OBJECTIVE: Osteopenia is a common complication of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). In adults, low bone density and increased fracture risk are associated with low vitamin K status of bone. The vitamin K-dependent protein osteocalcin plays an important role in bone metabolism. Its activity depends upon post-translational carboxylation in which vitamin K is an essential co-factor. Hence, vitamin K deficiency leads to under-carboxylated (i.e., inactive) osteocalcin (ucOC). Little is known about the vitamin K status and bone health in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We studied the vitamin K status of bone and its association with bone mass properties in children with JIA compared to healthy children.METHODS: We performed a cross sectional study in 55 children with JIA and 54 healthy controls between 6-18 years of age. Bone markers, ultrasound bone mass properties and vitamin K status of bone were determined.RESULTS: Overall, no differences in vitamin K status of bone were found between the study groups. Among children with JIA, a high ratio of ucOC/cOC indicating low vitamin K status was associated with low bone ultrasound parameters, whereas children with a high vitamin K status had markedly higher bone properties. This association was independent of physical activity, age, gender and BMI.CONCLUSION: These results suggest that vitamin K may be one of multiple risk factors for low bone mass in children with JIA, in addition to other recognized determinants of bone mass. The question remains whether JIA patients would benefit from increased dietary vitamin K intake.

Background: A chronic low-grade infammatory profle (CLIP) is associated with sarcopenia in older adults. Protein and Vitamin (Vit)D have immune-modulatory potential, but evidence for efects of nutritional supplementation on CLIP is limited. Aim To investigate whether 13 weeks of nutritional supplementation of VitD and leucine-enriched whey protein afected CLIP in subjects enrolled in the PROVIDE-study, as a secondary analysis. Methods: Sarcopenic adults (low skeletal muscle mass) aged ≥ 65 years with mobility limitations (Short Physical Performance Battery 4–9) and a body mass index of 20–30 kg/m2 were randomly allocated to two daily servings of active (n=137, including 20 g of whey protein, 3 g of leucine and 800 IU VitD) or isocaloric control product (n=151) for a double-blind period of 13 weeks. At baseline and after 13 weeks, circulating interleukin (IL)-8, IL-1 receptor antagonist (RA), soluble tumor-necrosis-factor receptor (sTNFR)1, IL-6, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, pre-albumin and 25-hydroxyvitamin(OH) D were measured. Data-analysis included repeated measures analysis of covariance (corrected for dietary VitD intake) and linear regression. Results: IL-6 and IL-1Ra serum levels showed overall increases after 13 weeks (p=0.006 and p<0.001, respectively). For IL-6 a signifcant time × treatment interaction (p=0.046) was observed, with no signifcant change over time in the active group (p=0.155) compared to control (signifcant increase p=0.012). IL-8 showed an overall signifcant decrease (p=0.03). The change in pre-albumin was a signifcant predictor for changes in IL-6 after 13 weeks. Conclusions: We conclude that 13 weeks of nutritional supplementation with VitD and leucine-enriched whey protein may attenuate the progression of CLIP in older sarcopenic persons with mobility limitations

BackgroundIncreased physical activity and dietary protein intake are promising interventions to prevent or treat the age-related decline in physical performance in older adults. There are well-controlled exercise as well as dietary intervention studies that show beneficial effects on physical performance in older adults. In practice, however, weekly group based exercise or nutritional programs may not be as effective. To optimise these exercise programs for community dwelling older adults, a digitally supported and personalised home-based exercise training program has been designed aiming to improve physical performance in older adults. In addition, a protein intervention in combination with the training program may further improve physical performance in older adults.MethodsThe VITAMIN study will be a cluster randomised controlled trial with three parallel arms. In total, 240 community dwelling older adults (≥ 55 years) participating in weekly group exercise are randomly allocated into: 1) regular weekly exercise program (Control group, n = 80), 2) digitally supported personalised home-based exercise training program group (VITA group, n = 80) and 3) digitally supported personalised home-based exercise training program group plus dietary protein counselling (VITA-Pro group, n = 80). The VITAMIN study aims to evaluate effectiveness of the digitally supported personalised home-based exercise training program as well as the additional value of dietary protein on physical performance after 6 months. In addition, a 12 month follow-up measurement will assess the retaining effect of the interventions. Primary outcome is physical performance measured by the Modified Physical Performance Test (M-PPT) and relevant secondary and observational outcomes include habitual physical activity and dietary intake, body composition, cognitive performance, quality of life, compliance and tablet usage. Data will be analysed by Linear Mixed Models.DiscussionTo our knowledge, the VITAMIN study is the first study that investigates the impact of home-based exercise, protein intake as well as use of persuasive technology in the population of community dwelling older adults.Trial registrationNL56094.029.16 / NTR (TC = 5888; registered 03–06-2016).

The seaweed aquaculture sector, aimed at cultivation of macroalgal biomass to be converted into commercial applications, can be placed within a sustainable and circular economy framework. This bio-based sector has the potential to aid the European Union meet multiple EU Bioeconomy Strategy, EU Green Deal and Blue Growth Strategy objectives. Seaweeds play a crucial ecological role within the marine environment and provide several ecosystem services, from the take up of excess nutrients from surrounding seawater to oxygen production and potentially carbon sequestration. Sea lettuce, Ulva spp., is a green seaweed, growing wild in the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea. Sea lettuce has a high nutritional value and is a promising source for food, animal feed, cosmetics and more. Sea lettuce, when produced in controlled conditions like aquaculture, can supplement our diet with healthy and safe proteins, fibres and vitamins. However, at this moment, Sea lettuce is hardly exploited as resource because of its unfamiliarity but also lack of knowledge about its growth cycle, its interaction with microbiota and eventually, possible applications. Even, it is unknown which Ulva species are available for aquaculture (algaculture) and how these species can contribute to a sustainable aquaculture biomass production. The AQULVA project aims to investigate which Ulva species are available in the North Sea and Wadden Sea which can be utilised in onshore aquaculture production. Modern genomic, microbiomic and metabolomic profiling techniques alongside ecophysiological production research must reveal suitable Ulva selections with high nutritional value for sustainable onshore biomass production. Selected Ulva spp lines will be used for production of healthy and safe foods, anti-aging cosmetics and added value animal feed supplements for dairy farming. This applied research is in cooperation with a network of SME’s, Research Institutes and Universities of Applied Science and is liaised with EU initiatives like the EU-COST action “SeaWheat”.
Cupplement; Koffie voor sporters. Een dagelijks kopje verrijkt in vitamines kan sporters helpen om te voorzien in de extra behoefte van deze vitamines. Uit HU onderzoek blijkt dat koffie uit cups in principe kunnen worden verrijkt met vitamines. In dit project voorstel zullen de volgende vervolg activiteiten worden verricht, namelijk: • Analyse van de beschikbaarheid van vitamines in koffie namelijk; o wateroplosbare vitamines, (andere vitBs). o vetoplosbare vitamines (vitD). • Kwaliteit en shelf life testen. • Smaakoptimalisatie na verrijking. Het uiteindelijk resultaat zal zijn, een koffie blend in cups verrijkt met vit B en D waarvan de smaak is geoptimaliseerd.
De LTO heeft aangekaart wat het belang van licht is voor het welzijn van paarden. Zowel de lichtsterkte, als de kleur en de lichtduur hebben effect op het welzijn van het paard. Licht is noodzakelijk voor een goede gezondheid en zorgt voor het aanmaken van vitaminen en het aansturen van de voortplantingscyclus. Ook de Federatie van Nederlandse Ruitersportcentra (FNRS) heeft recent (april jl.) geschreven over het belang van natuurlijk daglicht. Ledverlichting in de stal die zonlicht nabootst zorgt voor meer rust en minder stress bij paarden, wat meetbaar is in de hormoonspiegels in het bloed. Er zijn commercieel verkrijgbare lampen die natuurlijk daglicht nabootsen, maar er is nog geen lamp die rekening houdt met meerdere kleuren (rood, blauw, groen en geel) licht, wat belangrijk is voor paarden. . Geel licht zou bijvoorbeeld bijdragen aan een betere wateropname. De lichaamstemperatuur van het paard blijkt toe te nemen bij blauw en rood licht, maar af te nemen bij groen of geel licht. Rood licht zorgt voor het stimuleren van de nachtelijke stijging in melatonine, terwijl blauw licht juist een verlaging in melatonine veroorzaakt wat bijdraagt aan meer alertheid. Signify® heeft verschillende modulaire lichtsystemen op de markt gebracht voor kippen, vissen en varkens, maar nog niet voor paarden. De innovatie is hier de aanpasbaarheid en modulariteit van het systeem. Voordat deze lichtsystemen ook voor paarden ontwikkeld kunnen worden, wil Signify® eerst meer onderzoek laten doen naar wat nu écht belangrijk is voor een paard. Signify heeft deze vraag neergelegd bij Lentiz MBO Maasland. In samenwerking met EquInnoLab. en de HAS green academy wil Lentiz daarom een onderzoek uitvoeren naar het effect van de aanwezigheid en de kleur van licht op het (slaap)gedrag en fysiologie van het paard.
