This article provides a nano (hyperlocal) view of climate change mitigation by viewing regenerative organizing through the eyes (as well as bodies and senses, etc.) of the households engaged in community-based energy projects. By showing what humans make up for in the largely absent relationship between nature and technology in these projects, we envision an incremental extension of the literature on community-based energy. Quality of life serves a reference against which you can measure the various domains of your own life or that of other individuals, and that can change over time. This definition of the World Health Organization encompasses many elements of daily living, including features of the individual and the environment around us, which can either be the social environment, the built environment, or other environmental aspects. This is one of the rationales for the special issue on “Quality of Life: The Interplay between Human Behaviour, Technology and the Environment”. This special issue is a joint project by the Centre of Expertise Health Innovation of the Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. The main focus of this Special Issue is how optimising the interplay between people, the environment, and technology can enhance people’s quality of life. The focus of the contributions in this special issue is on the person or end‐user and his or her environment, both the physical, social, and digital environment, and on the interaction between (1) people, (2) health, care, and systems, and (3) technology. Recent advances in technology offer a wide range of solutions that support a healthy lifestyle, good quality of life, and effective and efficient healthcare processes, for a large number of end‐users, both patients/clients from minus 9 months until 100+ years of age, as well as practitioners/physicians. The design of new services and products is at the roots of serving the quality of life of people. Technology in general, and assistive technology in particular, is considered to be a promising opportunity to address the challenges of an aging population. Nevertheless, in health care, technology is not as widely used as could be expected. In this chapter, an overview is given of theories and models that help to understand this phenomenon. First, the design of (assistive) technologies will be addressed and the importance of human-centered design in the development of new assistive devices will be discussed. Also theories and models are addressed about technology acceptance in general. Specific attention will be given to technology acceptance in healthcare professionals, and the implementation of technology within healthcare organizations. The chapter will be based on the state of the art of scientific literature and will be illustrated with examples from our research in daily practice considering the different perspectives of involved stakeholders.

Deze agenda is een strategisch kader voor human capitalontwikkelingen in de creatieve industrie in de Metropoolregio Amsterdam voor de komende vier jaar (2012-2016). De agenda bestrijkt de gehele breedte van de creatieve industrie en richt zich op een interdisciplinaire aanpak en op het stimuleren van een onderzoekende en ondernemende cultuur in het onderwijs. Leidende thema’s zijn: • onderwijs over ondernemerschap;; • vraag en aanbod op elkaar afstemmen;; • alumni & permanente educatie;; • internationalisering. De Creatieve Industrie is de belangrijkste top sector voor de Metropoolregio Amsterdam (CBS monitor topsectoren 2012). Voor de beschrijving van de Creatieve Industrie in de Metropoolregio is een benadering vanuit drie clusters aangehouden: Kunsten & Cultureel Erfgoed, Media & Entertainment, Creatieve Zakelijke Diensten (reclame, mode vormgeving, architectuur). Het Kernteam Creatieve Industrie MRA wil een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de Europese en landelijke ambitie om Nederland in 2020 de meest creatieve economie van Europa te laten zijn. Dit vraagt om continue innovatie, slimme en creatieve oplossingen. Daarvoor is slim, creatief, jong (top)talent onmisbaar. Bij deze ambitie hoort een naadloze verbinding en samenwerking tussen bedrijfsleven en kennis- en onderwijsinstellingen. Het concurrerende klimaat, dynamiek en tempo in de sector vragen om snelle toepassing van nieuwe kennis en technologie en om een voortdurende instroom van nieuw (internationaal) creatief (top)talent en permanente bijscholing. Naast een economische waarde heeft de creatieve sector ook een maatschappelijk toegevoegde waarde. Met name de subsector Kunsten & Cultureel Erfgoed bevordert, met een vaak cross-sectorele aanpak, participatie en cohesie van diverse groepen in de samenleving. De toegevoegde waarde van de creatieve industrie wordt door andere sectoren nog onvoldoende op waarde geschat en benut. Voor professionals en aankomend talent is het cruciaal dat zij de juiste kennis en vaardigheden ontwikkelen om de meerwaarde en identiteit van de creatieve industrie over het voetlicht te brengen. De ondertekenaars van deze HCA hebben de intentie de ingezette samenwerking nog concreter vorm te geven. Het Centre of Expertise, Centrum voor Innovatief Vakmanschap en de Amsterdam Campus zijn hierbij dé vehikels om concrete afspraken en projecten tussen de drie partijen uit de gouden driehoek te realiseren. Prioriteit hierbij is de vraagarticulatie vanuit het bedrijfsleven verder aan te scherpen, afspraken hierover tussen partijen zijn reeds gemaakt. AIM wordt gevraagd twee per jaar een bijeenkomst te organiseren om concrete acties met elkaar te benoemen. Deze HCA, met bijbehorende ambitie en invulling, zal dan ook jaarlijks door het Kernteam geëvalueerd en zo nodig bijgesteld worden. Hierbij blijft afstemming met de MRA –agenda’s: HCA ICT en HCA Toerisme en Congressen gewenst.

Purpose: This is a position paper describing the elements of an international framework for assistive techhnology provision that could guide the development of policies, systems and service delivery procedures across the world. It describes general requirements, quality criteria and possible approaches that may help to enhance the accessibility of affordable and high quality assistive technology solutions. Materials and methods: The paper is based on the experience of the authors, an analysis of the existing literature and the inputs from many colleagues in the field of assistive technology provision. It includes the results of discussions of an earlier version of the paper during an international conference on the topic in August 2017. Results and conclusion: The paper ends with the recommendation to develop an international standard for assistive technology provision. Such a standard can have a major impact on the accessibility of AT for people with disabilities. The paper outlines some the key elements to be included in a standard.

Over the last two decades, institutions for higher education such as universities and colleges have rapidly expanded and as a result have experienced profound changes in processes of research and organization. However, the rapid expansion and change has fuelled concerns about issues such as educators' technology professional development. Despite the educational value of emerging technologies in schools, the introduction has not yet enjoyed much success. Effective use of information and communication technologies requires a substantial change in pedagogical practice. Traditional training and learning approaches cannot cope with the rising demand on educators to make use of innovative technologies in their teaching. As a result, educational institutions as well as the public are more and more aware of the need for adequate technology professional development. The focus of this paper is to look at action research as a qualitative research methodology for studying technology professional development in HE in order to improve teaching and learning with ICTs at the tertiary level. The data discussed in this paper have been drawn from a cross institutional setting at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands. The data were collected and analysed according to a qualitative approach.

Basic human rights, like freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and privacy, are being radically transformed by new technologies. The manifestation of these rights in online spaces is known as “digital rights,” which can be impeded or empowered through the design, governance, and litigation of emerging technologies. Design defines how people encounter the digital world. Some design choices can exploit the right to privacy by commodifying attention through tactics that keep users addicted to maximize profitability; similar design mechanisms and vulnerabilities have facilitated the abuse of journalists and human rights advocates across the globe. But design can also empower human rights, providing novel tools of resistance, accountability, and accessibility, as well as the inclusion of previously underserved voices in the development process. The new capabilities offered by these technologies often transcend political boundaries, presenting complex challenges for meaningful governance and regulation. To address these challenges, collaborations like the Internet Governance Forum and NETmundial have brought together stakeholders from governments, nonprofits, industry, and academia, with efforts to address digital rights like universal internet access. Concurrently, economic forces and international trade negotiations can have substantial impacts on digital rights, with attempts to enforce steeper restrictions on intellectual property. Private actors have also fought to ensure their digital rights through litigation. In Europe, landmark cases have reshaped the international management of data and privacy. In India, indefinite shutdowns of the internet by the government were found to be unconstitutional, establishing online accessibility as a fundamental human right, intimately tied with the right to assembly. And in Africa, litigation has helped ensure freedom of speech and of the press, rights that may affect more individualsas digital technologies continue to shape media. These three spheres—design, diplomacy, and law—illustrate the complexity and ongoing debate to define, protect, and communicate digital rights. A description how technology has alienated us from nature. The currentsocial-technical-ecological system (STES) tends to drive us towards techniques where connection with nature is more difficult. However, techniques can also play a role in restoring human–nature connectedness in (at least) two ways: (1) directly by restoring interest in nature through e.g. new materials, experiences, emotions and/or knowledge (case study 1 and 2); and (2) indirectly by organizing people around an environmental topic (case study 3). Citizen participation may help to counter this alienation and to accelerate the transition to sustainability. Finally, a reflection on the potential for designing technology that contributes to restoring human connectedness to nature or to the reinvention of our relationship with nature.

What do human rights look like when we present them as action-based, bottom-up concepts, and not exclusively as legal items? After all, when we narrow down human rights to a legal concept only, we do not do justice to its meaning. In many professions and branches the idea of human rights is used in jargon, as guiding principles and as a source of inspiration. Human rights make a difference, albeit not necessarily as an enforceable legal concept. This facet of human rights - its practical application beyond lawmakers and lawyers - is deeply underexplored and deserves much more attention. Applied human rights are not per se a matter of lawmaking and enforcement only: it can be part of a mission and vision of companies, it is sometimes at the core of artistic work, it can be a leading principle in social work - especially considering the rights of the child, and it is used as a guiding principle in technological innovation. Human rights are not just for lawyers, but also for managers, engineers, social workers, musicians, local governments, law enforcers, designers and business people. However, and not surprisingly, in each branch the impact and implications of human rights differ. Therefore, it is time for a comprehensive textbook in which the idea of human rights is not exclusively explored as a legal concept, but instead discussed from various applied perspectives. In this book, we explore human rights as an applied concept: as something we do. The chapters are written by an international group of leading experts in a wide range of disciplines and themes, including technology development, social studies, pedagogy, business strategy, public governance, the arts, philosophy and law.
