With this “invitation for action”, the Diversity, Inclusion & Gender Equality (DIGE) Working Group of the AEC - Empowering Artists as Makers in Society project (hereafter, ARTEMIS) welcomes all the AEC member institutions to explore, discuss and implement practices fostering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in Higher Music Education (HME). We invite our colleagues to collectively dream up possible futures for HME through DEI work, which responds to the need to accommodate the plurality of backgrounds, artistic paradigms, access capabilities, identities and aspirations amongst current as well as future students and staff. Through this publication we wish to encourage the AEC memberinstitutions to grasp this simultaneously evident and complex task and to explore what diversity, equity and inclusion could mean if musicians are seen as “makers in, for and of society” (Gaunt et al. 2021). For us as a Working Group, this proactive view has been central to our work from the beginning, as we asked ourselves whether HME institutions find themselves predominantly adapting (or not) to inevitable local and global changes and pressures, and whether the HMEinstitutions could see themselves as part of a network of change makers in society. Focusing on the latter, we see DEI work as being directly connected to the core artistic practices of the institutions. As reflections from many of our colleagues in various AEC member institutions illustrate, the commitment to DEI work nurtures artistic imagination, widens pedagogical approaches, and expands the scope of professional practice.
Om actief te kunnen deelnemen aan de samenleving, moet iemand toegang hebben tot financiële diensten. Onze samenleving wordt steeds meer divers, mobiliteit en sociale media beiden nieuwe kansen voor ondernemende mensen. Ondernemers zijn niet meer plaats gebonden en kennen geen grenzen als zij markten verkennen. Werk en ondernemen worden steeds meer in combinatie opgepakt. Oude vormen ondernemen en werken verdwijnen snel. Deze hybride vormen van ondernemen vragen om een kijk op financiële ondersteuning. Banken die daar niet op inspelen zullen zien dat mensen zelf het heft in handen nemen. Crowdfunding, P2P platforms, en informele spaar – een leen groepen komen snel op als reactie daarop. Mensen willen weer zeggenschap en controle hebben over hun geld. In het buitenland is gebleken dat microfinanciering een goed instrument is om mensen die buitengesloten zijn, weer bij de maatschappij te betrekken ( Financial Inclusion). Microfinanciering leert anders te denken over geld en ondernemend handelen. Microkredieten bewijzen dat je waarde kunt genereren door maatschappelijk verantwoord handelen en de relatie tussen mensen en organisaties weer centraal te stellen. Ondernemende mensen, die worden ondersteund door microfinanciering, blijken vaker voor nieuwe (meng)vormen van ondernemen te kiezen, waarbij het sociale of maatschappelijk belang ook een belangrijke rol speelt ( New Entrepreneurship). Nederland en andere Europese landen kunnen veel leren van de ontwikkelingen die door microfinanciering in ontwikkelingslanden zijn ingezet. Door terugkoppeling (Reversed Transfer of Knowledge South – North) kan deze kennis bijdragen aan de totstandkoming van meer klantgerichte financiële diensten voor ondernemende mensen, ongeacht hun nationaliteit of sociaal-economische status.
This paper discusses the meaning of inclusive education for deaf learners in a way that acknowledges the diversity of learner identities, and outlines problems with normative definitions of inclusive education as advanced by recent interpretations of Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This discussion calls on us to reconsider how the concepts of inclusion and segregation are understood in education for all learners with intersectional identities. We outline the legislative history of the CRPD and Article 24, show the active involvement of deaf advocacy organisations, and highlight contradictions with this history in the CRPD Committee’s recent General Comment No. 4 on Article 24. We provide examples of innovative models of inclusive education for deaf learners that provide an education in sign language and discuss the implications of these arguments for inclusive education as a whole.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) involves uncontrollable drinking despite negative consequences, a challenge amplified in festivals. ARise is a project using Augmented Reality (AR) to prevent AUD by helping festival visitors refuse alcohol and other substances. Based on the first Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) for clinical AUD treatment, ARise uses a smartphone app with AR glasses to project virtual humans that tempt visitors to drink alcohol. Users interact in a safe and personalized way with these virtual humans through phone, voice, and gesture interactions. The main aim of the project is to provide new research in the arts by focusing on the concept of the inter-sensorial as an essential text for the creation of art and culture. It is designed to foreground the role of the sensorium as an underpinning source for many aspects of thought and cultural heritage. This project will blend visual arts with applied arts and traditional local traditions, revealing new light on the artistic facets and customs which are usually overlooked.The extended residencies will promote transnational mobility for emerging artists, facilitating international relationships between different artistic and cultural contexts within the EU. This will promote transnational interconnectivity between artists and cultures, creating a resourceful intercultural fertilisation, endorsing cultural diversity, social inclusion and most of all, further research on the intercultural facets.Through the various side-activities to take place during the mobilities of the artists, the project aims to strengthen and develop diverse audiences by producing the necessary elements for a dialogue, illustrating interpretations of rich layers of tangible and intangible heritage and legacies of European countries related to the tradition of sensorial experiences and how they evolved around traditional customs. Furthermore, it also aims to rethink and project new and innovative ways for documenting, preserving and communicating data to different audiences.
Digital innovations in the field of immersive Augmented Reality (AR) can be a solution to offer adults who are mentally, physically or financially unable to attend sporting events such as premier league football a stadium and match experience. This allows them to continue to connect with their social networks. In the intended project, AR content will be further developed with the aim of evoking the stadium experience of home matches as much as possible. The extent to which AR enriches the experience is then tested in an experiment, in which the experience of a football match with and without AR enrichment is measured in a stadium setting and in a home setting. The experience is measured with physiological signals. In addition, a subjective experience measure is also being developed and benchmarked (the experience impact score). Societal issueInclusion and health: The joint experience of (top) sports competitions forms a platform for vulnerable adults, with a limited social capital, to build up and maintain the social networks that are so necessary for them.
