The role of smart cities in order to improve older people’s quality of life, sustainability and opportunities, accessibility, mobility, and connectivity is increasing and acknowledged in public policy and private sector strategies in countries all over the world. Smart cities are one of the technological-driven initiatives that may help create an age-friendly city. Few research studies have analysed emerging countries in terms of their national strategies on smart or age-friendly cities. In this study, Romania which is predicted to become one of the most ageing countries in the European Union is used as a case study. Through document analysis, current initiatives at the local, regional, and national level addressing the issue of smart and age-friendly cities in Romania are investigated. In addition, a case study is presented to indicate possible ways of the smart cities initiatives to target and involve older adults. The role of different stakeholders is analysed in terms of whether initiatives are fragmentary or sustainable over time, and the importance of some key factors, such as private–public partnerships and transnational bodies. The results are discussed revealing the particularities of the smart cities initiatives in Romania in the time frame 2012–2020, which to date, have limited connection to the age-friendly cities agenda. Current global trends show that different regions of the globe face an increased level of urbanization, and there is a swift aging process from the Western to the Eastern European countries. Romania is a typical country expecting to triple the percentage of the older population aged 65 and over in the next 30 years. Urban policies often neglect such demographic perspectives. The World Health Organization launched the age-friendly city and communities' movement that proposes solutions for older people to age actively by improving their welfare and social participation. The concept of an age-friendly city comprised eight dimensions: (1) outdoor spaces and buildings; (2) transportation; (3) housing; (4) social participation; (5) respect and social inclusion; (6) civic participation and employment; (7) communication and information; and (8) community support and health services. It raises some important questions about how to measure and evaluate urban policies in this framework. Current work presents the process of adaptation and validation for the Romanian older population of a standardized tool - the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Questionnaire (AFCCQ). The validation study was conducted in Bucharest (n = 424) on a representative sample of older people, who were asked to rate their life in the city, following the eight dimensions and an additional one regarding their financial situation. Four clusters were differentiated in the analysis, resulting in different views of older adults on their experience of living in the city, showing that people's socio-economic status, their living arrangements and health situation play a role in shaping their views on city life. The results highlight the importance of standardized tools to design urban policies following an age-friendly agenda.

The development of ‘age-friendly cities’ has become a major area of work in the field of ageing and the built environment. This movement is driven by the observation that cities are home to an ever-increasing ageing population. Over the past decade, a multitude of age-friendly initiatives have been developed with the aim of making physical and social environments more favourable for older people's well-being, health and ability to live in the community. This article explores ten key questions associated with the age-friendly cities and communities' movement, with a particular focus on the built environment. It provides an overview of the history of the age-friendly cities' movement and the underlying models, the aspects of the built environment that are relevant for age-friendly cities, the ways age-friendliness can be evaluated, and the interactions between age-friendly cities initiatives and other strategic agendas such as smart cities. The paper concludes by discussing future perspectives and possible directions for further development of the age-friendly movement. © 2021 The Authors. As the World Health Organization launched its age-friendly city and communities programme nearly two decades ago, it raises concerns how to measure and evaluate urban policies concerning age-friendliness. This work presents the translation, validation and results of survey research for the older population of two age-friendly Polish cities (Kraków and Wrocław), using the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Questionnaire. The study was conducted with two representative samples of older people living in Kraków (n = 392) and Wrocław (n = 409), who were asked to rate the age-friendliness of their cities. Based on the cluster analysis three typologies of older people emerged, reflecting the different views on their experience of living in the city. These resulting typologies showed that people's socio-economic status, living arrangements and health situation play an important role in how they experience city life. Results highlight the value of quantitative city evaluation in order to design and better monitor urban policies following an age-friendly agenda. The most important findings of particular relevance to public age-friendly policy in Poland is to secure the need for the older person to receive assistance with daily activities and mobility especially among those who do not see the positive aspects of living in an age-friendly city.

There is an increasing interest in outdoor play, both in research and in policy. However, in (re)designing, planning and managing the public space, there is still limited attention for children’s actual playing behavior. A lot of urban planning decisions are based on adults’ perceptions of children’s playing behavior and focus on formal play spaces, rather than on their actual behavior and on other, more informal, play places children might also use. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore where children play outdoors, with whom and what kind of activities they are performing there. Between February 2022 and March 2023 1,127 – mainly primary school - children were systematically observed after school in three post-war residential districts in three cities in The Netherlands. The majority of the children were between 5-8 years old (50%). Above the age of 8 years, substantially more boys (70%) than girls (30%) were playing outdoors. Most of the children (79%) were playing with other children, 8% were playing alone. The playground was the most popular play space (36% of the observed children were playing there), followed by public sports fields (14%) and sidewalks (13%). With respect to the type of activities, relaxing (21%) was the most common activity, followed by ball sports (14%), climbing or hanging (11%), swinging (10%), and riding on wheels (9%). This study showed differences in play behavior by gender, age, district and play space and stress the need for a broader definition of play, and for focusing on formal as well as informal play spaces.

The future of age-friendly cities and communities (AFCC) needs to adapt and be more agile to the changing needs of residents of all ages. The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing ‘the Decade' provides a unique opportunity to further strengthen age-friendly environments. The Decade brings together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academics, the media and the private sector for 10 years of concerted action to improve the lives of older people, their families and the communities in which they live. This editorial serves as a thought piece and outlines recommendations for the imminent and future discourse surrounding digital transformation, digital skills/literacy and financial implications on societal citizens in the AFCC discourse. Action is needed now, and this can only be achieved by talking openly about the real issues and concerns affecting people in our communities and in the future.

The World Health Organization (WHO) strives to assist and inspire cities to become more ‘age-friendly’ through the Global Age-Friendly Cities Guide. An age-friendly city offers a supportive environment that enables residents to grow older actively within their families, neighbourhoods and civil society, and offers extensive opportunities for their participation in the community. In the attempts to make cities age-friendly, ageism may interact with these developments. The goal of this study was to investigate the extent to which features of age-friendly cities, both facilitators and hindrances, are visible in the city scape of the Dutch municipalities of The Hague and Zoetermeer and whether or not ageism is manifested explicitly or implicitly. A qualitative photoproduction study based on the Checklist of Essential Features of Age-Friendly Cities was conducted in five neighbourhoods. Both municipalities have a large number of visual age-friendly features, which are manifested in five domains of the WHO model, namely Communication and information; Housing; Transportation; Community support and health services; and Outdoor spaces and buildings. Age-stereotypes, both positive and negative, can be observed in the domain of Communication and information, especially in the depiction of third agers as winners. At the same time, older people and age-friendly features are very visible in the cityscapes of both municipalities, and this is a positive expression of the changing demographics. More and more municipalities are, fortunately, working on play-friendly public spaces. However, many policy visions and investments are still based on assumptions made by municipal officials or suppliers of play equipment.

Cities worldwide are growing at unprecedented rates, compromising their surrounding landscapes, and consuming many scarce resources. As a consequence, this will increase the compactness of cities and will also decrease the availability of urban green space. In recent years, many Dutch municipalities have cut back on municipal green space and itsmaintenance. To offer a liveable environment in 30 to 50 years, cities must face challenges head-on and strive to create green urban areas that build on liveable and coherent sustainable circular subsystems.
