We zitten momenteel in een transitie-periode waarin we van een lineaire economie op basis van bestaande business modellen gericht op economische waarde maximalisatie toegaan naar een circulaire economie, waar business modellen streven naar waarde behoud. De volgende stap is de overgang naar een regeneratieve of restauratieve economie, waarin niet alleen economische waarde, maar ook ecologische en sociale waarde wordt gecreëerd (meervoudige waardecreatie). Vanuit accounting perspectief is een parallelle ontwikkeling zichtbaar. Ons huidige accounting systeem is met name gericht op economische waarde. Als gevolg van de transitie van een lineaire economie naar een circulaire economie, zijn er accounting modellen en frameworks in ontwikkeling gericht op meervoudige waardecreatie. De auteurs zijn echter van mening dat in de literatuur een cruciale gap bestaat tussen de ontwikkeling van accounting en meervoudige waardecreatie, en dat huidige modellen en frameworks gericht op meervoudige waarde vooral leiden tot ‘greenwashing’. In deze bijdrage gaan wij na in hoeverre de vigerende concepten van accounting bruikbaar zijn om te sturen op meervoudige waarde. Onder sturen wordt in dit kader bedoeld het bepalen, meten en waarderen. Dit doen wij aan de hand van een conceptuele analyse waarbij we de toepassing van de vigerende accounting concepten ten aanzien van profit vergelijken met mogelijke toepassing van deze concepten in relatie tot people en planet. Wij concluderen dat deze concepten over het algemeen niet toepasbaar zijn voor people en planet. Wij stellen daarom een alternatieve benadering voor, waarbij wij menen dat vigerende accounting concepten grotendeels toepasbaar zijn op people en planet. Dit is gebaseerd op een aanpak waarin het huidige ontologische uitgangspunt van accounting wordt verlaten en waarin we een aangepast ontologisch uitgangspunt verder uitwerken aan de hand van de Triple Depreciation Line (TDL) van Rambaud & Richard (2015). Tenslotte hebben we kritiekpunten geformuleerd op de TDL systematiek en stellen we een alternatieve TDL systematiek voor. Hiermee beoogt dit paper een bijdrage te leveren aan het inzichtelijk maken van de praktische en conceptuele problemen bij de toepassing van vigerende accounting concepten in een circulaire economie, om vervolgens mogelijke oplossingsrichtingen aan te reiken, gericht op bescherming, herstel en regeneratie van natuurlijk en sociaal kapitaal.

We are currently in a transition moving from a linear economy grounded on economic value maximization based on material transformation to a circular economy. Core of this transition is organising value preservation from various yet interlinked perspectives. The underlying fundamental shift is to move away from mere financial value maximization towards multiple value creation (WCED, 1987; Jonker, 2014; Raworth, 2017). This implies moving from mere economic value creation, to simultaneously and in a balanced way creating ecological and social value. A parallel development supporting this transition can be observed in accounting & control. Elkington (1994) introduced the triple bottom line (TBL) concept, referring to the economic, ecological and social impact of companies. The TBL should be seen more as a conceptual way of thinking, rather than a practical innovative accounting tool to monitor and control sustainable value (Rambaud & Richard, 2015). However, it has inspired accounting & control practitioners to develop accounting tools that not only aim at economic value (‘single capital’ accounting) but also at multiple forms of capital (‘multi capital’ accounting or integrated reporting). This has led to a variety of integrated reporting platforms such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), International Integrated Reporting Framework (IIRC), Dow Jones Sustainable Indexes (DJSI), True Costing, Reporting 3.0, etc. These integrated reporting platforms and corresponding accounting concepts, can be seen as a fundament for management control systems focussing on multiple value creation. This leads to the following research question: How are management control systems designed in practice to drive multiple value creation?

Abstract. In recent years circular economy has become more important for the development of many places including cities. Traditionally, urban development policies have mainly been aiming to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of neighbourhoods. However, technical and ecologic aspects have their effects too and need to go hand in hand. This paper is based on an urban area experiment in the Dutch city of Utrecht. In order to assess urban area developments, typically rather straight-forward quantitative indicators have been used. However, it has proved more complicated to assess multifaceted developments of the area studied in this paper. With the City Model Canvas a multi-layered model is being used to better assess the impact of the urban development being studied. Key findings include that the project studied resulted in more space for companies from the creative industry and the settlement of local ‘circular’ entrepreneurs and start-ups, although it remains unclear to what extent these benefit from each other’s presence. The increase in business activity resulted in more jobs, but it is again unclear whether this led to more social inclusion. From an environmental point of view the project activities resulted in less raw materials being used, although activities and public events bring nuisance to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

More than 25!years after Moore’s first introduction of the public value concept in 995, the concept is now widely used, but its operationalization is still considered difficult. This paper presents the empirical results of a study analyzing the application of the public value concept in Higher Education Institutions, thereby focusing on how to account for public value. The paper shows how Dutch universities of applied sciences operationalize the concept ‘public value’, and how they report on the outcome achievements. The official strategy plans and annual reports for FY2016 through FY2018 of the ten largest institutions were used. While we find that all the institutions selected aim to deliver public value, they still use performance indicators that have a more narrow orientation, and are primarily focused on processes, outputs, and service delivery quality. However, we also observe that they use narratives to show the public value they created. In this way this paper contributes to the literature on public value accounting.

De coronapandemie heeft een enorme impact op het mentale welzijn van de Nederlandse bevolking. Gebaseerd op een grootschalig panelonderzoek (N = 22.696) naar de sociale impact van COVID-19, onderzoekt dit artikel ten eerste welke sociale groepen het meest vatbaar zijn voor de gevolgen van de pandemie op de geestelijke gezondheid. Ten tweede onderzoeken we of sociaal kapitaal bescherming biedt tegen deze gevolgen. We vinden dat de impact van COVID-19 op de geestelijke gezondheid aanzienlijk is en dat deze in de loop van 2020 is toegenomen. Vrouwen, jongeren, respondenten met lage inkomens en/of een slechte zelf ervaren gezondheid, ervaren relatief meer angst en stress als gevolg van de pandemie. We vinden geen verschil tussen respondenten met of zonder migratieachtergrond. Sociaal kapitaal (ontvangen steun, vertrouwen in mensen en in instellingen) heeft het verwachte effect: hoe meer steun en vertrouwen, hoe minder angst en stress. Er is een bemiddelingseffect. Ouderen, respondenten met hoge inkomens en/of een goede gezondheid ervaren minder angst en stress, deels omdat ze meer sociaal kapitaal hebben. Dit is anders voor vrouwen. Zij zouden zelfs meer angst en stress ervaren in vergelijking met mannen, ware het niet dat zij meer sociaal kapitaal hebben. We concluderen dus dat sociaal kapitaal inderdaad enige bescherming biedt tegen de negatieve gevolgen van COVID-19 voor de geestelijke gezondheid.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find determinants about risk resilience and develop a new risk resilience approach for (agricultural) enterprises. This approach creates the ability to respond resiliently to major environmental challenges and changes in the short term and adjust the management of the organization, and to learn and transform to adapt to the new environment in the long term while creating multiple value creation. Design/methodology: The authors present a new risk resilience approach for multiple value creation of (agricultural) enterprises, which consists of a main process starting with strategy design, followed by an environmental analysis, stakeholder collaboration, implement ESG goals, defining risk expose & response options, and report, learn & evaluate. In each step the organizational perspective, as well as the value chain/area perspective is considered and aligned. The authors have used focus groups and analysed literature from and outside the field of finance and accounting, to design this new approach. Findings: Researchers propose a new risk resilience approach for (agricultural) enterprises, based on a narrative about transforming to multiple value creation, founded determinants of risk resilience, competitive advantage and agricultural resilience. Originality and value: This study contributes by conceptualizing risk resilience for (agricultural) enterprises, by looking through a lens of multiple value creation in a dynamic context and based on insights from different fields, actual ESG knowledge, and determinants for risk resilience, competitive advantage and agricultural resilience.

Although the attention for neurodiversity in human resource management (HRM) is growing, neurodivergent individuals are still primarily supported from a deficit-oriented paradigm, which points towards individuals' deviation from neurotypical norms. Following the HRM process model, our study explored to what extent a strengths-based HRM approach to the identification, use, and development of strengths of neurodivergent groups is intended, implemented, and perceived in organizations. Thirty participants were interviewed, including HRM professionals (n=15), supervisors of neurodivergent employees (n=4), and neurodivergent employees (n=11). Our findings show that there is significant potential in embracing the strengths-based approach to promote neurodiversity-inclusion, for instance with the use of job crafting practices or (awareness) training to promote strengths use. Still, the acknowledgement of neurodivergent individuals' strengths in the workplace depends on the integration of the strengths-based approach into a supportive framework of HR practices related to strengths identification, use, and development. Here, particular attention should be dedicated to strengths development for neurodivergent employees (e.g., optimally balancing strengths use). By adopting the strengths-based HRM approach to neurodiversity as a means of challenging the ableist norms of organizations, we add to the HRM literature by contributing to the discussion on how both research and organizations can optimally support an increasingly diverse workforce by focusing on individual strengths

This paper focuses on the topical and problematic area of social innovations. The aim of this paper is to develop an original approach to the allocation of social innovations, taking into account characteristics such as the degree of state participation, the scope of application, the type of initiations as well as the degree of novelty, which will be elaborated on further in this article. In order to achieve this goal, the forty-two most successful social innovations were identified and systematized. The results of this study demonstrated that 73.5% of social innovations are privately funded, most of them operating on an international level with a high degree of novelty. Moreover, 81% of all social innovations are civic initiatives. Social innovations play an important role in the growth of both developed and less developed countries alike as highlighted in our extensive analysis
