In this study we analyze a large dataset of Facebook activities of local restaurants in Amsterdam, Houston, London and New York. Doing so gives broad insights in their Facebook usage and the communication patterns between them and their costumers. The dataset is quite rich and the presented statistics are merely the tip of the iceberg.

The essays collected here are based on two decades of engagement with the residents of the slums of Govindpuri in India’s capital, Delhi. The book presents stories of many kinds, from speculative treatises, via the recollection of a thousand everyday conversations, to an account of the making of a radio documentary.Zig-zagging through the lanes of Govindpuri, Listening into Others explores the vibrant sounds emanating from slum culture. Redefining ethnography as listening in passing, Chandola excels at narrating the stories of the everyday. The ubiquity of smartphones, sonic selfies, wailing, the ethics of wearing jeans, the crossroad rituals of elections, the political agency of slum-dwellers, the war of the sexes through bodily gestures, and conflicts over ownership of both property and sound generated in the slums — these are among the many encounters Chandola opens up to the reader.Slums are anxious spaces in the materiality, experience, and imagination of a city. They are the by-products of the violent and exploitative mechanisms of urbanization. What becomes of the slum-dwellers, who universally, across centuries, cities and continents, befall similar fates of being discriminated, reckoned to be the scum of the earth, and a burden on society? By listening to identified others and amplifying their voices in their own vocabularies and grammar, Tripta Chandola’s praxis creates a methodological, political, and poetic rupture. Professional interventions are rarely successful when used to “normalize” the behaviour of a disruptive group of Dutch-Caribbean migrants. Surprisingly a large number of professionals have not succeeded in assimilating a relatively small group. Foucault developed a means of analysing power mechanisms, which is essential to understanding how non-conformist groups are turned into “normal” subjects. If, following Foucault, we conceive of professional interventions as power strategies, we may wonder what might undermine their effectiveness. This is part of a broader research question which asks whether Foucault’s description of normalizing power offers sufficient means to describe power strategies as reciprocal interaction. My thesis is that the concept “logics”, as used by Mol, offers tools that are a useful addition to Foucault’s theory. The ways in which Dutch professionals view problematic Dutch-Caribbean migrants and the interventions they use can be described as different logics.This enables us to recognize the similarities and frictions between different practices.

The Co-Design Pressure Cooker was set up to gather knowledge on co-design in product development activities of Small-to-Medium Enterprises(SMEs). This booklet gives an impression of ten projects conducted in the Province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. In these ten projects, a total of 22 companies were involved. 5000 booklets have already been printed in Dutch and handed out to SMEs for knowledge dissemination. We have received ample requests from the international community, which leads us to believe that there is an international audience for the cases conducted and knowledge gathered. This is why we decided to publish an English version of this booklet. The booklet will be followed by a scientific publication on the knowledge gathered for the academic community. Hoe bereiden we studenten voor op een economie die niet alleen financiële waarde creëert, maar ook maatschappelijke en ecologische impact heeft? Het Centre for Economic Transformation van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) introduceert steward-ownership - een docentenhandleiding & teaching case.Steward-ownership scheidt economische rechten (winst) van stemrechten (besluitvorming), zodat een onderneming duurzaam kan blijven opereren zonder afhankelijk te zijn van kortetermijnwinsten voor aandeelhouders. Grote bedrijven zoals Patagonia kozen recentelijk voor dit model om hun maatschappelijke missie veilig te stellen. Maar wat betekent dit in de praktijk? En welke alternatieven bestaan er voor traditionele aandeelhouderschapsmodellen?In deze teaching case maken we studenten bewust van de rol die eigenaarschap van ondernemingen speelt in de transitie naar een eerlijke en duurzame economie. We bekijken de traditionele vorm van aandeelhouderschap en ontdekken hoe steward-ownership een alternatief biedt voor winstmaximalisatie voor enkelen ten koste van welzijn en welvaart van velen. Met behoud van ruimte voor ondernemerschap.Deze teaching case biedt een toegankelijke introductie in steward-ownership en is speciaal ontwikkeld voor studenten in het economische en maatschappelijke domein. Docenten kunnen direct aan de slag met:- Een docentenhandleiding met uitleg en lesdoelen.- Een geanimeerde infographic die het concept helder uitlegt.- Zes interactieve werkvormen, waaronder groepsdiscussies, rollenspellen en een pressure cooker.- Een hoofdtekst voor studenten, aangevuld met verdiepende hoofdstukken, afgestemd op hr, sociaal ondernemerschap en juridische vraagstukken.De case past bij uiteenlopende opleidingen in het economisch en maatschappelijk domein van HBO en WO vanaf derde jaar Bachelor t/m Masterniveau. De opgedane kennis is actueel en relevant voor studenten die gaan werken in het bedrijfsleven of zelf gaan ondernemen. Zij herkennen de voor- en nadelen van klassieke vormen van eigenaarschap. Ook zijn ze zich bewust van alternatieve mogelijkheden van eigenaarschap die naadloos aansluiten bij een nieuwe economie.Met deze les bereid je studenten voor op een toekomst in de nieuwe economie, en laat je ze ervaren hoe steward-ownership een deel van de oplossing kan zijn!
