Purpose Building services technologies such as home automation systems and remote monitoring are increasingly used to support people in their own homes. In order for these technologies to be fully appreciated by the endusers (mainly older care recipients, informal carers and care professionals), user needs should be understood1,2. In other words, supply and demand should match. Steele et al.3 state that there is a shortage of studies exploring perceptions of older users towards technology and the acceptance or rejection thereof. This paper presents an overview of user needs in relation to ambient assisted living (AAL) projects, which aim to support ageing-in-place in The Netherlands. Method A literature survey was made of Dutch AAL projects, focusing on user needs. A total of 7 projects concerned with older persons, with and without dementia, were included in the overview. Results & Discussion By and large technology is considered to be a great support in enabling people to age-in-place. Technology is, therefore, accepted and even embraced by many of the end-users and their relatives. Technology used for safety, security, and emergency response is most valued. Involvement of end-users improves the successful implementation of ambient technology. This is also true for family involvement in the case of persons with dementia. Privacy is mainly a concern for care professionals. This group is also key to successful implementation, as they need to be able to work with the technology and provide information to the end-users. Ambient technologies should be designed in an unobtrusive way, in keeping with indoor design, and be usable by persons with sensory of physical impairments. In general, user needs, particularly the needs of informal carers and care professionals, are an understudied topic. These latter two groups play an important role in implementation and acceptance among care recipients. They should, therefore, deserve more attention from the research community.

Creative arts engagement has been shown to be related to maintaining wellbeing in older adulthood (Tymoszuk et al., 2019). For people living with dementia, music can be engaging and rewarding (Baird & Thompson, 2018), and is often presented as a therapeutic activity. It is theorised that music’s capacity to effect change is due to its engaging, emotional, physical, personal, social and persuasive qualities (Brancatisano et al., 2020). However, music itself is a complex intervention (Loui, 2020) and the ‘creative’ in music activities in the small number of studies with people living with dementia is rarely described or critiqued (Creech et al., 2020). Music is often described as passive (receptive)/active to reflect different listening or playing activities. Only a few studies detail opportunities for people living with dementia to exercise creativity (e.g. Zeilig et al., 2019).Technology to assist these musical interactions in dementia falls under distinct categories of listening to music, or playing music, with very little afforded in the way of agency, choice or control (MacRitchie et al., 2023). A few possible explanations could be: i) the musical activity is valued in terms of pre/post cognitive or social changes (Kontos & Grigorovich, 2018) i.e., the activity itself is not particularly critiqued, ii) creativity is assumed to be embedded in the activity and does not need to be enhanced or supported, iii) the locus of creativity is in cognitive processes occurring in the brain, so people living with dementia are often ascribed a passive role in creative musical interactions (Zeilig et al., 2019). We propose a new way of thinking about musical interactions for people living with dementia, building from the enactive, embodied experience of music (Schiavio et al., 2022), and considering a more relational view. Leaving aside the framing where the person with dementia is limited in what creativity they can offer, we propose instead a framework of design where subtle acts of agency and (mini-C) creativity are afforded, supporting a myriad of musical interactions that sit between listening and performing.

Although social frailty has been described from a theoretical perspective, the lived experiences of older adults regarding social frailty are yet unknown. In this paper, we aim to (a) gain more in-depth insights into community-dwelling and assisted-living older adults' experiences of social frailty and (b) explore the differences in these experiences between these two groups. We conduct a thematic analysis of 38 interviews with community-dwelling and assisted-living older adults in rural villages the Netherlands. We structure our findings along three overarching themes which highlight different aspects of the social frailty experiences of our participants: (a) present resources and activities to fulfil social needs, (b) resources and activities that have been lost, and (c) how they manage and adapt to changes in resources and activities over time. Loneliness is only reported among the community-dwelling participants, while the loss of mobility and participation in (social) activities is experienced most strongly by the assisted-living participants. These findings challenge the widespread policies and practices of ageing in place. We conclude that for some older adults, living in assisted arrangements is preferred over ageing in place, as doing so can prevent social frailty. The key reason for this is that life in assisted living is likely to bring about new social resources and activities, which may serve to fulfil the social needs of older adults.

Psychosocial problems related to social isolation are a growing issue for wellbeing and health and have become a significant societal problem. This is especially relevant for children and adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities, and those spending extended periods in hospitals or permanently living in assisted living facilities. A lack of social relationships, social connectivity, and the inability to travel freely leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Loneliness interventions often use mediated environments to improve the feeling of connectedness. It has been proven that the utilization of haptic technologies enhances realism and the sense of presence in both virtual environments and telepresence in physical places by allowing the user to experience interaction through the sense of touch. However, the technology application is mostly limited to the experiences of serious games in professional environments and for-entertainment-gaming. This project aims to explore how haptic technologies can support the storytelling of semi-scripted experiences in VR to improve participants’ sense of presence and, therefore, the feeling of connectedness. By designing and prototyping the experience, the project aims to obtain insights and offer a better understanding of designing haptic-technology-supported storytelling and its potential to improve connectedness and become a useful tool in isolation interventions. The project will be conducted through the process of participants’ co-creation.
Globally, we face the urgent task of the transition to a climate neutral and circular society. Biobased materials are regenerative and add considerably less to the carbon stock in the atmosphere. Therefore they get high priority in several missions of the KIA theme “Energy transition and Sustainability”. In recent years significant progress has been made in biobased materials technology. In the “Circular Biobased Delta” region the Universities of Applied Sciences have grown into strong research partners in this field. However, successful business cases are few and society reacts only hesitantly. Accelerating the transition to biobased materials asks for a strategic move to a truly interdisciplinary collaboration. In response, in the Living Ecosystem programme, technological, economic and societal researchers from the three Universities of Applied Sciences (HZ, RUAS, Avans) join to form a core group. Together they will align and extend their research in shared topics such as biobased ingredients, circular building, and bioplastics. Around these topics, cross-sectoral communities within the existing regional ecosystem will be organised, connected and called upon to articulate interdisciplinary research projects and valorise the outcomes. The partners have different levels of achievement together forming a strong research group. They will share their experiences to collectively improve the volume, impact and quality of their research. In doing so they aim to become leaders within their separate disciplines and collectively evolve into an (inter)nationally recognised top-rank research community. The core group of researchers is assisted by a strong consortium, whose members represent the different topics and functions in the ecosystem. The consortium will advise the core group in defining and valorising their research. The regional ecosystem already hosts many “field labs”. The programme aims to create focus in their utilisation for an impactful programme of development, education and communication activities.
Indonesia’s peat forests remain severely threatened by forest fires, oil palm plantation development and extractive industries, which leads to biodiversity loss, increased emissions of greenhouse gases, and the marginalization of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In 2008 the Government of Indonesia introduced the Social Forestry Programme under which Indigenous Peoples and local communities can acquire a 35-year management permit. Since then, about 10 percent of Indonesian State Forest has been designated for community-based forest conservation and restoration initiatives. The devolution of authority to the local level has created a new playing field. The Social Forestry Programme reverses more than a century of centralistic forest policy, and requires a fundamental re-orientation of all actors working in the forestry sector. The central question underlying this proposal is how Dutch civil society organizations (applied universities and NGOs) can effectively support Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the protection and restoration of peat forests in Indonesia. This project aims to set up a Living Lab in Ketapang District in West Kalimantan to study, identify and test novel ways to work together with a variety of stakeholders to effectively conserve and restore peat forest. In Ketapang District, Tropenbos Indonesia has assisted three Village Forest Management Groups (Pematang Gadung, Sungai Pelang and Sungai Besar) in securing a Social Forestry Permit. Students from three Dutch Universities (Van Hall Larenstein, Aeres Hogeschool and Inholland) will conduct research in partnership with students from Universitas Tanjungpura on the integration of local ecological knowledge and technical expertise, on the economic feasibility of community-based forestry enterprises, and on new polycentric governance structures. The results of these studies will be disseminated to policy makers and civil society groups working in Indonesia, using the extensive networks of IUCN NL and Tropenbos Indonesia.
