Aim: Participation of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder hardly occurs in settings outside of home and school. Little is known about how their participation is influenced by environmental factors. This study explored how and why adolescents with autism spectrum disorder perceive aspects of their environment as facilitators or barriers to their participation outside of home and school. Method: This explanatory case study explored the participation experiences of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (15–21 years) from Zurich and surroundings with in-depth interviews and photo-elicitation, using photos made by the participants during activities outside of home and school. Data was analysed with a 7-step procedure. Result: The presence of two main themes seemed necessary to facilitate participation outside of home and school: “environmental prerequisites to attend activities”, which consists of five subthemes, such as “the company of trusted persons” and “the provision of knowledge and information”, and “social interchange and engagement”, which consists of three subthemes and describes how actual involvement can be supported. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the influence of trusted persons on adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, and the need to extend the support network for these adolescents to other individuals, services and society so that their participation in activities can be encouraged.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Malawi is becoming a significant issue not only because of the complexity of the social, economic and political environment in which companies operate, but also because of the social and environmental impacts which business operations have on the wider Malawian society. In this chapter, it is shown that the CSR agenda currently pursued by companies in Malawi takes both the normative and instrumental forms, and is largely shaped by the political and socio-economical factors at national and global levels. The chapter is structured as follows: the first section addresses the historical development of CSR and perceptions various actors hold about the forms of responsibilities companies can assume in Malawi; a discussion of the various antecedents of CSR in Malawi. This is followed by an intermediate section which provides CSR themes and priority issues. The final two sections explore the different approaches companies pursue in the implementation of CSR agendas—but also examine the perceived barriers to CSR in Malawi. The chapter concludes by mapping out the future prospects of CSR in Malawi.

In Europe we consume 50 million tonnes of plastic a year. The use of plastic has increased fiftyfold in fifty years and the growth continues. Collecting and recycling plastic is thus essential to avoid the pollution of the land and sea. However, generally, post-consumer plastics have very low recycling rates, at present only 7% of plastic used in Europe comes from recycled polymers. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most recycled materials; in 2017 more than 57% of PET bottles were recycled in Europe, used in both packaging and fibre applications. Especially transparent PET bottles have high collecting and recycling rates over Europe. However, the plastics have very different value depending on their colour. If the plastic is even very lightly coloured, the plastic will lose a large percentage of its value. Decolouring plastic is complicated and currently no efficient and economically viable system exists. FT Innovations, a SME with the core-expertise in extraction, sees potential in developing a sustainable decolouration process with a new extraction technology, which offers significant potential in replacing hazardous, relatively expensive and environmentally damaging organic solvents that are currently used on decolouration. Avans has relevant expertise in both (biobased) plastic colourants and the extraction techniques as demonstrated in previous projects, and therefore FT innovations approached Avans with the request to assist in the feasibility study. The consortium is further strengthen by CCT Oss with their strong industrial know-how of colourants and their use in plastics and Plastic Company with their core activity on recycling of PET and other plastic materials.
