The daily lives of young professionals can be thought of as a balancing act, as they struggle with juggling their different work and nonwork roles (Allen et al., 2019). Young professionals do not only invest a considerable amount of time and energy resources in starting their careers, but also in building up a family life. As such, many want to succeed as hard-working, devoted professionals (i.e., the ‘ideal worker’), as well as become, or come across as, involved and nurturing parents (i.e., the ‘ideal parent’) (Ladge & Little, 2018). In addition, young professionals tend to increasingly experience that they need to live up to perceived expectations coming from social network sites on how to showcase oneself in the most perfect way (i.e., the media ‘ideal’) (Shah & Tewari, 2016). Accordingly, young professionals may (re)construct ‘ideal’ images of themselves in the work, private, and online domains which lean towards these ideal selves and away from their undesired selves (Leary & Kowalski, 1990). In the context of the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory (Hobfoll & Wells, 1998), such an image (re)construction process (Dumas & Sanchez-Burks, 2015; Humberd et al., 2015; Roberts, 2005) may play a critical role in the attainment of relevant personal resources, such as pride, status and liking, on the one hand, and the loss of resources (i.e., energy resources), on the other hand.

In dit artikel wordt dit ideaal geproblematiseerd en opnieuw doordacht door het te verbinden met de oorspronkelijke betekenis van auto-nomie als zichzelf de wet opleggen. De vraag wordt gesteld waarin deze 'wet' bestaat en hoe zich deze verhoudt tot de christelijke notie van afhankelijkheid van God als een vorm van heteronomie. Wat betekent dit alles voor vormingsidealen in het onderwijs?

Neighborhood image processing operations on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are considered as memory intensive operations. A large memory bandwidth is required to transfer the required pixel data from external memory to the processing unit. On-chip image buffers are employed to reduce this data transfer rate. Conventional image buffers, implemented either by using FPGA logic resources or embedded memories are resource inefficient. They exhaust the limited FPGA resources quickly. Consequently, hardware implementation of neighborhood operations becomes expensive, and integrating them in resource constrained devices becomes unfeasible. This paper presents a resource efficient FPGA based on-chip buffer architecture. The proposed architecture utilizes full capacity of a single Xilinx BlockRAM (BRAM36 primitive) for storing multiple rows of input image. To get multiple pixels/clock in a user defined scan order, an efficient duty-cycle based memory accessing technique is coupled with a customized addressing circuitry. This accessing technique exploits switching capabilities of BRAM to read 4 pixels in a single clock cycle without degrading system frequency. The addressing circuitry provides multiple pixels/clock in any user defined scan order to implement a wide range of neighborhood operations. With the saving of 83% BRAM resources, the buffer architecture operates at 278 MHz on Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA with an efficiency of 1.3 clock/pixel. It is thus capable to fulfill real time image processing requirements for HD image resolution (1080 × 1920) @103 fcps.

Purpose: Employer branding (EB) has become a powerful tool for organizations to attract employees. Recruitment communication ideally reveals the image that companies want to portray to potential employees to attract talents with the right skills and competences for the organization. This study explores the impact of EB on employer attractiveness by testing how pre-existing employee preferences interact with EB and how this interaction affects employer attractiveness. Design/methodology/approach: A quasi-experiment among 289 final-year students was used to test the relationships between EB, perceived employer image, person-organization (P-O) fit and employer attractiveness, and the potential moderating variables of pre-existing preferences, in this case operationalized as locational preferences. Students are randomly assigned to four vacancies: one with and one without EB cues in two different locations: Groningen and Amsterdam. The authors used standard scales for attractiveness, perceptions of an employer and person-organization fit. The authors test the relationships using a regression analysis. Findings: Results suggest that if respondents have previous predispositions, then their preference can be enhanced using an EB-targeted strategy. Based on these results, the authors can conclude that EB and related practices can be successful avenues for organizations in the war for talent, particularly if they reaffirm previous preferences of potential employees. Originality/value: The research is original in the way it provides empirical evidence on the relationship between EB and attractiveness, particularly when previous employee preferences exist. This is of value to employers using EB as a tool to influence employer attractiveness.

Objectives: To understand healthcare professionals' experiences and perceptions of nurses' potential or ideal roles in pharmaceutical care (PC). Design: Qualitative study conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Setting: Between December 2018 and October 2019, interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals of 14 European countries in four healthcare settings: hospitals, community care, mental health and long-term residential care. Participants: In each country, pharmacists, physicians and nurses in each of the four settings were interviewed. Participants were selected on the basis that they were key informants with broad knowledge and experience of PC. Data collection and analysis: All interviews were conducted face to face. Each country conducted an initial thematic analysis. Consensus was reached through a face-to-face discussion of all 14 national leads. Results: 340 interviews were completed. Several tasks were described within four potential nursing responsibilities, that came up as the analysis themes, being: 1) monitoring therapeutic/adverse effects of medicines, 2) monitoring medicines adherence, 3) decision making on medicines, including prescribing 4) providing patient education/information. Nurses' autonomy varied across Europe, from none to limited to a few tasks and emergencies to a broad range of tasks and responsibilities. Intended level of autonomy depended on medicine types and level of education. Some changes are needed before nursing roles can be optimised and implemented in practice. Lack of time, shortage of nurses, absence of legal frameworks and limited education and knowledge are main threats to European nurses actualising their ideal role in PC. Conclusions: European nurses have an active role in PC. Respondents reported positive impacts on care quality and patient outcomes when nurses assumed PC responsibilities. Healthcare professionals expect nurses to report observations and assessments. This key patient information should be shared and addressed by the interprofessional team. The study evidences the need of a unique and consensus-based PC framework across Europe.

In dit project bundelden ontwerpbureau DesignArbeid, het lectoraat Image in Context van Academy Minerva en kunstruimte Sign de krachten om jonge kunstenaars in staat te stellen om in door henzelf gevormde teams de mogelijkheden van de publieke ruimte begin 21 eeuw te onderzoeken en zichtbaar te maken. De straat als galery waarin projecten in een tijdslijn na elkaar eigen vormen van counter public space (Klug ..) kunnen realiseren. De kunstenaars zetten zich uiteen met actuele kwesties waarvoor nieuwe vormen van uitwisseling en participatie werden ontwikkeld: de klimaatcrisis tastbaar in het stijgende water, de rol van de vrouw binnen de studentenvereniging, vervreemding in het publiek domein, ons koloniaal verleden zichtbaar in onze publieke ruimte, propaganda achter grote stadsevents, het gemak waarmee ons fakenews op de mouw gespeld kan worden en de wijze waarop publiek en privaat domein in elkaar overlopen.De vraag die voor ons allen leidend is: Hoe kunnen kunstenaars en ontwerpers interventies doen die eraan bijdragen dat we als autonoom denkende mensen weer verbinding krijgen met wat Bruno Latour (2019) het Aardse noemt. Het Aardse als zijnde een concept dat ons helpt om de richting aan te geven waarheen we ons moeten bewegen in een bewustzijn dat de wereld niet meer bestaat uit een omgeving waar mensen zich in bevinden, maar uit een krachtenveld, een ecologie, waar we onderdeel van zijn. De onderzoekers van het lectoraat zoeken de conceptuele invalshoeken die ons helpen om zichtbaar te maken welke mogelijkheden de kunst heeft om het hoofd te bieden aan de vele vormen van propaganda en disciplinering in het begin van de 21 e eeuw die dit onmogelijk willen maken. Daarom vindt u in deze publicatie naast een schets van de verschillende interventies die de deelnemende kunstenaars ontwikkelden, ook de verschillende conceptuele perspectieven waar de onderzoekers uit het lectoraat mee werken.De hier gepresenteerde artistieke praktijken zijn een moment in de ontwikkeling van de kunstenaars, het gevolg van een scala aan ontmoetingen die eraan vooraf zijn gegaan en de consekwentie van een dynamiek die ze op een geven moment met elkaar in gang hebben durven zetten. Zonder de moed tot handelen was er nooit iets gebeurd. De gepresenteerde concepten zijn de diepe gronden waar een onderzoeker pas na verloop van tijd op durft te gaan bouwen. Deze concepten kunnen iets teweegbrengen. In de ontmoetingen kan het concept zich gronden en verbreden en kunnen de artistieke praktijken nieuwe betekenislagen krijgen. Samen helpen ze ons reflecteren op de nieuwe rollen van kunstenaars en ontwerpers in de openbare ruimte als publiek domein.

While there is extensive research on how Russian interference – in particular Russian disinformation operation – has played out in different European countries, indications of Russian interference directly targeting EU, its institutions or policies received little attention. This paper argues why there is good reason to assume that the EU, its institutions and its policies are an ideal a target for authoritarian regimes to exploit. It then explores in what ways, if any, Russian disinformation campaigning targeted EU institutions and their policies during the political and electoral campaigns leading up to the European Parliament (EP) elections of May 2019. In this context disinformation campaigning in terms of both network flows and contents (‘narratives’) have been examined, on the basis of a review of various reports identifying Russian interference and disinformation and of analyses of overall disinformation flows in Europe and the use of a database monitoring occurrences of disinformation.

Prompt design can be understood similarly to query design, as a prompt aiming to understand cultural dimensions in visual research, forcing the AI to make sense of ambiguity as a way to understand its training dataset and biases ( Niederer, S. and Colombo, G., ‘Visual Methods for Digital Research’). It moves away from prompting engineering and efforts to make “code-like” prompts that suppress ambiguity and prevent the AI from bringing biases to the surface. Our idea is to keep the ambiguity present in the image descriptions like in natural language and let it flow through different stages (degrees) of the broken telephone dynamics. This way we have less control over the result or selection of the ideal result and more questions about the dynamics implicit in the biases present in the results obtained.Different from textual or mathematical results, in which prompt chains or asking the AI to explain how it got the result might be enough, images and visual methods assisted by AI demand new methods to deal with that. Exploring and developing a new approach for it is the main goal of this research project, particularly interested in possible biases and unexplored patterns in AI’s image affordances.How could we detect small biases in describing images and creating based on descriptions when it comes to AI? What exactly do the words written by AI when describing an image stand for? When detecting a ‘human’ or ‘science’, for example, what elements or archetypes are invisible between prompting, and the image created or described?Turning an AI’s image description into a new image could help us to have a glimpse behind the scenes. In the broken telephone game, small misperceptions between telling and hearing, coding and decoding, produce big divergences in the final result - and the cultural factors in between have been largely studied. To amplify and understand possible biases, we could check how this new image would be described by AI, starting a broken telephone cycle. This process could shed light not just into the gap between AI image description and its capacity to reconstruct images using this description as part of prompts, but also illuminate biases and patterns in AI image description and creation based on description.It is in line with previous projects on image clustering and image prompt analysis (see reference links), and questions such as identification of AI image biases, cross AI models analysis, reverse engineering through prompts, image clustering, and analysis of large datasets of images from online image and video-based platforms.The experiment becomes even more relevant in light of the results from recent studies (Shumailov et al., 2024) that show that AI models trained on AI generated data will eventually collapse.To frame this analysis, the proposal from Munn, Magee and Arora (2023) titled Unmaking AI Imagemaking introduces three methodological approaches for investigating AI image models: Unmaking the ecosystem, Unmaking the data and Unmaking the outputs.First, the idea of ecosystem was taken for these authors to describe socio-technical implications that surround the AI models: the place where they have been developed; the owners, partners, or supporters; and their interests, goals, and impositions. “Research has already identified how these image models internalize toxic stereotypes (Birnhane 2021) and reproduce forms of gendered and ethnic bias (Luccioni 2023), to name just two issues” (Munn et al., 2023, p. 2).There are also differences between the different models that currently dominate the market. Although Stable Diffusion seems to be the most open due to its origin, when working with images with this model, biases appear even more quickly than in other models. “In this framing, Stable Diffusion becomes an internet-based tool, which can be used and abused by “the people,” rather than a corporate product, where responsibility is clear, quality must be ensured, and toxicity must be mitigated” (Munn et al., 2023, p. 5).To unmaking the data, it is important to ask ourselves about the source and interests for the extraction of the data used. According to the description of their project “Creating an Ad Library Political Observatory”, “This project aims to explore diverse approaches to analyze and visualize the data from Meta’s ad library, which includes Instagram, Facebook, and other Meta products, using LLMs. The ultimate goal is to enhance the Ad Library Political Observatory, a tool we are developing to monitor Meta’s ad business.” That is to say, the images were taken from political advertising on the social network Facebook, as part of an observation process that seeks to make evident the investments in advertising around politics. These are prepared images in terms of what is seen in the background of the image, the position and posture of the characters, the visible objects. In general, we could say that we are dealing with staged images. This is important since the initial information that describes the AI is in itself a representation, a visual creation.

Aim: There is often a gap between the ideal of involving older persons iteratively throughout the design process of digital technology, and actual practice. Until now, the lens of ageism has not been applied to address this gap. The goals of this study were: to voice the perspectives and experiences of older persons who participated in co-designing regarding the design process; their perceived role in co-designing and intergenerational interaction with the designers; and apparent manifestations of ageism that potentially influence the design of digital technology. Methods: Twenty-one older persons participated in three focus groups. Five themes were identified using thematic analysis which combined a critical ageism ‘lens’ deductive approach and an inductive approach. Results: Ageism was experienced by participants in their daily lives and interactions with the designers during the design process. Negative images of ageing were pointed out as a potential influencing factor on design decisions. Nevertheless, positive experiences of inclusive design pointed out the importance of “partnership” in the design process. Participants defined the “ultimate partnership” in co-designing as processes in which they were involved from the beginning, iteratively, in a participatory approach. Such processes were perceived as leading to successful design outcomes, which they would like to use, and reduced intergenerational tension. Conclusions: This study highlights the potential role of ageism as a detrimental factor in how digital technologies are designed. Viewing older persons as partners in co-designing and aspiring to more inclusive design processes may promote designing technologies that are needed, wanted and used.
