Future Directions in Environmental Anthropology: Incorporating ethnography of environmental education

This chapter addresses environmental education as an important subject of anthropological inquiry and demonstrates how ethnographic research can contribute to our understanding of environmental learning both in formal and informal settings. Anthropology of environmental education is rich in ethnographies of indigenous knowledge of plants and animals, as well as emotional and religious engagement with nature passed on through generations. Aside from these ethnographies of informal environmental education, anthropological studies can offer a critical reflection on the formal practice of education, especially as it is linked to development in non-Western countries. Ethnographic and critical studies of environmental education will be discussed as one of the most challenging directions of environmental anthropology of the future. The art of interruption: concepts of art as a cooperative citizen practice driving cultural innovation and social change

The research studies informal learning in cooperative art practices. It describes the way artists and artistically skilled amateurs get together to produce culture and in that way give shape and meaning to their own public lives. In many ways the "cooperative art practices" of these "communities of creative citizens" interrupt the habits of seeing, thinking and doing in our formal society that is based on economic functionalism, technologic reasoning and mediazation of public relations. These interruptions challenge further questioning of these habits developing a repertoire of alternative action that is based on subjective relations between people, things and the world. But above all these interruptions offer an opportunity for the participants to manifest themselves publicly, discuss their subjective human being and ultimately learn from that.First the dissertation explores literature on the power of imagination and a progressive force is contributed to art and the role of esthetics, symbolism and drama in our contemporary western society. Next it treats art as a social practice that creates opportunities for human growth and development. After an explanation of the methodological matters of the research the study continues with a report of three cases of learning and culture producing communities that are initiated and guided by artists. The social settings of these cases are analyzed according to their social features and subsequently investigated through the lens of pedagogical theory. The dissertation concludes with recommendations for artists, art institutions and policy makers who strive to promote the developmental quality of art.

Verborgen competitie belicht juist deze kant van de sport. Hierbij staan eenvoudige vragen centraal die velen interesseren, maar waaraan nog maar weinigen aandacht hebben besteed. Waarom behoort American football tot de populairste sporten van de Verenigde Staten, is China een tafeltennisbolwerk, Nederland een schaatsland en Nieuw-Zeeland een rugbynatie? Waarom wordt voetbal wereldwijd massaal beoefend en kent korfbal alleen in ons land een grote populariteit? Maarten van Bottenburg beschrijft de verspreiding en popularisering van ongeveer dertig sporten over de hele wereld in de afgelopen honderd jaar en biedt de lezer daarmee een mondiaal sportpanorama. Cultureel ondernemerschap en het kunstonderwijs:"Van Assepoester en de Grote Boze wolf naar Rapunzel"

In beleidsnotities en publicaties in Nederland komt men de laatste jaren regelmatig de stelling tegen dat van het kunstonderwijs verwacht mag worden dat het haar studenten equipeert op hun toekomstige rol als cultureel ondernemer. Deze publicatie doet verslag van een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen cultureel ondernemerschap en het kunstonderwijs. Allereerst gaat de tekst in op de definitie van cultureel ondernemerschap en op de kwaliteiten ofwel competenties waar een cultureel ondernemer over dient te beschikken. Vervolgens staat de auteur stil bij de (vermeende) risico's van dit fenomeen. Als laatste komt de vraag aan de orde of en hoe het kunstonderwijs aandacht kan besteden aan dit onderwerp. De eindconclusie van dit onderzoek luidt: "Ze kunnen beter als Rapunzel hun vlecht uit het torenraam hangen om Prins Fortuin een handje te helpen dan lijdzaam wachten tot het lot hen gunstig gezind is." Het boek is bedoeld voor studenten en docenten van Kunstvakopleidingen, zoals conservatoria en academies voor beeldende vorming, drama, dans, circus en popmuziek, die meer over het onderwerp cultureel ondernemerschap willen weten. Het is geschreven in opdracht van het lectoraat "Kunstpraktijk in de samenleving" van Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Studenten en docenten van de verschillende academies leverden naast kunstenaars en cultureel ondernemers een bijdrage in het onderzoek.

The author refers to changes and reforms in the development of welfare state in the world from 1980s onwards. He describes various approaches and models, paying particular attention to the welfare society model, and partnership as its central concept. Furthermore, he analyses the functioning of the partnership model based on the experience of the European Union, Great Britain and Hungary

The curatorial turn in tourism and hospitality.

Purpose: This study, a conceptual paper, analyses the growth of curation in tourism and hospitality and the curator role in selecting and framing products and experiences. It considers the growth of expert, algorithmic, social and co-creative curation modes and their effects. Design/methodology/approach: Narrative and integrative reviews of literature on curation and tourism and hospitality are used to develop a typology of curation and identify different curation modes. Findings: Curational techniques are increasingly used to organise experience supply and distribution in mainstream fields, including media, retailing and fashion. In tourism and hospitality, curated tourism, curated hospitality brands and food offerings and place curation by destination marketing organisations are growing. Curation is undertaken by experts, algorithms and social groups and involves many of destination-related actors, producing a trend towards “hybrid curation” of places. Research limitations/implications: Research is needed on different forms of curation, their differential effects and the power roles of different curational modes. Practical implications: Curation is a widespread intermediary function in tourism and hospitality, supporting better consumer choice. New curators influence experience supply and the distribution of consumer attention, shaping markets and co-creative activities. Increased curatorial activity should stimulate aesthetic and stylistic innovation and provide the basis for storytelling and narrative in tourism and hospitality. Originality/value: This is the first study of curational strategies in tourism and hospitality, providing a definition and typology of curation, and linking micro and macro levels of analysis. It suggests the growth of choice-based logic alongside service-dominant logic in tourism and hospitality.

The Social Web and Learning

On the internet we see a continuously growing generation of web applications enabling anyone to create and publish online content in a simple way, to link content and to share it with others: wellknown instances include MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia and Google Earth. The internet has become a social software platform sailing under the Web 2.0 flag, creating revolutionary changes along the way: the individual, the end-user, comes first and can benefit optimally from an environment which has the following keywords: radically user-oriented, decentralized, collective and massive. ‘An environment in which each participant not only listens, but can also make his own voice heard’: the Social Web. This document describes a brief exploration of this Social Web and intends to gain insight in possible fundamental changes this phenomenon is causing or might cause in our society. Particular attention will be paid to the impact of the Social Web on learning and education. For how do two apparently contrary developments touch and overlap? On the one side we have the rapid growth of technologies bringing individuals together to communicate, collaborate, have fun and acquire knowledge (social software). And on the other hand we have the just conviction within the world of education that young people should not only acquire knowledge and information, but should also have all kinds of skills and experience in order to meet social and technological changes deliberately, and prepare for a life long of learning.
