Abstract: The key challenge of managing Floating Production Storage and Offloading assets (FPSOs) for offshore hydrocarbon production lies in maximizing the economic value and productivity, while minimizing the Total Cost of Ownership and operational risk. This is a comprehensive task, considering the increasing demands of performance contracting, (down)time reduction, safety and sustainability while coping with high levels of phenomenological complexity and relatively low product maturity due to the limited amount of units deployed in varying operating conditions. Presently, design, construction and operational practices are largely influenced by high-cycle fatigue as a primary degradation parameter. Empirical (inspection) practices are deployed as the key instrument to identify and mitigate system anomalies and unanticipated defects, inherently a reactive measure. This paper describes a paradigm-shift from predominant singular methods into a more holistic and pro-active system approach to safeguard structural longevity. This is done through a short review of several synergetic Joint Industry Projects (JIP’s) from different angles of incidence on enhanced design and operations through coherent a-priori fatigue prediction and posteriori anomaly detection and -monitoring.

AimsKnowledge of patient preferences is vital for delivering optimal healthcare. This study uses utility measurement to assess the preferences of heart failure (HF) patients regarding quality of life or longevity. The utility approach represents the perspective of a patient; facilitates the combination of mortality, morbidity, and treatment regimen into a single score; and makes it possible to compare the effects of different interventions in healthcare. Methods and resultsPatient preferences of 100 patients with HF were assessed in interviews using the time trade-off (TTO) approach. Health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) was assessed with the EQ-5D and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Patients' own estimation of life expectancy was assessed with a visual analogue scale (VAS). Of the 100 patients (mean age 70 ± 9 years; 71% male), 61% attach more weight to quality of life over longevity; while 9% and 14% were willing to trade 6 and 12 months, respectively, for perfect health and attach more weight to quality of life. Patients willing to trade time had a significantly higher level of NT-proBNP and reported significantly more dyspnoea during exertion. Predictors of willingness to trade time were higher NT-proBNP and lower EQ VAS.ConclusionThe majority of HF patients attach more weight to quality of life over longevity. There was no difference between both groups with respect to life expectancy described by the patients. These insights enable open and personalized discussions of patients' preferences in treatment and care decisions, and could guide the future development of more patient-centred care. © 2013 Published on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. This paper outlines an investigation into the updating of fatigue reliability through inspection data by means of structural correlation. The proposed methodology is based on the random nature of fatigue fracture growth and the probability of damage detection and introduces a direct link between predicted crack size and inspection results. A distinct focus is applied on opportunities for utilizing inspection information for the updating of both inspected and uninspected (or uninspectable) locations.

Physiotherapists should take a primary role in relation to the prevention and management of all diseases that are associated with low levels of physical activity. The benefits of regular physical activity on health, longevity, and well being easily surpass the effectiveness of any drugs or other medical treatment. Physical activity has many beneficial effects on the body, helps prevent the development of many chronic diseases and is a useful complement to drug treatment in many diseases. As the importance of physical activity for health might well be underrated and undervalued even by manual therapists we describe the physiological consequences and health dangers of being inactive in this paper.

Europe faces significant challenges in maintaining its aging infrastructure due to extreme weather events, fluctuating groundwater levels, and rising sustainability demands. Ensuring the safety and longevity of infrastructure is a critical priority, especially for public organizations responsible for asset management. Digital technologies have the potential to facilitate the scaling and automation of infrastructure maintenance while enabling the development of a data-driven standardized inspection methodology. This extended abstract is the first phase of a study that examines current structural inspection methods and lifecycle monitoring activities of the Dutch public and private entities. The preliminary findings presented here indicate a preference for data-driven approaches, though challenges in data collection, processing, personnel resources and analysis remain. The future work will experiment integrating advanced tools, such as artificial intelligence supported visual inspection, on the existing inspection datasets of these authorities for quantifying their readiness levels to the fully automated digital inspections.

When everything is destined to be designed, design disappears into the everyday. We simply don’t see it anymore because it’s everywhere. This is the vanishing act of design. At this moment design registers its redundancy: our products, environments and services have been comprehensively improved. Everything has been designed to perfection and is under a permanent upgrade regime. Within such a paradigm, design is enmeshed with the capitalist logic of reproduction. But this does not come without conflicts, struggles and tensions. Chief among these is the situation of design in a planetary procession toward decay. Our dispense culture prompts a yearning for longevity. The computational compulsion to delete brings alive a desire to retrieve objects, ideas and experiences that refuse obsolescence. Society is growing more aware of sustainability and alert to the depletion of this world. For the ambitious designer, it’s time to take the next step: designing the future as a collective relation attuned to life.
