White paper Media Future Week Almere Het jaar 2011 werd door Neelie Kroes (Europees Commissaris ‘Digitale Agenda’) afgesloten met de presentatie van een nieuwe Europese richtlijn die ervoor moet zorgen dat overheden meer data voor hergebruik ter beschikking stellen. Open data is volgens Kroes 'goud waard'. Ook binnen de Nederlandse overheid groeit de aandacht voor open data. In de door het rijk geïnitieerde wedstrijd ‘Apps voor Nederland’ (http://www.appsvoornederland.nl/) konden deelnemers mobiele applicaties ontwikkelen met beschikbare overheidsdata. Onder die ontwikkelaars waren eerstejaars studenten Communication & Media Design van de Hogeschool Utrecht. Zij hebben eind vorig jaar enthousiast gepionierd en succesvolle concepten bedacht die gezien de overeenkomsten met de ‘prijswinnende applicaties’ (http://www.appsvoornederland.nl/nieuws/winnaars‐apps‐voor‐nederland‐bekend) zeker kans van slagen zouden hebben. Zie bijvoorbeeld de web‐based app ‘iHBO’ (http://www.appsvoornederland.nl/apps/ihbo) van Rein Krijgsman, Robert van Assenbergh en Pjotr Sen. Deze applicatie biedt aankomend studenten, ouders en decanen informatie op maat om een weloverwogen en goed geïnformeerde studiekeuze te kunnen maken. Deciding what kind of smart cities do we, as a society, want is not only a political question but also a matter of envisioning possible futures. The speculative narratives that designers produce to support their imagination are called "Design Fictions." We share SUBMERGED, a cross-platform project that combines game design, interactive narrative, and urban exploration with the objective of empowering citizens to produce their design fictions. Following a "Research through Design" practice, we describe our process for creating SUBMERGED, we synthesize some critical insights from our experience, and we urgently call for a dialogue between semioticians and design researchers on these topics.
Revolutionary advances in technology have been seen in many industries, with the IIoT being a prime example. The IIoT creates a network of interconnected devices, allowing smooth communication and interoperability in industrial settings. This not only boosts efficiency, productivity, and safety but also provides transformative solutions for various sectors. This research looks into open-source IIoT and edge platforms that are applicable to a range of applications with the aim of finding and developing high-potential solutions. It highlights the effect of open-source IIoT and edge computing platforms on traditional IIoT applications, showing how these platforms make development and deployment processes easier. Popular open-source IIoT platforms include DeviceHive and Thingsboard, while EdgeX Foundry is a key platform for edge computing, allowing IIoT applications to be deployed closer to data sources, thus reducing latency and conserving bandwidth. This study seeks to identify potential future domains for the implementation of IIoT solutions using these open-source platforms. Additionally, each sector is evaluated based on various criteria, such as development requirement analyses, market demand projections, the examination of leading companies and emerging startups in each domain, and the application of the International Patent Classification (IPC) scheme for in-depth sector analysis.
