This book brings together contributions that analyse how subcultural myths develop and how they can be studied. Through critical engagement with (history) writing and other sources on subcultures by contemporaries, veterans, popular media and researchers, it aims to establish: how stories and histories of subcultures emerge and become canonized through the process of mythification; which developments and actors are crucial in this process; and finally how researchers like historians, sociologists, and anthropologists should deal with these myths and myth-making processes. By considering these issues and questions in relation to mythmaking, this book provides new insights on how to research the identity, history, and cultural memory of youth subcultures.

Previous investigations of consumer subcultures in the CCT tradition focused primarily on consumer behaviours, feelings, experiences and meanings of consumption. This paper advocates that in order to deeply understand and interpret a particular subculture, researchers in consumer culture should consider more thoroughly the interaction between consumers and producers in consumption markets. This argument is illustrated with a research project on lifestyle sports. From the results of this study it appears that producers play a vital and interdependent role in meaning and interpretation processes. It is argued that processes in which consumers give meaning to activities can not be isolated from the processes in which producers ascribe meanings to activities, settings and markets. In this 'circuit of culture', production and consumption are not completely separate spheres of existence but rather are mutually constitutive of one another (Du Gay, Hall, Janes, Mackay, & Negus, 1997).

Online support communities are gaining attention among child-attracted persons (CAPs). Though research has largely focused on the negative consequences these environments create for potential offending, they may also provide a beneficial alternative to more formal treatment settings. To assess the utility for clinical and therapeutic purposes, this analysis focused on subcultural dynamics to examine self-reported wellbeing outcomes of participation in a Dutch forum for CAPs. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with moderators, members and mental health professionals involved in the community. Thematic analyses demonstrated that by means of informal social control, bonds of trust and social relational education, the network aims to regulate the behavior and enhance the wellbeing of its marginalized participants. Key outcomes include a decreased sense of loneliness and better coping with stigma, to the point that participants experience less suicidal thoughts. Association with prosocial peers also helps to set moral boundaries regarding behavior towards children, although we cannot fully rule out potential adverse influences. Online support networks offer a stepping stone to professional care that fits individual needs of CAPs, while also providing an informal environment that overcomes limitations of physical therapy and that extents principles of existing prevention and desistance approaches. Aanleiding De luchtvaart wordt steeds veiliger. Toch zijn er alleen al in Nederland jaarlijks zo'n 11.000 issues met luchtvaartveiligheid. Wereldwijd vinden er elke dag ongelukken plaats die leiden tot schade aan vliegtuigen. Om de veiligheid verder te verbeteren is er nieuwe internationale regelgeving opgesteld. Onder deze regels moeten de maatschappijen alle incidenten en ongelukken analyseren en zo veiligheidsrisico's identificeren nog voordat deze zich voordoen. Het probleem is dat kleine en middelgrote luchtvaartmaatschappijen onvoldoende vliegbewegingen maken om genoeg goede data hiervoor te hebben. Doelstelling De centrale vraag die de onderzoekers in dit RAAK-project willen beantwoorden: Wat is de relatie tussen veiligheidsmanagement en veiligheidsperformance van luchtvaartmaatschappijen? Het onderzoek wil kleine en middelgrote luchtvaartmaatschappijen helpen bij het meten van de veiligheid van hun bedrijf, zonder dat ze grote hoeveelheden veiligheidsdata tot hun beschikking hebben. Het onderzoek zal geschikte veiligheidsindicatoren identificeren, een longlist ontwikkelen met meetwaarden voor safetymanagement, en een shortlist genereren en valideren van bruikbare meetwaarden. Deze kennis wordt vertaald in een online dashboard voor de industrie, zodat de veiligheid objectiever beoordeeld kan worden. Beoogde resultaten Een concreet resultaat van dit project is een online dashboard waarmee kleine en middelgrote luchtvaartmaatschappijen hun veiligheid kunnen beoordelen, inclusief handleiding. Er zullen masterclasses veiligheid worden georganiseerd voor de luchtvaartindustrie. Het projectteam zal de opgedane kennis verspreiden via wetenschappelijke artikelen in relevante peer-reviewed tijdschriften, een website, presentaties bij bedrijven en tijdens bijeenkomsten, en een afsluitende conferentie.
My research investigates the concept of permacomputing, a blend of the words permaculture and computing, as a potential field of convergence of technology, arts, environmental research and activism, and as a subject of future school curricula in art and design. This concept originated in online subcultures, and is currently restricted to creative coding communities. I study in what way permacomputing principles may be used to redefine how art and design education is taught. More generally, I want to research the potential of permacomputing as a critical, sustainable, and practical alternative to the way digital technology is being taught in art education, where students mostly rely on tools and techniques geared towards maximising productivity and mass consumption. This situation is at odds with goals for sustainable production and consumption. I want to research to what degree the concept of permacomputing can be broadened and applied to critically revised, sustainable ways of making computing part of art and design education and professional practice. This research will be embedded in the design curriculum of Willem de Kooning Academy, focused on redefining the role of artists and designers to contribute to future modes of sustainable organisation and production. It is aligned with Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences sectorplan masters VH, in particular managing and directing sustainable transitions. This research builds upon twenty years of experience in the creative industries. It is an attempt to generalise, consolidate, and structure methods and practices for sustainable art and design production experimented with while I was course director of a master programme at WdKA.
