This paper introduces the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and describes its evolution from a concept proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999 through its public emergence in 2005 in a United Nations ITU report entitled “The Internet of Things”, to the present day where IoT devices are available as off-the-shelf products from major manufacturers. Using a systematic study of public literature, the paper presents a five-phase categorisation of the development of the Internet-of-Things from its beginnings to the present day. Four mini case studies are included to illustrate some of the issues involved. Finally, the paper discusses some of the big issues facing future developers and marketers of Internet-of-Things based products ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) through to customer privacy and acceptance finishing with an optimistic assessment of the future of the Internet-of-Things.

A resource optimization methodology is proposed for application in long range wide area networks (LoRaWANs). Using variable neighborhood search (VNS) and a minimum-cost spanning tree algorithm, it reduces the implementation and the maintenance costs of such low power networks. Performance evaluations were conducted in LoRaWANs with LoRa repeaters to increase coverage, in scenario where the number and the location of the repeaters are determined by the VNS metaheuristic. Parameters such as spread factor ((Formula presented.)), bandwidth and transmission power were adjusted to minimize the network’s total energy per useful bit ((Formula presented.)) and the total data collection time. The importance of the (Formula presented.) in the trade-off between ((Formula presented.)) and time on-air is evaluated, considering a device scaling factor. Simulation results, obtained after model adjustments with experimental data, show that, in networks with few associated devices, there is a preference for small values of (Formula presented.) aiming at reduction of (Formula presented.). The usage of large (Formula presented.) ’s becomes relevant when reach extensions are required. The results also demonstrate that, for networks with high number of nodes, the scaling of devices over time become relevant in the fitness function, forcing an equal distribution of time slots per (Formula presented.) to avoid discrepancies in the time data collection.

Hundreds of sensors in our smartphones, cars, houses and other "smart" devices feed the IoT, that monitors both our functioning, and that of the smart devices. In 2050 the Internet of Things - which processes and stores all sensor data - will require a multiple of all the current energy together in air traffic and meat consumption. Living an environmentally friendly life will be just a drop in the ocean. With every step we take, servers all over the world start to analyze and store sensor data from the smartphone in our pocket. Habermas states that the system supplants ("colonizes") the lifeworld. It is of great importance that economic and social disciplines make a serious effort to restore the balance between the system world and the lifeworld.

The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has led to many innovative technologies. The aim of this study was to understand the motives for using the Internet, and its associations with users' attitudes, social values, and relational involvement. Also, this study attempted to crossculturally compare the difference in the pattern of motives and the associations among three countries ' the US, the Netherlands, and S. Korea. The design of methods was based on examination and revision of uses and gratification approach toward Internet users. Findings from factor analysis revealed that information seeking and Self-Improvement were the dominant and common reasons for using the Internet across three countries. The differences in the composition of motives in each country were also reported. Strong correlations across countries were found between all the motives and satisfaction of the Internet. Expectation and positive evaluation of the Internet were also important attitudes associated with Internet use motives. Postmaterialist value showed strong association with motives of information seeking and Self-Improvement. Community involvement was significantly associated with Internet use motives in Korean users.

Technological disruptions like the Internet of Things (IoT) drive enterprises to redefine their business models to create and capture value, and eventually, to stay competitive. The need for business model innovation may be urgent, yet it is not always clear what to change in a business model. In these cases, business model exploration is needed. Within academia and practice, business model tools are mainly focused on formalizing single business model designs rather than facilitating systematic exploration of alternative business models. In this study, we present the design and prototype of a digital tool created to facilitate business model exploration. We use Design Science Research (DSR) as our research approach. In this paper, we present the results from the first cycle evaluation of the design and prototype.

Firstly, we will show that the way companies shape their customer interaction, and not their sector or size, determine the market segmentation. Revolutionary advances in technology have been seen in many industries, with the IIoT being a prime example. The IIoT creates a network of interconnected devices, allowing smooth communication and interoperability in industrial settings. This not only boosts efficiency, productivity, and safety but also provides transformative solutions for various sectors. This research looks into open-source IIoT and edge platforms that are applicable to a range of applications with the aim of finding and developing high-potential solutions. It highlights the effect of open-source IIoT and edge computing platforms on traditional IIoT applications, showing how these platforms make development and deployment processes easier. Popular open-source IIoT platforms include DeviceHive and Thingsboard, while EdgeX Foundry is a key platform for edge computing, allowing IIoT applications to be deployed closer to data sources, thus reducing latency and conserving bandwidth. This study seeks to identify potential future domains for the implementation of IIoT solutions using these open-source platforms. Additionally, each sector is evaluated based on various criteria, such as development requirement analyses, market demand projections, the examination of leading companies and emerging startups in each domain, and the application of the International Patent Classification (IPC) scheme for in-depth sector analysis.
