The aim of this QSR 2022 on tourism is to make an attempt to assess available information about the tourism industry from three countries and various sources and present it in a comprehensive manner. We, thereby, describe common features of regional tourism structures, as well as differences, and we present some of the identified data incompatibilities (sections 2.2 and 2.3). The recommendations in section 3 present avenues along which data collection and monitoring can be improved, inspired by a set of key forces driving change intourism that stakeholders should be prepared for (section 2.4).

This paper examines how a serious game approach could support a participatory planning process by bringing stakeholders together to discuss interventions that assist the development of sustainable urban tourism. A serious policy game was designed and played in six European cities by a total of 73 participants, reflecting a diverse array of tourism stakeholders. By observing in-game experiences, a pre- and post -game survey and short interviews six months after playing the game, the process and impact of the game was investigated. While it proved difficult to evaluate the value of a serious game approach, results demonstrate that enacting real-life policymaking in a serious game setting can enable stakeholders to come together, and become more aware of the issues and complexities involved with urban tourism planning. This suggests a serious game can be used to stimulate the uptake of academic insights in a playful manner. However, it should be remembered that a game is a tool and does not, in itself, lead to inclusive participatory policymaking and more sustainable urban tourism planning. Consequently, care needs to be taken to ensure inclusiveness and prevent marginalization or disempowerment both within game-design and the political formation of a wider participatory planning approach.

· As a platform for interdisciplinary applied research in the community setting, the living lab model offers a unique environment for the imagination of tourism interventions that can recast the activity as a force for good. Mandating a quadruple helix ecosystem, living labs encourage participation of a wide group of stakeholders, as a conduit for situated knowledge collected through deep engagement with a local context. An inherent feature of the living lab is that it is place-based, which is important for generating impactful solutions for sustainable tourism. This chapter describes a case study in the Netherlands, where the world's first tourism living labs were founded in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. This contribution informs on how the Urban Leisure and Tourism labs have cultivated an environment for open innovation and impactful collaboration, where students are seen as key partners in building an ecosystem from the ground up. It offers high-level descriptions of the route to growing a suitable learning environment with public, private and community sector partners – and emphasises the importance of joint problematisation and readying a fertile ground for experimentation. The chapter shares opportunities and challenges from the embryonic, early years of the labs, and showcases some of the most impactful ideas and outputs with transformative potential, such as the BMX-routes Zuidpleinen and the Inclusive Welcome Path. It reports on overarching themes for research, including how to embed a regenerative design perspective – in order to bring about social innovation in urban tourism. Sharing critical reflections from the lived experience of leading living lab research, it reports on the complexity of collaborative design, and the difficulties of embracing uncertainty and ambiguity in education and practice. Concrete reflections on what makes or breaks an intervention are shared at the end of the chapter, and touch upon the importance of holding space, continual fresh ideas, long-term presence and frequent feedback loops. The impacts of tourism on destinations and the perceptions of local communities have been a major concern both for the industry and research in the past decades. However, tourism planning has been mainly focused on traditions that promote the increase of tourism without taking under consideration the wellbeing of both residents and visitors. To develop a more sustainable tourism model, the inclusion of local residents in tourism decision-making is vital. However, this is not always possible due to structural, economic and socio-cultural restrictions that residents face resulting to their disempowerment. This study aims to explore and interpret the formal processes around tourism decision-making and community empowerment in urban settings. The research proposes a comparative study of three urban destinations in Europe (The Hague in the Netherlands, San Sebastian in Spain and, Ioannina in Greece) that experience similar degree of tourism growth. The proposed study will use a design-based approach in order to understand tourism decision-making and what empowers or disempowers community participation within the destinations. Based on the findings of primary and secondary data, a community empowerment model will be applied in one the destinations as a pilot for resident engagement in tourism planning. The evaluation of the pilot will allow for an optimized model to be created with implications for tourism planning at a local level that can contribute to sustainable destinations that safeguard the interests of local residents and tourists.
Since March 2013, Paul Peeters is a member of the ICAO/CAEP Working Group 3, which is responsible for setting a new fuel efficiency standard for of civil aviation. He does so for the International Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA). ICSA was established in 1998 by a group of national and international environmental NGOs as official observers. Since its inception, ICSA has contributed to CAEP’s work on technical means to reduce emissions and noise, the role of market-based measures, supporting economic and environmental analysis, modelling and forecasting, and ICAO’s carbon calculator. It has also been invited to present its views at ICAO workshops on carbon markets and bio-fuels, and has presented to the high-level Group on Internation Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC). ICSA uses the expertise within its NGO membership to formulate its co-ordinated positions. To gain the broadest level of understanding and input from environmental NGOs, ICSA communicates with, and invites comment from, other NGO networks and bodies working in related areas. ICSA’s participation in ICAO and CAEP meetings is currently provided by the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF), the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Transport and Environment (T&E). The FlexEd project is intended as an extension of the Leisure Choices and Wellbeing (LCW) project which is now very concretely and definitively planned to run from November 2024 through January 2026. The LCW project is facilitated by the Academy for Leisure. The Leisure Choices and Wellbeing, The LCW project will use a weekly longitudinal questionnaire of 200 individuals (final sample after attrition) over 40 weeks to measure leisure activity planning, participation, and wellbeing. The three main aims of the project are to uncover the roles of 1) social interaction during leisure, 2) novelty/change in routine during leisure, and 3) leisure travel duration and frequency, in explaining individuals’ and families’ wellbeing. By measuring changes in these leisure activities week to week, it will be possible to uncover how development in leisure choices accrues to improved well-being over time.
