Background Measuring nursing interventions and nurse-sensitive outcomes in a standardized manner is essential because it provides insight into the quality of delivered care. However, there is currently no systematic overview of the interventions conducted by district nurses, the evidence for the effects of these interventions, or what nurse-sensitive outcomes should be measured. Objective 1) To provide an overview of interventions for community-living older people evaluated in district nursing care and evidence for the effects of these interventions and 2) to identify the nurse-sensitive outcomes that are used to evaluate these district nursing care interventions, how these outcomes are measured, and in which patient groups they are applied. Design A systematic review of the literature. Setting District nursing care. Data sources MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and EMBASE. Methods Only experimental studies evaluating district nursing care interventions for communkity-living older people were included. A data extraction form was developed to extract the study characteristics and evaluate interventions and nurse-sensitive outcomes. The methodological quality of the included studies was reviewed using the 13-item critical appraisal tool for randomized controlled trials by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results A total of 22 studies were included. The methodological quality of the studies varied, with scores ranging from 6 to 11 on a scale of 0–13. The 22 interventions identified were heterogeneous with respect to intervention components, intervention delivery, and target population. The 44 outcomes identified were grouped into categories following the Nursing Outcome Classification and were measured in various ways and at various times. Conclusion This is the first systematic review summarizing the evidence for the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions conducted by district nurses on community-living older people. It is unclear what interventions are effective and what outcomes should be used to substantiate district nursing care effectiveness. Because only studies with experimental designs were included, this analysis may provide an incomplete assessment of the effectiveness of interventions in district nursing care. Therefore, it is highly necessary to produce methodologically strong evidence through research programs focusing on district nursing care.

Objectives: This study assesses social workers’ orientation toward the evidence-based practice (EBP) process and explores which specific variables (e.g. age) are associated. Methods: Data were collected from 341 Dutch social workers through an online survey which included a Dutch translation of the EBP Process Assessment Scale (EBPPAS), along with 13 background/demographic questions. Results: The overall level of orientation toward the EBP process is relatively low. Although respondents are slightly familiar with it and have slightly positive attitudes about it, their intentions to engage in it and their actual engagement are relatively low. Respondents who followed a course on the EBP process as a student are more oriented toward it than those who did not. Social workers under 29 are more familiar with the EBP process than those over 29. Conclusions: We recommend educators to take a more active role in teaching the EBP process to students and social workers.

Dit artikel beoogt een kritische analyse te geven van de manier waarop het begrip Evidence Based Practice in de literatuur doorgaans wordt ingevuld, waarna mogelijkheden worden geschetst de in het artikel geconstateerde bezwaren te ondervangen. METHODE. Er is literatuuronderzoek gedaan naar de manier waarop EBP in de literatuur wordt ingevuld. RESULTAAT. Hoewel in de literatuur met betrekking tot EBP wordt aangegeven dat het handelen van professionals gebaseerd zou moeten zijn op een integratie van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, klinische expertise en cliëntenvoorkeuren, krijgt de bron van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek de meeste nadruk. Binnen dit wetenschappelijk onderzoek wordt kwantitatief onderzoek bovendien doorgaans hoger gewaardeerd dan kwalitatief onderzoek. De andere kennisbronnen (deskundigheid van de cliënt en expertise van de verpleegkundige) die bij EBP worden onderscheiden, blijven veelal onderbelicht. DISCUSSIE EN CONCLUSIE. De manier waarop EBP meestal wordt ingevuld en geïmplementeerd brengt een aantal beperkingen met zich mee. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de beperkte aandacht voor: de kern van het verplegen, de interactie tussen de cliënt en de verpleegkundige, de context of de cultuur waarin de zorgverlening plaatsvindt, het benutten van de ervaringsdeskundigheid van de cliënt en de expertise van de verpleegkundige zelf. In het artikel worden suggesties gegeven om deze beperkingen te ondervangen, zodat EBP inderdaad de integratie wordt van de verschillende kennisbronnen die in de literatuur worden onderscheiden en EBP met mogelijk meer succes kan worden geïmplementeerd.
