this book and in the presentation, I may seem to take a critical view. This is because I try to tell a different part of the story, without repeating things that have already been said several times before. I think this is the very reason why my research group would like to make an effort in helping to solve the problem by providing different views. This book is one of such efforts.The quote given at the beginning of this book reads “How quick are we to learn: that is, to imitate what others have done or thought before. And how slow are we to understand: that is, to see the deeper connections.” is from Frits Zernike, the Nobel winning professor from the University of Groningen, who gave his name to the campus I work at. Applying this quotation to our problem would mean that we should learn from the seismic countries by imitating them, by using the existing state-of-the-art earthquake engineering knowledge, and by forgetting the dogma of “the Groningen earthquakes are different” at least for a while. We should then pass to the next level of looking deeperinto the Groningen earthquake problem for a better understanding, and alsodiscover the potential differences.

Europe faces significant challenges in maintaining its aging infrastructure due to extreme weather events, fluctuating groundwater levels, and rising sustainability demands. Ensuring the safety and longevity of infrastructure is a critical priority, especially for public organizations responsible for asset management. Digital technologies have the potential to facilitate the scaling and automation of infrastructure maintenance while enabling the development of a data-driven standardized inspection methodology. This extended abstract is the first phase of a study that examines current structural inspection methods and lifecycle monitoring activities of the Dutch public and private entities. The preliminary findings presented here indicate a preference for data-driven approaches, though challenges in data collection, processing, personnel resources and analysis remain. The future work will experiment integrating advanced tools, such as artificial intelligence supported visual inspection, on the existing inspection datasets of these authorities for quantifying their readiness levels to the fully automated digital inspections.

This paper aims to present a comprehensive investigation to obtain the structural calculations needed to design a rigid panel of aluminum alloy for the wing box beam of an ATR 72–500 aircraft. For this design process, several types of materials, including composites like CFRP, are considered so it is possible to compare the actual existing part made of aluminum to them, thus checking the advantages these new materials offer. The research presents an introduction to structural design and provides a study of the relevant literature. The aircraft's principal characteristics and performance abilities were collected so that structural loads can be computed. Research used several methods, a design using conventional methods, applying the theory of elasticity is performed using the Theory of Farrar, allowing us to obtain an analytical solution to the problem, followed by checking the obtained results using Ansys FEM software combined with the parts being designed with CATIA. Furthermore, this same panel is calculated using composite materials instead of conventional aluminum, allowing us to compare both solutions. This research shed light on the intricate process of aircraft structural design, materials selection, and calculation methodologies, highlighting the ongoing pursuit of new and advanced materials. This paper makes clear that using composite materials presents several advantages over traditional ones, allowing for lighter, safer, more fuel-efficient, and more sustainable aircraft. The use of composite materials in the construction of airplane structures is driven by many factors. The results show that the chosen composite materials reduce weight, are durable, have low maintenance requirements, reduce noise, enhance fuel economy, and are resistant to corrosion.

The collection of articles within this topic addresses the challenges of achieving a profound understanding of composites, which is essential for optimizing design and overall functionality. This includes the application of complicated material modeling together with cutting-edge simulation tools that integrate multiscale methods and multiphysics, the creation of novel characterization techniques, and the integration of nanotechnology and additive manufacturing. This topic offers a detailed overview of the current state and future directions of composite research, covering experimental studies, theoretical evaluations, and numerical simulations. This subject provides a platform for interdisciplinary cooperation and creativity in everything from the processing and testing of innovative composite structures to the inspection and repair procedures. In order to support the development of more effective, durable, and sustainable materials for the mechanical and aerospace engineering industries, we seek to promote a greater understanding of composites.

Large structural changes are occurring in our society at this very moment. This has some large consequences for project development. According to Rudy Stroink, project development is on the brink of a system. The new style developer has to adapt to a new earning model. The golden ages are over. Private and collective commissioning are the beginning of a period in which the user will want to direct its own environment. The developer has to adapt if he wants to survive. Durability, long term profit, flexible office concepts and private and collective commissioning for houses will have to help the real-estate sector. This article will show the developments that caused this situation.

Masonry structures represent the highest proportion of building stock worldwide. Currently, the structural condition of such structures is predominantly manually inspected which is a laborious, costly and subjective process. With developments in computer vision, there is an opportunity to use digital images to automate the visual inspection process. The aim of this study is to examine deep learning techniques for crack detection on images from masonry walls. A dataset with photos from masonry structures is produced containing complex backgrounds and various crack types and sizes. Different deep learning networks are considered and by leveraging the effect of transfer learning crack detection on masonry surfaces is performed on patch level with 95.3% accuracy and on pixel level with 79.6% F1 score. This is the first implementation of deep learning for pixel-level crack segmentation on masonry surfaces. Afstromend hemelwater kan verontreinigingen bevatten zoals zware metalen van daken, PAK’s van uitlaatgassen, nutriënten uit dierenuitwerpselen en bladval. Inzicht in de samenstelling van afstromend hemelwater is gewenst om het effect van deze verontreinigingen op ons milieu te bepalen en/of inzicht te krijgen in de kosteneffectiviteit van eventuele maatregelen.In dit onderzoek is een vergelijking gemaakt tussen (inter)nationale praktijkmetingen naar de aard en samenstelling van regenwater. Om de effectiviteit van regenwaterbezinkvoorzieningen te beoordelen, isnaast de chemische samenstelling ook gekeken naar de korrelgrootteverdeling, bindingseigenschappen en valsnelheden. De voor een goede waterkwaliteit meest bepalende stoffen in Nederland zijn koper, zink en nutriënten. De concentratie van deze stoffen is relatief laag in vergelijking met internationaal onderzoek. Ook zijn deze stoffen hoofdzakelijk gebonden aan de moeilijk bezinkbare fracties. Op basis van dit vergelijkend onderzoek wordt een theoretisch aangenomen bezinkrendement van meer dan 50% nauwelijks haalbaar geacht. In combinatie met de lage valsnelheid is een rendement van orde grootte 25% meer waarschijnlijk. Bovendien is sprake van een sterk wisselende samenstelling van het regenwater in tijd en ruimte. Het rendement van een regenwaterbezinkvoorziening zal hierdoor sterk kunnen variëren in ruimte en tijd. Bij een hoge ambitie voor waterkwaliteit zal in veel gevallen een aanvullende filtratie- en of adsorptiestap wenselijk zijn om te voldoen aan de kaderrichtlijn water en of de MTR (maximaal toelaatbaar risico) voor oppervlaktewater.
