Total and chronic food refusal (i.e., the refusal of all types of food during a prolonged period) in young children with developmental disabilities can be treated effectively using a combination of environmental interventions. However, no guidelines for the selection of food items to offer the child in these interventions are available. The aim of the present study was to assess the preferences for specific food items of young Dutch nondisabled children (N = 254) in order to enable trainers to select food items that maximize success of feeding interventions. Results indicate that 54 out of 107 food items were found to be preferred. The mean appreciation scores of boys and girls did not differ significantly for these preferred food items, except for raisins and brown bread. Also, there were no differences between the distinguished age-groups, except for peach. Recommendations for the selection of food items within feeding intervention for total and chronic food refusal in young children with developmental disabilities are given.

Background: Infantile hereditary proximal spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 is characterized by onset in the first 6 months of life and severe and progressive muscle weakness. Dysphagia is a common complication but has not been studied in detail. Objective: To study feeding and swallowing problems in infants with SMA type 1, and to explore the relation between these problems and functional motor scores. Methods: We prospectively included 16 infants with SMA type 1 between September 2016 and October 2018. Eleven infants received palliative care and five infants best supportive care in combination with nusinersen. We compiled and used an observation list with feeding related issues and observed feeding sessions during inpatient and outpatient visits. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders (CHOP INTEND) was used as a measure of motor function. Results: All infants in the palliative care group (median onset of disease 14 days (range 1–56); median inclusion in the study 52 days (range 16–252) demonstrated symptoms of fatigue during feeding and unsafe swallowing. Symptoms were short nursing sessions (10–15 minutes), and not being able to finish the recommended feeding volumes (72%); increased frequency of feeding sessions (55%); coughing when drinking or eating (91%), and wet breathing during and after feeding (64%).Two out of five infants in the nusinersen group (median onset of disease 38 days (range 21–90); inclusion in the study at 63 days (range 3–218) were clinically pre-symptomatic at the start of treatment. The other three infants showed symptoms of fatigue and unsafe swallowing at inclusion in the study. These symptoms initially decreased after the start of the treatment, but (re)appeared in all five infants between the ages of 8 to 12 months, requiring the start tube of feeding. In the same period motor function scores significantly improved (median increase CHOP INTEND 16 points). Conclusion: Impaired feeding and swallowing remain important complications in infants with SMA type 1 after the start of nusinersen. Improvement of motor function does not imply similar gains in bulbar function.

The bilingual education standard agreed by the Network for Dutch Bilingual schools requires subject teachers to be able to provide feedback on their learners’ language use. But this is not as easy as it seems. What type of language do learners produce in subject lessons? What language aspects could the feedback focus on, and how is this best done?In this workshop, we will look at various types of feedforward and feedback that teachers can use to support and develop their learners’ subject-specific language. By watching videos of pre-vocational learners performing tasks, we will focus on finding ways to support learners’ spoken language. At the end of the workshop, teachers will have gained insight into the principles of feedback and feedforward, will have designed feedback/forward activities and will have applied both to videotaped performances.

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a delicacy fish and an integral part of the Dutch culinary history. However, the stock of adult eel has decreased significantly due to a precipitous recruitment of glass eel fall. This relates to multiple factors including obstacles in migration pathways, loss of habitat and chemical pollution. Consequently, Anguilla anguilla has become a critically endangered species and is protected under European legislation. One possible solution, explored on laboratory scale, is the captive reproduction of eels and growth of glass eel in aquaculture. A big challenge of this technique is the limiting aspect of possible nutrients for the eels in the larval stage, as the diet must be delivered in micrometric capsules (< 20 µm) with a high protein content. Such diets are not yet available on the market. Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) is a novel option to prepare a micro-diet suitable for eel larvae. EHDA is especially interesting for its narrow size distribution capabilities and for applications which require submicrometric sizes. This project aims to evaluate the use of EHDA to produce high protein content micrometric size capsules for feeding larval eels. If successful, this would assist in the captivity production of glass eel and to make the eel culture independent of wild catches, restoring the culinary market. The project will be conducted in two phases. Firstly, tests will be conducted to evaluate the necessary conditions of the capsules using EHDA. Subsequently, the obtained capsules will be tested as feed for eel larvae. The main objective is to favour the development of a more sustainable eel culture, regarding the possibilities of investigating the current fish in natura option and exchanging it for a captivity one.
The bio-transition will require mass mobilization of biomass for industrial feedstock, of which lignocellulose from agricultural residues is a promising sustainable source. Agricultural lignocellulosic residues (ALR) are available in varying densities across the EU and offer an opportunity to improve environmental outcomes in agriculture as well as in refining. While technologies are emerging, the future demands of industry for ALR are not understood, limiting the ability of biomass intermediaries to develop a supply chain. This project is a collaboration of Looop, BioGrowth Development (BD), and MNEXT, with the aim to quantify and characterize ALR in the EU and match it to expected demand from the refining industry. The spatial distribution of ALR, as well as the technical requirements of refineries, are critical components to developing a sustainable supply chain. Looop aspires to create circularity between ALRs and industry, and together with the biomass consulting experience of BD have approached MNEXT to leverage their knowledge of biorefinery applications. The focus of the project is to spatially model ALR availability across the EU and identify locations where mobilizing biomass for biorefining is most feasible according to technical, environmental, and logistical considerations. The one-year collaboration enables sufficient mapping, modeling, and exploration of parameters, with a focus on creating results applicable to a wide range of future scenarios. The project makes use of academic and industry knowledge to both create industry solutions and establish a starting point for further research.
