We investigated online intead of onsite working and found that adult workers generally see the benefits of screen meetings much more than students. Students seem to miss social contacts enormously. Adult employees now have the chance to integrate work and private life. A culture of working from home and informal care had already developed. But now there is a much broader understanding, even of employers who did not want their employees to work from home before.

Combining Performance-Based and Self-Reported Measures of Executive Functions: Are Both Meaningful in Predicting Study Success in Higher Education Students?

Abstract: Research in higher education has revealed a significant connection between executive functions (EFs) and study success. Previous investigations have typically assessed EFs using either neuropsychological tasks, which provide direct and objective measures of core EFs components such as inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, or self-report questionnaires, which offer indirect and subjective assessments. However, studies rarely utilize both assessment methods simultaneously despite their potential to offer complementary insights into EFs. This study aims to evaluate the predictive capabilities of performance-based and self-reported EFs measures on study success. Employing a retrospective cohort design, 748 first-year Applied Psychology students completed performance-based and self-report questionnaires to assess EFs. Maximum likelihood correlations were computed for 474 students, with data from 562-586 first-year students subsequently subjected to hierarchical regression analysis, accommodating pairwise missing values. Our results demonstrate minimal overlap between performance-based and self-reported EFs measures. Additionally, the model incorporating self-reported EFs accounted for 13% of the variance in study success after one year, with the inclusion of performance-based EFs raising this proportion to 16%. Self-reported EFs assessments modestly predict study success. However, monitoring levels of self-reported EFs could offer valuable insights for students and educational institutions, given that EFs play a crucial role in learning. Additionally, one in five students reports experiencing significant EFs difficulties, highlighting the importance of addressing EFs concerns for learning and study success.

Building a Brain

Many attempts have been made to build an artificial brain. This paper aims to contribute to the conceptualization of an artificial learning system that functionally resembles an organic brain in a number of important neuropsychological aspects. Probably the techniques (algorithms) required are already available in various fields of artificial intelligence. However, the question is how to combine those techniques. The combination of truly autonomous learning, in which "accidental" findings (serendipity) can be used without supervision, with supervised learning from both the surrounding and previous knowledge, is still very challenging. In the event of changed circumstances, network models that can not utilize previously acquired knowledge must be completely reset, while in representation-driven networks, new formation will remain outside the scope, as we will argue. In this paper considerations to make artificial learning functionally similar to organic learning, and the type of algorithm that is necessary in the different hierarchical layers of the brain are discussed. To this end, algorithms are divided into two types: conditional algorithms (CA) and completely unsupervised learning. It is argued that in a conceptualisation of an artificial device that is functional similar to an organic learning system, both conditional learning (by applying CA’s), and non-conditional (supervised) learning must be applied.

Safety Helmet 2.0

The Saxion University of Applied Sciences has recently started the project “Safety at Work”. The objective of the project is to increase safety at the workplace by applying and combining state of the art artifacts from the three disciplines: 1) Ambient Intelligence 2) Industrial & Product Design and 3) Smart Functional Materials. One strong factor that influences safety is human behavior. In the areas of marketing- and neuropsychology there are many examples of influencing human behavior [1, 2]. Interviews [3] with project partners and literature [4–7], show that often industrial workers do not wear all the prescribed safety gear (safety helmets, safety goggles, etc.). An especially big problem for industrial environments is that many workers are not willing to wear helmets simply because they are not comfortable [4, 5], or they expect the dangers of not wearing one to be negligible. Acknowledging this problem, we decided to introduce factors of marketing- and neuropsychology to Industrial Design students. These students participated in a full day creative session in which they attended a master class about the concepts of marketing- and neuropsychology, participated in a brainstorm and developed concepts of products that influence safe behavior. This paper focuses on the process of the brainstorm and concept development, it also gives an overview on the final concepts that delivered.
