When conducting research in and for the creative industries, there are a wealth of different possible research approaches that can be taken - reflecting the diverse nature of the disciplines (design, arts and crafts, advertising, architecture, fashion, film, music, TV, radio performing arts, publishing and interactive software) and academic contexts (art schools, business schools and universities) involved. The result is that there are variations in the emphasis and approach taken to how students are taught to link theory with practice, and how they view and engage with the concept ʻresearchʼ. The need for understanding and awareness of a range of approaches is critical for anyone learning about and working within design, business and the creative industries today.

An EU-Mexican panel discussing the needs of creative industries mid- and post-pandemic, and how the cultural sector is fundamental for the health and wellbeing of society. Discussions touched on employment, policy, and education, along with sector-specific opportunities and cross-sectoral challenges. The name 'creative industries' was challenged for its divergent uses: many cultural sector workers believe it encompasses them, but policy often regards 'creative industries' as a branch of industrial design. There was significant criticism of social organisation that orients purely towards 'productivity' and the generation of revenue, while ignoring happiness as a goal.

Op 27 januari 2006 is dr. Michiel Scheffer geïnstalleerd als lector Fashion Materials Design bij Saxion in Enschede. Het lectoraat en de bijbehorende kenniskring is gericht op het versterken van de wisselwerking tussen creativiteit, technologie en economie op het gebied van mode en textiel. Deze wisselwerking moet sterker tot uiting komen in het onderwijs en dient ook in samenwerking met het bedrijfsleven tot uiting te komen in een onderzoeksprogramma. Het lectoraat is ondergebracht bij de opleiding Fashion en Textiel Management binnen de Academie voor Kunst en Toegepaste Techniek in Enschede. Dr. Michiel Scheffer is economisch geograaf en is al vijftien jaar actief in de Europese kleding en textielbranche als onderzoeker, consultant en branchemanager. Dit boek bevat de tekst van de lectorale rede van Michiel Scheffer.

This study focuses on SME networks of design and high-tech companies in Southeast Netherland. By highlighting the personal networks of members across design and high-tech industries, the study attempts to identify the main brokers in this dynamic environment. In addition, we investigate whether specific characteristics are associated with these brokers. The main contribution of the paper lies in the fact that, in contrast to most other work, it is quantitative and that it focuses on brokers identified in an actual network (based on both suppliers and users of the knowledge infrastructure). Studying the phenomenon of brokerage provides us with clear insights into the concept of brokerage regarding SME networks in different fields. In particular we highlight how third parties contribute to the transfer and development of knowledge. Empirical results show, among others that the most influential brokers are found in the nonprofit and science sector and have a long track record in their branch.

26 BUas lecturers of all 5 academies have contributed to a textbook titled ‘Ethical Dilemmas in the Creative, Cultural and Service Industries’. The book was edited by Johan Bouwer, Professor of Ethics in Business and Profession. The idea for this book was born a few years ago when our university started a project leading to the inclusion of (facets of business) ethics in all of our educational programmes, thereby acknowledging the industry’s need to attract professionals who are also able to address ethical dilemmas in their work. 21 Cases have been included in the book, covering a wide range of ethical dilemmas, which transcend national borders. Major ethical issues such as Corporate Social Responsibility, ethical leadership, human rights, fraud, employee rights and duties, new technology and (social) entrepreneurship are addressed. ‘Ethical Dilemmas in the Creative, Cultural and Service Industries’ is designed to enhance professional ethical awareness and supports student’s development of skills for ethical decision-making in professional practice.

Creativity has become a strategy in the making of places, with cities and regions seeking to increase their attractiveness to the creative class, support the creative industries or to become ‘creative cities’. We examine how creativity has been utilised in placemaking in tourism desti-nations through different design strategies. A shift in theoretical focus from creative individuals towards creative districts or places is noted, in line with the developing field of creative place-making. Case studies of creative development indicate strategies need to be sensitive to local context, and follow some basic design principles. Creative placemaking includes consideration of resources, meaning and creativity, driven by clear vision, enabling participation, leaving space for creative expression and developing a coherent narrative
