The sixth book in the Ebifananyi series is based on the photo collections of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, and the archive of the Brothers of Christian Instruction, who ran the school, that was founded by the White Fathers in 1906 in 1926. The title of the book Duc in AltumThe book tries to invoke thoughts and discussion about both the good and the questionable sides of the formal educational system in Uganda that was set up by various missionaries.Ebifananyi 6 was launched first at the school it is about, then with an exhibition at the Uganda Museum in Kampala. An extra large book was made in an edition of one as part the continuing research and for the European launch that will take place in Biel on September 10th. Another part of the things still going on in relation to this book, initiated by one of the editors of the school magazine remakes will be made of some of the historical photographs in this book.

Er is wereldwijd een groeiende groep milieuvluchtelingen waarvoor nog geen internationaal beschermingsregime bestaat. Het internationaal recht biedt geen adequaat antwoord. Dit artikel laat zien welke soorten milieuvluchtelingen bestaan, en zal betogen dat de bescherming van deze groep plaats kan vinden onder het VN-principe The Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Staten en de internationale gemeenschap hebben een zorgplicht voor milieuvluchtelingen. De basis hiervan ligt bij de Rechten van de Mens. De effectieve uitvoering van een aantal basisrechten wordt immers negatief beïnvloed door milieudegradatie. Tevens wordt staatssoevereiniteit steeds meer beschouwd als een verantwoordelijkheid. Via The Responsibility to Protect ontstaat er een integrale aanpak: 1) een staat is ten eerste zelf verantwoordelijk voor de bescherming van milieuvluchtelingen, 2) de internationale gemeenschap heeft een verantwoordelijkheid een staat hierbij te assisteren, en 3) indien een staat zijn milieuvluchtelingen niet wil of niet kan beschermen, verschuift de verantwoordelijkheid voor dit probleem naar de internationale gemeenschap, om collectief snel en beslissend te reageren. ABSTRACT The number of environmental refugees is growing, but an international legal protection regime is non-existent. This article shows eight different kinds of environmental refugees, and will argue that the protection of these groups can take place under the UN principle The Responsibility to Protect (R2P). States and the international community are obliged to help environmental refugees, based on the International Bill of Human Rights. The effective implementation of basic rights is influenced negatively by environmental degradation. Furthermore, changed notions regarding state sovereignty are also pointing at the responsibility of the state. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) offers an integral approach: In first instance, the responsibility to take protective measures lies with the state itself. Secondly, the international community has a responsibility to assist. Lastly, when a state is not able or willing to protect its environmental refugees, the responsibility yields to the international community, to respond in a swift and decisive manner.

To be able to ‘survive’ in a more and more globalising world, students of universities and universities of applied sciences must attain international competencies, in this study defined as respectively general personal, social competencies, intercultural competencies, a command of foreign languages and international academic and professional competencies. International competencies can be attained in different ways by students: internally (via foreign teachers and/or students) and/or externally (via internships and/or exchanges). The external attainment of competencies is far more successful when students are well prepared and when they receive proper supervision, both during and after their stay abroad. If this is not the case, students often tend to develop at a personal, social and (inter)cultural level, but significantly less at an academic and professional level (Stronkhorst, 2005). These students are also often unable to recognize and express which knowledge and skills they attained during their stay abroad (Orahood et al., 2004; CERI, 2008; Deardorff, 2009). With the preceding information as a starting point, the Social Work degree programme of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle started the minor ‘Social Work in Africa & Asia’ in the beginning of 2014. Students who participate firstly pass through a a six-week preparatory theoretical programma, followed by a three-month internship in Uganda or Vietnam. The minor concludes with a two-week postmortem programme. The practical component of the minor involves Eye4Africa, a Dutch internship supervision agency for internships in Uganda, Kenya and Vietnam. Eye4Africa arranges the internships, prepares the students for their stay abroad, both in the Netherlands and abroad, and then offers them support, coaching and intervision meetings. At the initiative of and in collaboration with Eye4Africa The Hague University of Applied Sciences carried out a qualitative study amongst eight female students of the Social Work degree programme of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences who followed the minor ‘Social Work in Africa & Asia’ during the academic year 2014-2015. The following was key to the research conducted: the question of the extent to which preparation for the Social Work in Africa & Asia minor at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences and the supervision that the Eye4Africa internship agency offers fourth-year Social Work students during their internships in Uganda in the autumn of 2014 had a positive impact on the attainment and further development of international competencies. The results have shown that the students found it very easy to recognise and express the knowledge and skills they gained during their internships. Secondly, the students mentioned clear professional, intercultural and personal, social growth. No growth or development in relation to academic competencies was observed in this study. However, this is not unusual, as the students were doing internships. Academic competencies are particularly attained when studying abroad, while professional competencies are particularly attained during internships (Hoven & Walenkamp, 2013; 2015). The main conclusion of this study is that the preparation and the supervision by Windesheim University of Applied Sciences and Eye4Africa within the framework of the minor ‘Social Work in Africa & Asia’ has aided students with regard to growth and the (further) development of international competencies. Some important short comments are that a relatively small, very one-sided sample has been interviewed and that there was no control group.

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science.

Ebifananyi at The Uganda Museum, an exhibition relating to my doctoral research, following up on an earlier exhibition in Antwerp, Belgium and in Kampala part of KLAART18, a ‘public art festival which celebrates public art for and in the city’. The visitors of the show in Antwerp were welcomed with a letter from co-curators of the exhibition Bas Vroege and Joachim Naudts. Here they were welcomed by me: Dear Visitor,You are most welcome to a temporary exhibition about photographs. ‘Ebifananyi’, the Luganda word that is used to signify photographs as well as other likenesses, gives you the opportunity to see a variety of historical photographs made in Uganda. It also invites you to reflect on what you see.In 2011 Canon Griffin and I set up History In Progress Uganda, a platform that digitizes and shares historical photographs. With the help of numerous Ugandan photographers, history enthusiasts and artists I produced eight books with the same title of the exhibition. Each book presents a collection of historical photographs and contemporary responses to it. Last year an exhibition took place in FoMu, the photo museum in Antwerp, Belgium. It presented the content of these books to the Belgian audience. The conditions of this museum cannot be reproduced in Uganda.We here present to you both two- and three dimensional documentation of that show. Photographs are always made from a particular viewpoint and the way they look depends on the technology that was available to the photographer.It is not unusual for photographs to show what someone wants someone else to see rather than to be neutral documentation. They can be used as tools of identification and to estrange people from each other. The fifth book in the Ebifananyi series is based on the memoirs and slide collection of Engineer Martin Wangutusi Wambwa (b. 1928). He is one of the first western trained Ugandan engineers. Journalism and photography would have been his second vocational choice, had his engineering ambitions not worked out.Uhuru (Swahili for freedom/independence) works towards and around the idea of Uganda’s independence. Wambwa’s slides show a (literally and figuratively speaking) colourful, clean and optimistic place. His memoirs take us through what it meant and took for him to be educated the way he was, leading to a climax in which things started to change from ‘Uhuru na kazi’ (Freedom and Work) to ‘Uhuru na vita’ (Freedom and War).Three contemporary photographers were invited to engage with and respond to Wambwa’s photographs. Elsadig Mohamed (SD), Luuk van den Berg (NL) and Rumanzi Canon (UG) did this with each a different visual strategy related to their own practices as photographers.The work presented in this book was part of the City Remixing exhibitions that took place in Uganda (March 2016) and The Netherlands (April 2016). Chronic sorrow involves parents’ enduring grief due to their child’s disability. This stems not only from the recurring painful reality parents face, which differs from the life they had hoped for their children, families, and themselves but from also being confronted with societal and personal norms and expectations they cannot meet. There is a lack of research on the lived experiences of parents’ chronic sorrow. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study involving six parents with severely disabled children explored what it is like for parents to confront being ‘‘different.’’ Besides sorrow, the parents experienced intense ambiguity,guilt, and uncertainty while navigating societal expectations and their own perceptions of their children. Their ideas of parenthood and their self-identity as parents proved central to their strategies. This study provides insight into the intricacies of this particular aspect of chronic sorrow in parents, with relevance for research and practice.

Lake Kivu is experiencing unprecedented decline in production of Tanganyika Sardine (Limnothrissa miodon). This study sought to characterise the value chain of this fish species so as to chart its sustainable utilisation. The study performed in 2015 found two chains; an informal chain that takes 30% of the production and a formal chain that handles 70%. The average catch of sardine was 30 kg/day in the high production season and <15 kg/day in the low season. Two thirds of the fishers were not aware of the governing law. Fishing malpractices included fishing in prohibited sites, beach seining and fishing during moratorium period. Majority of fishers were not satisfied with the price offered in the market as costs involved in fishing was 701 Rwanda Francs/kg caught. This is despite the shift in time since the study was performed. Therefore, there is need for re-training of value chain actors, increasinglake surveillance, strengthening internal controls of the Fishers’ Cooperatives and improving information sharing and communication among value chain actors.
