Short version of 'Everyday Experiences of People Living with Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia: A Scoping Review'

Increasing attention has been paid to the ‘voice’ of people living with mild cognitive impairment (or dementia, but there is a lack of clarity about how everyday life is perceived from this insiderinsider’s perspective. This study aimed to explore the everyday life experiences, challenges and facilitators of individuals with MC I and dementia living at home.

A qualitative study on the perspectives of Turkish mothers and grandmothers in the Netherlands regarding the influence of grandmothers on health related practices in the first 1000 days of a child’s life

BackgroundGiven the importance of the first 1000 days of a child’s life in terms of laying the foundations for healthy growth and development, parents are a logical target group for supporting health-related practices with regard to young children. However, little attention is paid to the influence of the wider social community on the health and development of young children during this crucial period. This includes grandmothers, who often have a significant influence on health-related practices of their grandchildren. The aim of this study was therefore to explore the influence of grandmothers on health related practices of their grandchildren during the first 1000 days, from the perspectives of both grandmothers and mothers with a Turkish background.MethodThis qualitative study in the Netherlands collected data during focus group discussions with grandmothers (N = 3), interviews with grandmothers (N = 18) and interviews with mothers (N = 16), all with a Turkish background. Data was collected in the period between June 2019 and April 2021 and analysed using a thematic content analysis.ResultsThe influence of grandmothers and the wider social community on health related practices during the first 1000 days of a child’s life is substantial and self-evident. The support of grandmothers is often rooted in various socio-cultural norms and practices. The mothers of young children can experience the guidance and pressure they receive from grandmothers and the wider social community as quite stressful. Conflicting views and practices tend to arise between grandmothers and mothers when a grandmother babysits. Both mothers and grandmothers often find it difficult to discuss these differences openly, for fear this might lead to a family conflict.ConclusionThis study shows that grandmothers and the wider social community play an influential role in supporting a healthy first 1000 days of a child’s life. The strong involvement of grandmothers may lead to tension between the mothers and grandmothers when their ideas about healthy practices are not in agreement and may lead to unhealthy practices. In targeting this wider social community, it is important to consider the various socio-cultural factors that underlie the advice, support, practices and beliefs of the individuals involved.

De aanval is de beste verdediging

Fortuna Sittard wordt sinds twee jaar in financieel en bestuurlijk opzicht geleid door Isitan Gün, een Turkse econoom op wiens cv wordt vermeld dat hij na een carrière in de financiële wereld belandde bij de topclub Galatasaray S.K. In het kielzog van deze Turkse ondernemer streek nog een aantal Turkse zakenlieden in Zuid-Limburg neer, onder wie de 25-jarige accountant die club en geldschieter aan elkaar koppelde en nu verantwoordelijk is voor de boekhouding, en een nieuwe directeur voetbal en scout spelers. Interessant is ook de aanwezigheid van de (voormalige?) eigenaar van het Turkse spelersagentschap PMH Management & Consulting. Voormalig staat hier met opzet tussen haakjes en met een vraagteken vermeld. Volgens Gün is de bewuste zaakwaarnemer namelijk al tijden niet meer bij het agentschap betrokken, maar uit informatie van de Turkse Kamer van Koophandel blijkt dat zijn naam nog steeds wordt onder de kop ‘Management & Staf’ wordt vermeld. Het feit dat hierboven de spelerscarrousel bij Roda en de mogelijke betrokkenheid van een spelersmakelaar bij Fortuna expliciet zijn genoemd, heeft een reden. Ondanks het feit dat bij beide clubs geen aanwijzingen bestaan dat de investeringen die zijn gedaan een wederrechtelijke herkomst hebben, is uit de literatuur bekend dat bij het witwassen van crimineel geld in het professionele voetbal de transfer van spelers een belangrijk vehikel is. In dit artikel staat deze thematiek centraal. Na een korte uiteenzetting van de redenen waarom het professionele voetbal zich bij uitstek leent voor het witwassen van crimineel vermogen via de transfermarkt, wordt ingezoomd op de vraag welke mogelijkheden bestaan om dammen tegen dit fenomeen op te werpen. Daarbij wordt in het bijzonder aangehaakt bij de maatregelen die van lidstaten worden verwacht in het kader van de inmiddels vijfde anti-witwasrichtlijn. Bediscussieerd zal worden welke mogelijkheden de in Nederland bij witwasbestrijding en -preventie betrokken partijen hebben om malafide praktijken in het voetbal tegen te gaan en in hoeverre en op welke wijze zij daarvan gebruikmaken. Development and validation of the PACPN

Crying by healthcare professionals in the medical setting is a common but understudied phenomenon. We aimed to develop a questionnaire which measures the attitudes of parent towards crying pediatricians and pediatric nurses. We assessed reliability and validity in a group of parents of children who are living with, have died from or survived a life-limiting or life-threatening-condition. The development of the PACPN was based on modification of an existing questionnaire and expert input. In a cross-sectional-design, we assessed reliability and validity for both pediatricians and pediatric nurses. Dimensionality was assessed using principal component analysis (PCA). Cronbach’s alphas were calculated for each subscale. For construct validity, participants were asked to rate an additional question regarding the goal to measure parents’ attitudes towards crying pediatricians/pediatric nurses. We hypothesized that a higher score would have a strong positive correlation with the total score of the PACPN. At the end of the questionnaire, participants were asked to rate and comment the completeness. The developed 25-item questionnaire was completed by 116 parents. The PCA revealed two dimensions: (1) family’s circumstances; (2) personal circumstances of the pediatrician/pediatric nurse. Internal consistency was good (pediatricians,.81–.93; pediatric nurses,.83–.93). The hypothesis regarding construct validity was confirmed (Spearman’s rho =.71–.75). The completeness score was 7.7 (min–max 1–10, SD = 1.51). Conclusion: The PACPN showed good internal consistency and some degree of construct validity. We assume that by adding some items with nuance to the situation and the degree of crying the completeness of the questionnaire will improve. (Table presented.)
