From PLoS website: In general, dietary antigens are tolerated by the gut associated immune system. Impairment of this so-called oral tolerance is a serious health risk. We have previously shown that activation of the ligand-dependent transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) by the environmental pollutant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) affects both oral tolerance and food allergy. In this study, we determine whether a common plant-derived, dietary AhR-ligand modulates oral tolerance as well. We therefore fed mice with indole-3-carbinole (I3C), an AhR ligand that is abundant in cruciferous plants. We show that several I3C metabolites were detectable in the serum after feeding, including the high-affinity ligand 3,3´-diindolylmethane (DIM). I3C feeding robustly induced the AhR-target gene CYP4501A1 in the intestine; I3C feeding also induced the aldh1 gene, whose product catalyzes the formation of retinoic acid (RA), an inducer of regulatory T cells. We then measured parameters indicating oral tolerance and severity of peanut-induced food allergy. In contrast to the tolerance-breaking effect of TCDD, feeding mice with chow containing 2 g/kg I3C lowered the serum anti-ovalbumin IgG1 response in an experimental oral tolerance protocol. Moreover, I3C feeding attenuated symptoms of peanut allergy. In conclusion, the dietary compound I3C can positively influence a vital immune function of the gut.

Source Segregation (SS) is a novel strategy in dairy housing that can reduce emissions and separate organic matter and nutrients more efficiently than traditional slurry solid-liquid separation. The anaerobic digestion (AD) methane yield of the SS fractions, however, is unknown. We aimed at unveiling the biomethane yield of these fractions by conducting AD experiments under different configurations: batch, continuous feeding, and fed-batch. In the batch test, the solid (SF) and liquid fraction (LF) from the SS system, a slurry collected from the pit (CS), and a self-made slurry (MF) were used as substrates. The results showed that the specific CH4 yields of the SF and MF were in same range and both higher than the CS. We concluded that SS can increase the CH4 yield of dairy excreta mainly by reducing losses in the animal house. The SF and MF were then compared in a continuously-fed thermophilic test, where SF had a higher specific (174 compared to 105 NL kg-1 VS) and volumetric (12.2 compared to 9.9 NL CH4 kg-1 excreta) yields. We concluded that the SF can effectively substitute slurry in AD without compromising the yield, possibly increasing economic viability by reducing transport costs and reactor size. Further, SF produced 356 NL CH4 kg-1 VS and a digestate with 1.8% lower dry matter in the fed-batch as compared to continuous feeding. Continuously stirred fed-batch can thus increase the CH4 yield of the SF and reduce the DM of its digestate potentially contributing to lower emissions in storage and field application.

In practice, faults in building installations are seldom noticed because automated systems to diagnose such faults are not common use, despite many proposed methods: they are cumbersome to apply and not matching the way of thinking of HVAC engineers. Additionally, fault diagnosis and energy performance diagnosis are seldom combined, while energy wastage is mostly a consequence of component, sensors or control faults. In this paper new advances on the 4S3F diagnose framework for automated diagnostic of energy waste in HVAC systems are presented. The architecture of HVAC systems can be derived from a process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) usually set up by HVAC designers. The paper demonstrates how all possible faults and symptoms can be extracted on a very structured way from the P&ID, and classified in 4 types of symptoms (deviations from balance equations, operational states, energy performances or additional information) and 3 types of faults (component, control and model faults). Symptoms and faults are related to each other through Diagnostic Bayesian Networks (DBNs) which work as an expert system. During operation of the HVAC system the data from the BMS is converted to symptoms, which are fed to the DBN. The DBN analyses the symptoms and determines the probability of faults. Generic indicators are proposed for the 4 types of symptoms. Standard DBN models for common components, controls and models are developed and it is demonstrated how to combine them in order to represent the complete HVAC system. Both the symptom and the fault identification parts are tested on historical BMS data of an ATES system including heat pump, boiler, solar panels, and hydronic systems. The energy savings resulting from fault corrections are estimated and amount 25%. Finally, the 4S3F method is extended to hard and soft sensor faults. Sensors are the core of any FDD system and any control system. Automated diagnostic of sensor faults is therefore essential. By considering hard sensors as components and soft sensors as models, they can be integrated into the 4S3F method.
