The aim of this exploratory study is to develop a definition of conceptual understanding for teaching in international business. In international business, professionals face complex problems like what to produce, where to manufacture, which markets to target, and when to expand abroad. A clear definition of conceptual understanding needed to solve such problems would provide design input for international business education. In three cycles, two independent expert panels with backgrounds in academic research, international business education, and international business practice identified and validated key components of conceptual understanding in international business. Key components are the global and local contexts, general and specific business practices, and theoretical business concepts and mechanisms. Other key characteristics include factual knowledge, explanation, and out-of-the-box thinking.

Phd Thesis Higher professional education aims to prepare graduates for the complexity of professional practices. The development of conceptual understanding is important to deal adequately with this complexity, especially in an unstructured professional domain such as international business. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the concept conceptual understanding in this professional domain, how it can be measured, what it looks like, how it changes, and in what ways it differs between students. The dissertation comprises five empirical studies for which data collection took place at a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands.

World globalisation drives companies to undertake international expansion with the aim of retaining or growing their businesses. When companies globalize, managers encounter new challenges in making international marketing strategy (IMS) decisions, which are influenced by perceived cultural and business distance between their home- and foreign country. Telkom Indonesia International (Telin) was formed by Telkom Indonesia (i.e. the state-owned company in the telecommunication industry in Indonesia) to engage in international business within a global market. The central question in this study is to what extent do managers’ perceived cultural and business distance between home- and foreign country influence their IMS decisions? A mixed research strategy will be employed by applying qualitative and quantitative methods concurrently. The data collection will involve interviews with CEOs and managers, alongside a web survey to 55 managers of Telkom's. Results suggest important consequences for IMS decisions and emphasizes the need for dialogue on perceptions of cultural and business characteristics of countries.

Nowadays companies need higher educated engineers to develop their competences to enable them to innovate. This innovation competence is seen as a remedy for the minor profitable business they do during the financial crises. Innovation is an element to be developed on the one hand for big companies as well as for small-and-medium sized companies through Europe to overcome this crisis. The higher education can be seen as an institution where youngsters, coming from secondary schools, who choose to learn at higher education to realize their dream, what they like to become in the professional world. The tasks of the Universities of applied Sciences are to prepare these youngsters to become starting engineers doing their job well in the companies. Companies work for a market, trying to manufacture products which customers are willing to pay for. They ask competent employees helping achieving this goal. It is important these companies inform the Universities of applied Sciences in order to modify their educational program in such a way that the graduated engineers are learning the latest knowledge and techniques, which they need to know doing their job well. The Universities of applied Sciences of Oulu (Finland) and Fontys Eindhoven (The Netherlands) are working together to experience possibilities to qualify their students on innovation development in an international setting. In the so-called: ‘Invention Project’, students are motivated to find their own invention, to design it, to prepare this idea for prototyping and to really manufacture it. Organizing the project, special attention is given to communication protocol between students and also between teachers. Students have meetings on Thursday every week through Internet connection with the communication program OPTIMA, which is provided by the Oulu University. Not only the time difference between Finland and the Netherlands is an issue to be organized also effective protocols how to provide each other relevant information and also how to make in an effective way decisions are issues. In the paper the writers will present opinions of students, teachers and also companies in both regions of Oulu and Eindhoven on the effectiveness of this project reaching the goal students get more experienced to set up innovative projects in an international setting. The writers think this is an important and needed competence for nowadays young engineers to be able to create lucrative inventions for companies where they are going to work for. In the paper the writers also present the experiences of the supervising conditions during the project. The information found will lead to success-factors and do’s and don’ts for future projects with international collaboration.

Bachelor-studenten van de Hotel Management School Maastricht beginnen hun opleiding Hoger Hotelonderwijs met een semester Hotel Orientation. De module Hotel Orientation was ten tijde van het onderzoek opgebouwd uit blokken van drie weken waarin studenten zich theoretisch oriënteren en gedurende steeds een week praktijkervaring opdoen in Teaching Hotel Château Bethlehem. Zodoende maken zij kennis met alle afdelingen van het Teaching Hotel: de keuken, het restaurant, housekeeping, services en de receptie. De opleiders zien dat de praktijkweken voor de studenten een rijke leerervaring opleveren en willen meer inzicht krijgen in de leeropbrengsten om deze te kunnen benutten in het curriculum van de module en van de opleiding. Aan het Lectoraat Professionalisering van het Onderwijs is gevraagd onderzoek te doen voor afstemming van het curriculum op de leerervaringen in het Teaching Hotel. Aan de hand van een vooronderzoek, samen met medewerkers en studenten van de Hotel Management School hebben de onderzoekers de onderzoeksvraag geformuleerd: Welke perceptie hebben studenten van wat ze leren in Teaching Hotel Chateau Bethlehem? Er is voor gekozen om studenten aan de hand van drie thema’s te interviewen: leeropbrengsten uit de leeromgeving, uit de begeleiding en persoonlijke leeropbrengsten. In totaal zijn 19 interviews met studenten gehouden waarbij de interviewdata uiteindelijk zijn ingedeeld in twaalf leeropbrengsten, zoals operationele vaardigheden, visie op de bedrijfscultuur, teamwerk, rol van de begeleiders, verantwoordelijkheid nemen, professioneel zelfvertrouwen, socialisatie en leermotivatie. Voor deze leeropbrengsten is op basis van de uitspraken van studenten een beschrijvende definitie geformuleerd. De onderzoekers hebben de beschrijvingen van de leeropbrengsten met een overzicht van de deelaspecten en enkele citaten van studenten gepresenteerd in een werkconferentie met medewerkers die in de opleiding verantwoordelijk zijn voor het curriculum: het management van het Teaching Hotel, de Werkgroep Praktijkleren, de Curriculum Commissie en de Directeur. De deelnemers aan de conferentie waren blij verrast door de hoeveelheid leeropbrengsten en de positieve waardering van studenten voor de praktijkweken in het Teaching Hotel. De aanwezigen in de werkconferentie stelden vast dat het onderzoek hun signalen bevestigt en helpt om deze collectief bespreekbaar te maken. Het onderzoek laat zien dat het Teaching Hotel een belangrijke bijdrage levert aan de opleiding van eerstejaars studenten. De onderzoeksbevindingen hebben ertoe geleid dat de Werkgroep Praktijkleren de opdracht heeft gekregen om voorstellen voor het beter benutten van de leeropbrengsten te ontwikkelen.

We developed and tested a teaching case and teaching note on the challenges that a small sustainable fashion brand faces when implementing a circular business model. We target bachelor and master students of international business, entrepreneurship, strategic management, circularity/sustainability courses. This teaching case challenges students to think about how circular business models can contribute to sustainability and highlights opportunities and barriers to adopting circular strategies. The case is based on publicly available sources and interviews with sustainable fashion brand Kuyichi. The main learning objectives for students are: 1) to understand the concept of circular economy (CE) and how circular business models differ from linear business models; 2) demonstrate in what way circular business models can contribute to sustainability; 3) evaluate rental and/or resale business models and the challenges and opportunities involved; 4) make recommendations on adopting circular strategies or business models that support the transition to a circular economy. The teaching note highlights academic and practitioner literature, such as circular business models (Bocken et al., 2016; Circle Economy, 2021; Lüdeke-Freund, Gold, Bocken, 2019), strategies (Konietzko et al., 2020), transition theory (Geels, 2002; Nambisan and Baron, 2013), organizational inertia (Sydow et al., 2009) and dynamic capabilities (O’Reilly and Tushman, 2004; Teece et al., 1997), and makes suggestions for classroom discussion and assignments. The teaching case and note will be published as a free case with The Case Centre. The main question in this PhD thesis is: How can Business Rules Management be configured and valued in organizations? A BRM problem space framework is proposed, existing of service systems, as a solution to the BRM problems. In total 94 vendor documents and approximately 32 hours of semi-structured interviews were analyzed. This analysis revealed nine individual service systems, in casu elicitation, design, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitor, audit, and version. In the second part of this dissertation, BRM is positioned in relation to BPM (Business Process Management) by means of a literature study. An extension study was conducted: a qualitative study on a list of business rules formulated by a consulting organization based on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission risk framework. Whereas different aspects of teaching and learning in Higher Education are often discussed within an academic community, teaching the EU seems to receive less attention. Especially in recent years we testimony the decreasing interest to EU studies in universities, including some signs of disappearing from educational curricula. Even more sad is the state of teaching the EU in economic faculties and other disciplinary areas. Teaching the EU is not always considered as an important and necessary part of these curricula. At the same time, in the still remaining studies of the EU, mainly situated in studies of politics or international relations, there is a tendency, with a few exemptions, to stick to a rather traditional approach of teaching the EU that does not change for years, no matter what the developments in the world are. In this paper I plea for the change of the existent paradigm in teaching the EU. The new global realities, such as a developing climate crisis and EU green economic transition, war in Europe and changing global security landscape, (still) continuing migration crisis and growing poverty worldwide, radicalization of political systems and intensifying populism, require to change the way the EU subject has been taught in universities. The scholars teaching the EU subject have to rethink the existent answers to the main educational questions, such as what, why, how and who is being taught about the EU. I propose a different approach to teaching the EU that not only redesigns the existent teaching practices of the EU, but also makes the introduction of EU studies in other than political science or international relations curricula, such as economic, business, environmental or many other interdisciplinary studies, possible and indispensable.
