Summary Project objectives This study fits into a larger research project on logistics collaboration and outsourcing decisions. The final objective of this larger project is to analyze the logistics collaboration decision in more detail to identify thresholds in these decisions. To reach the overall objectives, the first step is to get a clearer picture on the chemical and logistics service providers industry, sectors of our study, and on logistics collaboration in these sectors. The results of this first phase are presented in this report. Project Approach The study consists of two parts: literature review and five case studies within the chemical industry. The literature covers three topics: logistics collaboration, logistics outsourcing and purchasing of logistics services. The five case studies are used to refine the theoretical findings of the literature review. Conclusions Main observations during the case studies can be summarized as follows: Most analyzed collaborative relationships between shippers and logistics service providers in the chemical industry are still focused on operational execution of logistics activities with a short term horizon. Supply management design and control are often retained by the shippers. Despite the time and cost intensive character of a logistics service buying process, shippers tendering on a very regular basis. The decision to start a new tender project should more often be based on an integral approach that includes all tender related costs. A lower frequency of tendering could create more stability in supply chains. Beside, it will give both, shippers and LSPs, the possibility to improve the quality of the remaining projects. Price is still a dominating decision criterion in selecting a LSP. This is not an issue as long as the comparison of costs is based on an integral approach, and when shippers balance the cost criterion within their total set of criteria for sourcing logistics services. At the shippers' side there is an increased awareness of the need of more solid collaboration with logistics service providers. Nevertheless, in many cases this increased awareness does not actually result in the required actions to establish more intensive collaboration. Over the last years the logistics service providers industry was characterized by low profit margins, strong fragmentation and price competition. Nowadays, the market for LSPs is changing, because of an increasing demand for logistics services. To benefit from this situation a more pro-active role of the service providers is required in building stronger relationships with their customers. They should pay more attention on mid and long term possibilities in a collaborative relation, in stead of only be focused on running the daily operation.

News media in The Netherlands show great variety in the extent and ways, in which they realize media accountability online in terms of actor transparency, product transparency and feedback opportunities online. It is suggested that even those news rooms that seem to adhere to transparency and public accountability still need to explore the functionality and application of media accountability instruments (MAI). Both in terms of potentials and pitfalls, news rooms need to consider about what they want to be transparent and in what ways. To the extent that online innovations are visible, traditional news media seem to experiment, as is the case with newsroom blogs or the project of hyper local journalism Dichtbij.nl, part of the Telegraaf Company. Various news media have on-going projects on audience participation, online applications and distribution models. However, since many projects merely aim at finding new applications, processes, platforms and business models, it remains to be seen assess whether projects are indeed reasonably innovative and feasible at the same time. The development of an online and therefore immediate, archived, personalized and interactive context, offers practical and ethical challenges to Dutch journalism. These challenges bring shifts in its role and responsibility to society. It means that changes occur in what journalists are accountable for, as well as ways in how they are accountable. The Dutch media landscape lodges various professional accountability instruments like the press council and both profession-wide and news media specific codes of ethics, but some of these instruments receive only moderate support. Proactive openness is more an exception than the rule and may well be a distinctive indicator for quality journalism. Although news media often acknowledge the importance of media accountability offline and online, they often lack the resources or courage to use them or have different priorities. This ambiguous position may indicate that in relation to media accountability online, Dutch news media are between hope and fear: that it will either improve their relationship with the public and fuel professional quality, or ask too much of resources with too little benefit.

"Despite many efforts, people with a refugee background still have great difficulties to find a job on the Dutch labour market. This has adverse consequences for the economic independence of people with a refugee background, their social connections, personal development, health and general well-being, but also for employers as well as society in general. There are many sectors in the Dutch labour market with large, structural labor shortages, while at the same time much talent remains untapped. Meanwhile, more and more social enterprises in the Netherlands are stepping into this void, with the explicit goal to facilitate access to the labour market for people with a vulnerable position, including people with a refugee background. Consequently, these so-called work integration social enterprises (WISEs) are — by far — the dominant type of social enterprises in the Netherlands. Although the diversity between WISEs in terms of economic sectors, specific target groups and business models is large, the way in which they organize their key activities can serve as an example for regular employers, who still tend to think in problems rather than opportunities when it comes to employing people with a refugee background. At the same time, the impact of these social enterprises still remains relatively limited in comparison to the scale of the societal challenge. The aim of this study therefore is twofold: 1) to obtain a better understanding of the role of WISEs with regard to the sustainable labor participation of refugees, and 2) to assess the ways in which WISEs can scale their societal impact with respect to labour participation of refugees. These conference proceedings focus in particular on (new) forms of collaboration between WISEs and regular employers that aim to become more inclusive employers."

Welke rol kunnen ‘grassroots’ initiatieven spelen bij het tot stand brengen van de grondstoffentransitie? Idealiter voelen lokale gemeenschappen zich eigenaar van hun eigen materiaalkringloop en profiteren ze ervan door minder afval, betaalbare producten en zinvol werk. Stichting Stunt (sociale ondernemer in upcycling) experimenteert al enige jaren met hergebruiken van plastic afval en omwerken naar nieuwe producten die relatief gemakkelijk te maken zijn door mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt. Om een prominentere rol te kunnen spelen in de grondstoffentransitie, moeten leerwerkplaatsen en andere sociale ondernemingen de productie opschalen (in volume en naar meer hoogwaardige producten). Het doel van dit project is om inzicht te verkrijgen in hoe de belemmeringen die zij daarbij ervaren verminderd kunnen worden. De belemmeringen zijn o.a.: geen toegang tot goedkopere, robuuste machines voor upcycling; het productieproces is niet zomaar beheersbaar voor mensen met afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt; er zijn geschikte productontwerpen nodig. Hieruit volgt de vraag om een productconfigurator te maken. Dit heeft drie voordelen: -in de configurator kan een klant zelf een product configureren; -het genereren van de werkinstructies kan van daaruit worden geautomatiseerd; -de configurator kan direct feedback geven over de voetafdruk van het product en bv. de benodigde hoeveelheid afval. Stichting Stunt, The Upcycle en lectoraat Smart Sustainable Manufacturing van de Haagse Hogeschool willen samen een pilot uitvoeren om de haalbaarheid van dit principe te testen voor producten uit platen van gerecycled kunststof, omdat een robuuste platenpersmachine relatief gemakkelijk te ontwikkelen en bedienen is. Met behulp van de nieuwe tools kan het upcycle bedrijf aan de slag met: marktonderzoek, productontwerp en procesverbetering. De nieuwe tools zijn ook bruikbaar voor educatie, wat in de toekomst weer een belangrijke rol kan spelen bij het uitbouwen van een lokale upcycle community. Het project draagt hiermee bij aan optimaal hergebruik in lokale kringlopen.
