In the Netherlands there is discussion about the best way to teach mathematics, especially in the case of primary school students. Being able to identify and understand pupils’ multiple problem solving strategies is one of the pillars of pedagogy. However, it is very demanding for teachers, since it requires to notice and analyze pupils’ mathematical thinking and to understanding their actions. The skill to notice and analyze a student’s mathematical thinking is usually not emphasized in Dutch primary school teacher training. It is important to find ways to help teacher-students to analyze student mathematical reasoning, and to learn to recognize the importance of such analysis. Sherin and van Es used the concept of video clubs to help teachers in US schools to notice and analyze their students’ mathematical thinking. In such video clubs, students jointly discuss their filmed lessons. This leads to the following research question:How can video clubs be used to teach students who are learning to become primary school teachers to analyze their pupils’ mathematical thinking and to learn to recognize the importance of such analysis?This paper describes a study that monitors a video club with four participants.

The growing availability of data offers plenty of opportunities for data driven innovation of business models for SMEs like interactive media companies. However, SMEs lack the knowledge and processes to translate data into attractive propositions and design viable data-driven business models. In this paper we develop and evaluate a practical method for designing data driven business models (DDBM) in the context of interactive media companies. The development follows a design science research approach. The main result is a step-by-step approach for designing DDBM, supported by pattern cards and game boards. Steps consider required data sources and data activities, actors and value network, revenue model and implementation aspects. Preliminary evaluation shows that the method works as a discussion tool to uncover assumptions and make assessments to create a substantiated data driven business model.

Phd Thesis Higher professional education aims to prepare graduates for the complexity of professional practices. The development of conceptual understanding is important to deal adequately with this complexity, especially in an unstructured professional domain such as international business. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the concept conceptual understanding in this professional domain, how it can be measured, what it looks like, how it changes, and in what ways it differs between students. The dissertation comprises five empirical studies for which data collection took place at a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands.
