Het accent binnen het hoger beroeps onderwijs heeft de laatste decennia gelegen op het begeleiden van de zwakkere studenten naar het niveau van beginnend beroepsbeoefenaar. De aandacht voor het uitdagen van de betere studenten is daarbij naar de achtergrond verschoven. Het gevolg is dat 37% van de studenten onvoldoende uitdaging vindt in het aangeboden onderwijs (Plasterk, 2007). Om gemotiveerde en getalenteerde studenten meer uit te dagen is op de Faculteit Gezondheidszorg van de Hogeschool Utrecht een Top Class programma ontwikkeld. Studenten krijgen in dit programma de mogelijkheid te excelleren, door middel van het doen van extra inspanningen. Dit programma is in zijn oorspronkelijke vorm vier jaar geleden van start gegaan. De resultaten van de evaluatie van het oude Top Class programma vormden de aanleiding om het programma te herzien. De methode die voor het herzien van het programma werd gebruikt is eerder beschreven in O&G (Coppoolse, 2009). Het afgelopen jaar is veel geïnvesteerd in de aanpassing van het programma en voorlichting aan studenten, docenten en management over het programma. Het nieuwe Top Class programma is onlangs van start gegaan. In het eerste gedeelte van dit artikel wordt het programma gepresenteerd. Vervolgens worden de eerste ervaringen met dit nieuwe programma weergegeven. Tenslotte wordt op basis van de eerste ervaringen geschetst wat vervolgactiviteiten zijn om studenten te faciliteren hun talent in te zetten bij hun verdere ontwikkeling.

Er waait een nieuwe wind door het hoger onderwijs: studenten worden uitgedaagd hun talent te ontdekken en in te zetten om te komen tot bovengemiddelde prestaties. Een van de impulsen is de Topclass, een van de activiteiten uit het introductieprogramma daarvan is het TalentEvent. Het doel van ons onderzoek is om te analyseren of het TalentEvent bijdraagt aan het inzichtelijk krijgen van de talenten van de individuele student.

Breedtesport en topsport ontwikkelen zich in een verschillende richting, maar blijven elkaar beinvloeden. Deze beinvloeding kan worden onderscheiden naar effecten die samenhangen met de veronderstelde aanvoerfunctie van de breedtesport en effecten die voortkomen uit de veronderstelde aanjaagfunctie van de topsport. Beide functies maken onderdeel uit van de zogenoemde 'double pyramid theory'. Volgens deze theorie brengen duizenden sportbeoefenaars een paar Olympische kampioenen voort (aanvoerfunctie), terwijl deze kampioenen door hun rolmodel weer duizenden mensen stimuleren om één of andere vorm van sport te gaan beoefenen (aanjaagfunctie). Onderzoek wijst echter uit dat er geen sprake is van een gelijke mate van beïnvloeding tussen topsport en breedtesport. De topsport kan niet zonder breedtesport, maar andersom is dit in veel mindere mate het geval. Breedtesporters ontlenen vooral als publiek veel plezier aan de topsport, maar een groot deel van de sportbeoefenaars, vooral buiten verenigingsverband, zal in hun sportbeoefening nauwelijks een relatie met de topsport ervaren.

The present study focuses on the level of stress male and female teachers perceive when dealing with the most behaviorally challenging student in his or her classroom. To measure stress in Dutch elementary classrooms, a sample was drawn of 582 teachers. First, they rated the most challenging student in their classroom on six different behavioral components: Against the grain, Full of activity/Easily distractible, Needs a lot of attention/Week student, Easily upset, Failuresyndrome/Excessively perfectionist, and Aggressive/Hostile. Teachers then scored perceived stress as a result of this challenging behavior. Two questions concerning gender relations in class rooms will be addressed. Do female and male teachers select the same type of behaviorally challenging students as the most challenging? And: do they perceive the same level of stress? Our data shows that female teachers do indeed report significantly more incidence of challenging behavior, but no evidence is found for differences between stress levels of male and female teachers.

BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention guidelines stress the importance of smoking cessation and recommend intensive follow-up. To guide the development of such cessation support strategies, we analysed the characteristics that are associated with successful smoking cessation after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS).MethodsWe used data from the Randomised Evaluation of Secondary Prevention for ACS patients coordinated by Outpatient Nurse SpEcialists (RESPONSE) trial (n = 754). This was designed to quantify the impact of a nurse-coordinated prevention program, focusing on healthy lifestyles, traditional CVD risk factors and medication adherence. For the current analysis we included all smokers (324/754, 43 %). Successful quitters were defined as those who reported abstinence at 1 year of follow-up.ResultsThe majority of successful quitters quit immediately after the ACS event and remained abstinent through 1 year of follow-up, without extra support (128/156, 82 %). Higher education level (33 vs. 15 %, p < 0.01), no history of CVD (87 vs. 74 %, p < 0.01) and being on target for LDL-cholesterol level at 1 year (78 vs. 63 %, p < 0.01) were associated with successful quitting.ConclusionThe majority of successful quitters at 1 year stopped immediately after their ACS. Patients in this group showed that it was within their own ability to quit, and they did not relapse through 1 year of follow-up. Our study indicates that in a large group of patients who quit immediately after a life-threatening event, no relapse prevention program is needed.

The increasing rate of urbanization along with its socio-environmental impact are major global challenges. Therefore, there is a need to assess the boundaries to growth for the future development of cities by the inclusion of the assessment of the environmental carrying capacity (ECC) into spatial management. The purpose is to assess the resource dependence of a given entity. ECC is usually assessed based on indicators such as the ecological footprint (EF) and biocapacity (BC). EF is a measure of the biologically productive areas demanded by human consumption and waste production. Such areas include the space needed for regenerating food and fibers as well as sequestering the generated pollution, particularly CO2 from the combustion of fossil fuels. BC reflects the biological regeneration potential of a given area to regenerate resources as well to absorb waste. The city level EF assessment has been applied to urban zones across the world, however, there is a noticeable lack of urban EF assessments in Central Eastern Europe. Therefore, the current research is a first estimate of the EF and BC for the city of Wrocław, Poland. This study estimates the Ecological Footprint of Food (EFF) through both a top-down assessment and a hybrid top-down/bottom-up assessment. Thus, this research verifies also if results from hybrid method could be comparable with top-down approach. The bottom-up component of the hybrid analysis calculated the carbon footprint of food using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The top-down result ofWrocław’s EFF were 1% greater than the hybrid EFF result, 0.974 and 0.963 gha per person respectively. The result indicated that the EFF exceeded the BC of the city of Wrocław 10-fold. Such assessment support efforts to increase resource efficiency and decrease the risk associated with resources—including food security. Therefore, there is a need to verify if a city is able to satisfy the resource needs of its inhabitants while maintaining the natural capital on which they depend intact. In this article, the author will question the seemingly obvious boundary between civil disobedience, as conceptualised by Rawls and Arendt, and several examples of criminal, or simply annoying, activities which don't meet their criteria, such as the case of the ‘Top 50'. The ‘Top 50' are multi-problem Dutch-Caribbean men, who refuse to adapt to predominant norms in Dutch society. IThe author argues that political aspects of their behaviour should be acknowledged, even if they engage in criminal behaviour and don't present explicit political goals. Firstly, she questions the way in which Rawls based his definition on a centralistic conception of governmental power and contrast it with Foucault's conception of normalising power, in which power is diffuse and cannot be restricted to the enactment of formal laws. Secondly, she discusses what the minimum requirements are to be able to classifyacts as civil disobedience. Rawls and Arendt draw a clear line between criminal behaviour and civil disobedience, but their requirements may be too strict. We might miss signals of injustice if actions that do not meet these criteria are excluded from the political discourse. The conclusion is that comparing Arendt's and Rawls' conception of civil disobedience with the behaviour of a marginal migrant group may be useful in questioning the boundaries of this concept and in making it more inclusive. A wider conception of civil disobedience may help to explain the meaning of deviant behaviour in terms of social critique and to challenge the traditional understanding of civil disobedience.

Introduction: To determine if athletes with coordination impairment (CI) can continue playing wheelchair rugby (WR), while an evidence-based classification system, including impairment tests for CI is not yet available. This is a defensible practise if they show similar activity limitations as athletes with other eligible impairment types (OI) within the same sports class. Methods: Standardised activities were measured in 58 elite WR athletes; 14 with CI and 44 with OI. Wheelchair activities consisted of 20-meter sprint, 12-meter sprint with full stop, intermittent sprint (3-meter sprint, stop, 3-meter sprint, stop, 6-meter sprint with full stop), sprint-curve-slalom-curve, turn on the spot 180°, turn on the spot 90°, stop, turn 90°in the same direction, X-test (short circuit with sharp turns) without the ball. Ball activities consisted of maximal throwing distance, precision throwing short (25% of maximum throw) and long (75% of maximal throw) distance and X-test with the ball (pick-up the ball and dribble whilst pushing). Descriptive statistics were used and Spearman’s Rank correlation was assessed for athletes with CI and OI for each outcome measure. Differences between athletes with CI and OI were assessed using a Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Most activities showed a high correlation with the athlete class in both athletes with CI and athletes with OI. Furthermore, outcome measures of athletes with CI overlapped with athletes with OI in the same sports class for all activities. There was a trend for worse performance in athletes with CI in turn on the spot 90°, stop, turn 90°in the same direction, the short distance one handed precision throw (P 0.11)and in the X-test with the ball (P 0.10). Discussion: Despite the current lack of evidence based impairment tests for CI, it is a defensible practise to not exclude athletes with CI from WR with the current classification system. The trends for differences in performance that were found can support athletes and coaches in optimising performance of athletes with CI.
