from the repository of Utrecht University: "PURPOSE: Previously, a high prevalence of certain psychiatric disorders was shown among non-Western immigrants. This study explores whether this results in more prescriptions for psychotropic medication. METHODS: Data on dispensing of medication among adults living in the four largest Dutch cities in 2013 were linked to demographic data from Statistics Netherlands. Incident (i.e., following no dispensing in 2010-2012) and prevalent dispensing among immigrants was compared to that among native Dutch (N = 1,043,732) and analyzed using multivariable Poisson and logistic regression. RESULTS: High adjusted Odds Ratios (ORadj) of prevalent and high Incidence Rate Ratios (IRRadj) of incident dispensing of antipsychotics were found among Moroccan (N = 115,455) and Turkish individuals (N = 105,460), especially among young Moroccan males (ORadj = 3.22 [2.99-3.47]). Among Surinamese (N = 147,123) and Antillean individuals (N = 41,430), slightly higher rates of dispensed antipsychotics were found and the estimates decreased after adjustment. The estimates for antipsychotic dispensing among the Moroccan and Turkish increased, following adjustment for household composition. Rates for antidepressant dispensing among Turkish and Moroccan subjects were high (Moroccans: ORadj = 1.74 [1.70-1.78]). Among Surinamese and Antillean subjects, the rates for antidepressant dispensing were low and the ORadjlagged behind the IRRadj(Surinamese: 0.69 [0.67-0.71] vs. 1.06 [1.00-1.13]). Similar results were found for anxiolytics. For ADHD medication, lower dispensing rates were found among all migrant groups. CONCLUSIONS: The findings agree with earlier reports of more mental health problems among Moroccan and Turkish individuals. Surinamese/Antillean individuals did not use psychotropic drugs at excess and discontinued antidepressants and anxiolytics earlier. The data strongly suggest under-treatment for ADHD in all ethnic minority groups."

Car use in the sprawled urban region of Noord‐Brabant is above the Dutch average. Does this reflect car dependency due to the lack of competitive alternative modes? Or are there other factors at play, such as differences in preferences? This article aims to determine the nature of car use in the region and explore to what extent this reflects car dependency. The data, comprising 3,244 respondents was derived from two online questionnaires among employees from the High‐Tech Campus (2018) and the TU/e‐campus (2019) in Eindhoven. Travel times to work by car, public transport, cycling, and walking were calculated based on the respondents’ residential location. Indicators for car dependency were developed using thresholds for maximum commuting times by bicycle and maximum travel time ratios between public transport and car. Based on these thresholds, approximately 40% of the respondents were categorised as car‐dependent. Of the non‐car‐dependent respondents, 31% use the car for commuting. A binomial logit model revealed that higher residential densities and closer proximity to a railway station reduce the odds of car commuting. Travel time ratios also have a significant influence on the expected directions. Mode choice preferences (e.g., comfort, flexibility, etc.) also have a significant, and strong, impact. These results highlight the importance of combining hard (e.g., improvements in infrastructure or public transport provi-sion) and soft (information and persuasion) measures to reduce car use and car dependency in commuting trips.

In this study, we experimentally investigated the material flows of coloured dyes in coalescing small inkjet printed droplets of different volume ratios. With two differently coloured dyes, one in each droplet, we were able to distinguish the time-resolved contributions in dye transport across the coalescence bridge due to convection and diffusion. Droplets with differently coloured dyes were inkjet printed onto a glass substrate at a sufficiently large pitch such that they do not touch each other. Under UV exposure, the wetting of the substrate improves, causing the droplets to coalesce. Filmed at 50 fps, the coalescence and mixing of the droplets of volume ratios 1:1, 2:1 and 4:1 was followed. For equally sized drops, the mixing of the dyes shows good agreement with a 1D approximation of Fick’s second law along the central axes of the coalescing droplets with a diffusion coefficient D = 2 9 10-9 m2 s-1. For unequally sized droplets, convective flows from the small to the large droplet were demonstrated. The convective flows increase in size with increasing volume ratio, but only enter the droplet over a small distance. Complete mixing of the dyes in the unequally sized droplets is only reached after a long period and is diffusion controlled. At the initial moment of coalescence of unequally sized droplets, a small convective flow is observed from the large into the small droplets. Further investigation in this phenomenon is recommended.

Er wordt continu ‘reuzenarbeid’ verricht in het rivierengebied in het teken van hoogwaterbescherming, vaarwegbeheer, natuurontwikkeling en delfstoffenwinning. Bij veel van deze rivierprojecten maakt grondverzet het grootste deel uit. Het is onder andere bepalend voor de kosten, de CO2-footprint en de omgevingshinder van dergelijke projecten, en de ruimtelijke kwaliteit van het rivierlandschap. Slim omgaan met grond is daarom een sleutelfactor van duurzaam rivierbeheer. Het onderwerp heeft daarom een prominente plek in verschillende kennis- en innovatieagenda’s, zoals de KIA Landbouw, Voedsel en Water, de KIA Circulaire Economie, en de KIA van het Hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma. Deze articuleren een behoefte aan praktijkgericht onderzoek dat bijdraagt aan verduurzaming en kostenreductie van grondverzet, zodat grondverzet in 2030 energieneutraal is, de kosten per m3 tussen 2020 en 2030 aanzienlijk gedaald zijn en dat er in 2030 een gezonde slibeconomie is voor circulair materiaalgebruik. Desondanks moet er nog heel wat water door de Rijn voordat bovenstaande ambities in de praktijk kunnen worden gehaald. Het doel van dit project is om praktische inzichten en tools voor duurzaam grondmanagement in riviergebieden te ontwikkelen. Een consortium van 22 partijen (publiek, privaat, kennis) zal onder leiding van HAN lectoraat Sustainable River Management praktijkgericht onderzoek doen ter ondersteuning van technisch managers, ontwerpers, risicomanagers, projectmanagers en beheerders van dijken en uiterwaarden. Door middel van o.a. materiaalonderzoek, ontwerpend onderzoek en evaluaties worden praktische handvatten ontwikkeld voor realisatiestrategieën voor grondstoffenwinning volgens het DNA van de rivier, en het bruikbaar maken van sediment en gebiedseigen grond voor toepassing in de dijkenbouw. Bovendien worden verbeterde werkwijzen en tools ontwikkeld voor het op riviertakniveau afstemmen van vraag en aanbod van delfstoffen in natuur- en dijkversterkingsprojecten in het rivierengebied. Hiermee levert het project een concrete bijdrage aan de invulling van het Grondstoffenakkoord en het Rijksprogramma ‘Nederland Circulair in 2050’.
