In wheelchair rugby (WR) athletes with tetraplegia, wheelchair performance may be impaired due to (partial) loss of innervation of upper extremity and trunk muscles, and low blood pressure (BP). The objective was to assess the effects of electrical stimulation (ES)-induced co-contraction of trunk muscles on trunk stability, arm force/power, BP, and WR performance.
Particle image velocimetry has been widely used in various sectors from the automotive to aviation, research, and development, energy, medical, turbines, reactors, electronics, education, refrigeration for flow characterization and investigation. In this study, articles examined in open literature containing the particle image velocimetry techniques are reviewed in terms of components, lasers, cameras, lenses, tracers, computers, synchronizers, and seeders. The results of the evaluation are categorized and explained within the tables and figures. It is anticipated that this paper will be a starting point for researchers willing to study in this area and industrial companies willing to include PIV experimenting in their portfolios. In addition, the study shows in detail the advantages and disadvantages of past and current technologies, which technologies in existing PIV laboratories can be renewed, and which components are used in the PIV laboratories to be installed.
Thermal disinfection is probably the oldest water treatment method ever used. Similarly to other disinfection processes, it targets the inactivation of pathogenic (micro)organisms present in water, wastewater and other media. In this work, a pilot-scale continuous-flow thermal disinfection system was investigated using highly contaminated hospital wastewater as influent without any pre-treatment step for turbidity removal. The results proved that the tested system can be used with influent turbidity as high as 100 NTU and still provide up to log 8 microbial inactivation. Further results have shown energy consumption comparable to other commercially available thermal disinfection systems and relatively low influence on the investigated physical–chemical parameters.

This project is part of an interdisciplinary and international collaboration bringing together experts in nanomaterials, sensor technology, and engineering from the University of Technology of Troyes (UTT, France), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands) and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (HUAS, The Netherlands). It presents an innovative, integrated approach including design, fabrication, characterization, and integration of flexible sensors dedicated to wind turbine blade monitoring, aiming to advance smart monitoring and renewable energy research. The sensor will be developed using functional polymer films decorated with conductive nanoparticles. A novel manufacturing approach will be applied, combining additive manufacturing techniques with the colloidal deposition of silver or gold nanoparticles.
Many cities and regions that are faced with growing tourism are looking for tools that can help them manage visitors and visitor flows and the consequent impacts on liveability. In this process, it is of crucial importance to have an as accurate and real-time (or predictive) as possible insight into visitor volumes, visitor flows and visitor impacts, as well as an insight into perceptions and sentiments among both visitors and residents. In the tools already available for this purpose, very limited use of (big) data is made. Although these sources may potentially offer many useful insights, accessing them or using them effectively turns out to be difficult due to a lack of understanding of the (im)possibilities of data, the practical requirements and the costs. In this project we want to obtain an insight into the measurement methods that are available in order to develop tourism policy in Etten-Leur on the basis of the insights to be gained from the data. With this approach, the research partners aim to develop a dashboard that can also be used in other situations, nationally and internationally.Partners: VisitBrabant, Van Gogh Sites Foundation, Van Gogh Kerk Etten-Leur, Gemeente Etten-Leur.
