Transforming our societies towards a more sustainable future requires a good understanding of their citizens. This is of particular importance when considering the phenomenon of population ageing, which means that older people will constitute a significant share of society. The imperative for sustainable development arises from escalating concerns over environmental issues, necessitating tailored interventions for the heterogeneous group of older individuals. In this research, data collected using the SustainABLE-8 in Poland, North Macedonia, Romania, the Netherlands and Israel (N = 2318) were analysed in order to identify European typologies and their drivers for - and contributions to - sustainable practices. Several items of the SustainABLE-8 concerned (limiting) energy use at home as well as attitudes towards the use of sustainable energy and climate change. The study identified the existence of four major typologies, which differ in terms of their financial position, beliefs and behaviours in relation to the environment. These typologies cover 1) inactive people with limited financial resources, 2) inactive believers, 3) active and belief-driven people with limited financial resources, and 4) active and belief-driven people with financial resources. Each typology is separately discussed in terms of its specificities and ways how local governments could support their pro-environmental behaviours. The research is summarised with practical implications for industry, policymakers and environmental, social and governance strategies.

Our study elucidates collaborative value creation and private value capture in collaborative networks in a context of sustainability. Collaborative networks that focus on innovative solutions for grand societal challenges are characterized by a multiplicity and diversity of actors that increase the complexity and coordination costs of collective action. These types of inter-organizational arrangements have underlying tensions as partners cooperate to create collaborative value and compete to capture or appropriate value on a private or organizational level, resulting in potential and actual value flows that are highly diffuse and uncertain among actors. We also observe that network participants capture value differentially, often citing the pro-social (e.g. community, belonging, importance) and extrinsic benefits of learning and reputation as valuable, but found it difficult to appropriate economic or social benefits from that value. Differential and asymmetric value appropriation among participants threatens continued network engagement and the potential collective value creation of collaborative networks. Our data indicates that networked value creation and capture requires maintaining resource complementarity and interdependency among network participants as the network evolves. We develop a framework to assess the relational value of collaborative networks and contribute to literature by unpacking the complexities of networked value creation and private value capture in collaborative networks for sustainability.
Female entrepreneurship is still a limited phenomenon in European countries and its promotion ranks high on the EU policy agenda. Various frameworks have been offered to explain the main structural differences in entrepreneurship between men and women, emphasizing a variety of underlying factors. With a novel approach, this paper argues that due to a process of generation renewal the numerical difference between male and female entrepreneurship will diminish. Generation replacement is seen by sociologists and other social scientists as the motor behind cultural renewal. Our core interest in this paper in developing such a dynamic interpretation within the European context is the role of different generations (Silent Generation, Babyboomers, Generation X, Millennials). Younger cohorts of females are hypothesized to be more pro entrepreneurship and pro self-employment both in terms of attitudes, intentions, and behaviors, compared to older cohorts. They are furthermore assumed to converge with their male generation members in this regard. This paper empirically tests these two hypotheses by analyzing multi cross-sectional European data from the Eurobarometer over a span of thirty-five years (1980-2015). Results show that this generational approach sheds new light on explaining trends in female entrepreneurship. We find evidence of an increased growth in female entrepreneurship that can be attributed to generation replacement. This rise in total female entrepreneurship is characterized by diversity among European countries in the study. Positive attitudes toward entrepreneurship are essential to considering future self-employment. Education is a key factor. Female entrepreneurship, it is predicted, will become more prominent in Europe.
A continuation and update of the first ALT-ER project, which produced an app for early-years students that allowed them to express their feelings and tell stories related to pro-social and important developmental themes. This follow-up project will expand the software and themes, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, to reflect a wider range of experiences for young people.
MKB-bedrijven op het gebied van architectuur, gebiedsontwikkeling, ontwerp, digital design en technologie-ontwikkeling zien een nieuwe ‘markt’ ontstaan in de toenemende interesse voor de stedelijke commons. Dat zijn lokale gemeenschappen waarin mensen resources zoals energie, mobiliteit of woonruimte met elkaar delen en beheren, op een duurzame en pro-sociale manier. MKB-bedrijven zien kansen om in co-creatie met deze leefgemeenschappen nieuwe diensten en producten te ontwikkelen waarmee bewoners hun hulpbronnen gemeenschappelijk kunnen managen. MKB-bedrijven zien de ontwikkeling van stedelijke commons daarnaast als mogelijke oplossing voor urgente maatschappelijke vraagstukken en missies op het gebied van inclusieve woningbouw, duurzaamheid en de energietransitie. Voor het goed functioneren van de commons is een heldere articulatie en implementatie van hun onderliggende (maatschappelijke) waarden essentieel. Dit vraagt van MKB-bedrijven een zoektocht naar nieuwe manieren van gebieds- en technologie-ontwikkeling in samenwerking met bewoners. Een specifiek probleem daarbij betreft het vertalen van de commons-waarden naar een technologisch systeem dat het gezamenlijk beheer van hulpbronnen mogelijk maakt. Hiervoor wordt veel verwacht van digitale platformen en distributed ledgers technologies zoals de blockchain. Dit zijn databases die precies bijhouden wie wat bijdraagt en gebruikt. Ze koppelen zo’n boekhouding ook aan rechten, plichten en reputaties van de deelnemers. Bij de inrichting van zo’n systeem moeten ontwerpers steeds keuzes maken en rekening houden met spanningen tussen bijvoorbeeld privacy en transparantie, of individuele en collectieve belangen. In dit ontwerpproces stuiten MKBs op een kennishiaat. Hoe kunnen de onderliggende (maatschappelijke) waarden van commons-gemeenschappen 1) worden gearticuleerd en 2) vertaald naar een ontwerp voor de organisatie van een stedelijke commons met behulp van digitale platformen? Dit onderzoek verkent deze vragen in een fieldlab in Amersfoort, op twee ‘transfersites’ in Amsterdam en Birmingham, en met community of practice partners. Samen met hen worden een set design-principes en richtlijnen ontwikkeld voor het ontwerp van DLTs voor de stedelijke commons.
