from the repository of Utrecht University: "PURPOSE: Previously, a high prevalence of certain psychiatric disorders was shown among non-Western immigrants. This study explores whether this results in more prescriptions for psychotropic medication. METHODS: Data on dispensing of medication among adults living in the four largest Dutch cities in 2013 were linked to demographic data from Statistics Netherlands. Incident (i.e., following no dispensing in 2010-2012) and prevalent dispensing among immigrants was compared to that among native Dutch (N = 1,043,732) and analyzed using multivariable Poisson and logistic regression. RESULTS: High adjusted Odds Ratios (ORadj) of prevalent and high Incidence Rate Ratios (IRRadj) of incident dispensing of antipsychotics were found among Moroccan (N = 115,455) and Turkish individuals (N = 105,460), especially among young Moroccan males (ORadj = 3.22 [2.99-3.47]). Among Surinamese (N = 147,123) and Antillean individuals (N = 41,430), slightly higher rates of dispensed antipsychotics were found and the estimates decreased after adjustment. The estimates for antipsychotic dispensing among the Moroccan and Turkish increased, following adjustment for household composition. Rates for antidepressant dispensing among Turkish and Moroccan subjects were high (Moroccans: ORadj = 1.74 [1.70-1.78]). Among Surinamese and Antillean subjects, the rates for antidepressant dispensing were low and the ORadjlagged behind the IRRadj(Surinamese: 0.69 [0.67-0.71] vs. 1.06 [1.00-1.13]). Similar results were found for anxiolytics. For ADHD medication, lower dispensing rates were found among all migrant groups. CONCLUSIONS: The findings agree with earlier reports of more mental health problems among Moroccan and Turkish individuals. Surinamese/Antillean individuals did not use psychotropic drugs at excess and discontinued antidepressants and anxiolytics earlier. The data strongly suggest under-treatment for ADHD in all ethnic minority groups."

13-06-2017Nieuwe wetgeving voor jeugdzorg in Nederland heeft geleid tot de implementatie van teams, die geïntegreerde eerstelijns jeugdzorg bieden. Belangrijke doelen van de nieuwe Jeugdwet waren meer geïntegreerde, tijdige zorg en minder gebruik van intensieve vormen van zorg. Het doel van dit onderzoek was het bestuderen van veranderingen in het gebruik van jeugdzorg in de tijd en de rol van nieuw ingevoerde wijkgerichte ondersteuningsteams hierin. Patronen van jeugdzorggebruik veranderden naar meer lokaal geleverde primaire jeugdzorg, iets minder gespecialiseerde en iets meer residentiële jeugdzorg. Bovendien nam het jeugdzorggebruik onder jongere kinderen toe in de tijd. Deze trends komen deels overeen met de trends die de Jeugdwet beoogt. Er is weinig bewijs gevonden voor de rol van specifieke teamkenmerken op veranderingen in jeugdzorggebruik in de tijd.

15-02-2022In this article, the preservation of the monumental built environment from the colonial period is related to and discussed within the perspective of heritage ownership. It contributes to a debate in which heritage resource preservation is approached and connected to several heritage ownership issues. It argues that an effective built environmental preservation policy for colonial heritage is strongly related to and dependent on issues such as legal property ownership, legislation on listed buildings, enforcement of such legislation, and the willingness among different categories of potential owners to participate and support such preservation. Especially, when it comes to built colonial heritage as an imported alien resource from a colonial past, these issues are particularly interesting and sensitive. A good illustration of these issues is the case of Paramaribo, Suriname. The national government policy following the inscription of the historic inner city of Paramaribo on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 2002 clearly demonstrates an area of tension and difficulty between and within the interested parties. It shows that monumental preservation and heritage management and interpretation are strongly affected and determined by concepts such as ownership, affinity, interest, economic priorities, and political will. By referring to the actual problems encountered in the preservation efforts relating to the built colonial heritage in Paramaribo and subsequently explaining these problems in relation to specific ownership issues, this article throws light on a number of dilemmas. Conclusions are drawn widening the argument and contributing to the ongoing debate on heritage ownership issues and monument preservation policies especially as it relates to the global issue of managing the relics of now defunct empires. In recent years an increasing interest can be detected in issues concerning the legal property ownership of heritage. This growth in interest focuses in particular on the legislation in relationship to property ownership issues. An important aim of national governments is to use legislation to safeguard their cultural property by embedding it in law, especially, when this cultural property has a high monetary or identity value (as stressed by Fechner, 1998). Additionally, the growing awareness and recognition of heritage as a valuable economic, sociopsychological and environmental asset is receiving increasing international attention. For example, the international acknowledgment that heritage resources are under pressure from all kinds of processes and impacts has encouraged the need for an extension of international legal measures. Consequently, this international interest, often expressed in conventions, charters, and treaties, encourages national and local initiatives (Techera, 2011). An interesting complication to this issue is the question that arises where it involves the monumental built environment from the colonial period that is being preserved and restored, as it may be viewed as a heritage based on alien resources. In particular the acceptance, recognition, and role of what may be viewed as an imported colonial built environment in a multicultural and multiethnic context, may impact effective legislation. Although the discussion about the roles of heritage within a plural cultural and ethnic society has already begun (recently emphasized by Van Maanen, 2011; Ashworth, Graham, & Tunbridge, 2007), it is still an underresearched topic when it comes to legal property ownership as part of a management strategy for preserving built colonial heritage resources. This article examines in particular the effectiveness of policies and laws pursued in Suriname as an instrument for the preservation of resources. It highlights the legal and administrative challenges facing the implementation, management, and enforcement of these strategies and measures. The first part of this article examines the debate about the approach and strategy in using law in conservation and preservation policies. Then the article proceeds to introduce Suriname as an instructive case study. It describes the existing multiethnic context of Suriname and the evolution of legislative policy for the historic inner city of the capital, Paramaribo, with its monumental built environment from the colonial period. By using field data, the article continues with an analysis of the effectiveness and impacts of this administrative and legal framework established in Suriname. It examines in detail the main problems encountered and the extent to which this strategy is supported by the key stakeholders.
Ontbossing vormt wereldwijd een bedreiging voor het klimaat en biodiversiteit. In tropische landen is ontbossing ook een bedreiging voor lokale gemeenschappen die in het bos leven en afhankelijk zijn van de goederen en diensten die het bos hun levert. De jaarlijkse ontbossing in tropische bosgebieden is weliswaar de afgelopen jaren wat afgenomen maar in het (Braziliaanse) Amazone gebied is de afgelopen 5 jaar de ontbossing juist weer toegenomen. Het doel van dit project is om nieuwe kennis te generen en die toe te passen bij het duurzaam gebruik van het bos in Suriname, hetgeen als voorbeeld kan dienen voor aangrenzende landen die deel uitmaken van het Amazone gebied. Daarnaast zal er onderzocht worden hoe het bosbestuur verbeterd kan worden, en zullen nieuwe methoden ontwikkeld worden om de duurzaamheid van activiteiten in het bos te kunnen monitoren. De doorwerking naar de praktijk gebeurt in nauwe samenwerking met verschillende (private) partijen waarbij concrete verdien-modellen voor het gebruik van goederen en diensten uit het bos ontwikkeld worden. Via een op te zetten Living Lab Duurzaam Bosgebruik worden professionals uitgenodigd om door middel van trainingen, workshops en andere bijeenkomsten de kennis in de beroepspraktijk toe te passen. Het project draagt bij aan de actualisering van het onderwijs door deze nieuwe kennis te gebruiken in de curricula van zowel Surinaamse als Nederlandse beroepsopleidingen op het gebied van duurzaam gebruik van natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Door deze aanpak wordt het handelingsperspectief van zowel lokale gemeenschappen als commerciële bedrijven vergroot zodat zij beter in staat zijn duurzamere verdienmodellen te creëren gebaseerd op het gebruik van producten en diensten uit het Surinaamse bos.
