Na drie jaar wordt de eerste fase van FabLab Enschede succesvol afgesloten. Met dit fraaie boekje (ontwerp door Karin Voortman-Overbeek) wordt teruggeblikt op een stormachtige start die mede mogelijk is gemaakt door de gemeente Enschede, de provincie Overijssel en Saxion. Met interviews en voorbeelden wordt een beeld gegeven van wat het FabLab Enschede gedaan en bereikt heeft en hoe het na deze eerste fase verder wil.

Research through design allows creating a dialogue with the material. It uses making andreflection on action as a generator of knowledge. Our aim is to explore the opportunities and challenges of smart textiles. The Fablab is our set up, a place that allows us to combine the hackingscientific-, and design community. It stimulates collaboration and the knowledge exchange needed for the development of smart textile systems. A collaborative prototyping workshop for medical products combined two worlds. The textile world in Saxion aims at incorporating conductive materials into textile structures and functional- / 3D printing to create systems for applications such as flexible heating systems and wearable technology. We combined this with the world of Industrial Design at TU/e, focused on the design of intelligent products, systems and services by the research through design approach. The collaboration between these different disciplines accelerated the process by reducing the resistance to the new and skipped the frustration on failure. In the Ems-Dollart-region in the North of the Netherlands and North-West Germany, startups are contributing to the region’s economy. In principal, well-developed startup and entrepreneurship ecosystems are an important factor for prosperity. Such ecosystems consist of companies, regional policy institutions, universities and other private or public organisations. In a functioning entrepreneurship ecosystem, these players optimally interact with each other. In January 2019, the project “Startup Perspectives” (Bakker et al., 2019) explored the opportunities and possibilities that a cross-border startup scene would bring to the Ems-Dollart-region. Based on this research, the Startup Ems-Dollart-region project emerged. Within the Interreg V A scheme, the project is funded by Interreg/EDR and runs from June 1st 2019-June 30th 2022. The aim of the Startup Ems-Dollart-region project is to facilitate a cross-border startup ecosystem between the three provinces of Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen on the Dutch side and the WeserEms region in Germany. This will entail the formation of a (digital) network for the startup scene, tailored mentoring programs for young entrepreneurs and the development of entrepreneurship education programs with a cross-border focus. Overall, a sustainable and long-lasting entrepreneurship ecosystem shall facilitate cross-border activities among young entrepreneurs and startups.To gain an understanding of the current entrepreneurship environment in all the regions, a mapping of the relevant stakeholders took place at the beginning of the project. This report will summarize the key findings of this mapping exercise.

The pace of introduction of new technology and thus continuous change in skill needs at workplaces, especially for the engineers, has increased. While digitization induced changes in manufacturing, construction and supply chain sectors may not be felt the same in every sector, this will be hard to escape. Both young and experienced engineers will experience the change, and the need to continuously assess and close the skills gap will arise. De opdracht voor beide onderzoeken is voortgekomen uit de cultuurnota Alles is NU, cultuur- en erfgoednota 2016 (Provincie Utrecht, 2016). Innovatie en wendbaarheid zijn twee essentiële voorwaarden voor economische groei en welzijn. De noordelijke regio heeft veel potentie maar de benutting ervan is niet vanzelfsprekend. Het lectoraat Wendbaar Vakmanschap draagt bij aan Vital Regions, het hogeschoolbrede zwaartepunt waarmee NHL Hogeschool zich inzet voor het sociaalmaatschappelijk welzijn van de regio door praktijkgericht onderzoek te doen naar huidige en vernieuwende leerprocessen die veelal met samenwerkingspartners vorm krijgen. Het onderwijs bereidt jonge mensen voor op een actieve rol in de samenleving, economische zelfredzaamheid en een leven lang leren. Het lectoraat is ingesteld om kennis te ontwikkelen over leren, veranderen en innoveren. Het richt zich op leerprocessen die van invloed zijn op de wendbaarheid van vakmensen en professionals. Het zijn immers de wendbare professionals die innovaties aanjagen en maatschappelijke meerwaarde creëren en daarmee een cruciale rol spelen in de regionale activiteitensystemen
