Sports constitute a basis of fun for many (young) people and can contribute to important social developments. Sport can also yield opposite results:: arrogance, bullying, (sexual) intimidation, discrimination. Effects are largely influenced by the context of (youth) sport participation. In facing the reality of organized sport, creating a safe and pedagogical environment is not a priori inherent in sports. Many sports associations and clubs still primarily and too often focus on issues like schedules, organizing training and competitions, being financially sound and ensuring the continuity of their organizations. Specific policies for the prevention of harassment and abuse in sport hardly ever reach a local level. Experts speak of an implementation issue. In search for innovative approaches, Positive Behavior Support (PBS) was also introduced in the sport context. In this article, the preliminary evaluation of first experiences with PBS in local sport clubs (which are mostly run by volunteers) is described on the basis of seven insights. Conclusions can be drawn that PBS can be a guiding principal in sport clubs with organizational strength, although it needs specific translation within the context of sport. Further research is required to determine those significant adjustments.
Sports are activities enjoyed by many across the globe, regardless of age. The existence and promotion of youth sports has often been based on various assumptions about its value and role in society. Sports participation is assumed to be fun and good and is assumed to contribute to the development of young people. As a result, sports are often seen as an essential part of life for youth. Participation in sports and physical activity is assumed to help young people to develop in a context in which they are able to learn important positive societal values (Fraser-Thomas et al., 2005; Holt, 2008). Although there is a widespread belief in the positive dimensions of sports participation for young people, there is a need for research and theory that identifies and critically looks at the processes through which sports participation by youth is experienced and shapes their lives (Coakley, 2011). I return to this critical perspective after I elaborate on the ways sports are viewed as important effective activities for positive youth development.
This book provides a sample of studies and concepts created within the project Media ENriched Sport ExperienceS (MENSES). A project powered by Hilversum Media Campus, ZIGGO and Breda University of Applied Sciences. MENSES aims to create new media enriched sport experiences, by means of introducing innovative digital concepts combining media entertainment and live sport content. It wants to share building stones and blueprints to be accessed in Hilversum. As such it will help organizations to answer the question how live and broadcasted sport experiences can be enriched by means of new digital strategies. By combining interaction, transformation and data enrichment, the mediated and live sport events should be turned into a memorable sport experience
In 2021, Citython editions were held for the European cities of Eindhoven (Netherlands), Bilbao and Barcelona (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), and Lublin (Poland). Within this project, BUAS contributed to the organization of CITYTHON Eindhoven in cooperation with CARNET (an initiative by CIT UPC) and City of Eindhoven – an event which gives young talent the opportunity to work with mentors and experts for the development of innovative urban solutions. Participants of CITYTHON Eindhoven worked on three challenges:- Traffic safety in school zones - Travel to the campus- Make the city healthy The event took place between 18 May and 2 June 2021 with various experts, for example from ASML, City of Eindhoven and University of Amsterdam, giving inspirational talks and mentoring students throughout the ideation and solutions development process. The teams presented their solutions during the Dutch Technology Week and the winners were announced by Monique List-de Roos (Alderman Mobility and Transport, City of Eindhoven) on 2 June 2021. The role of BUAS within this project was to assist City of Eindhoven with the development of the challenges to be tackled by the participating teams, and find relevant speakers and mentors who would be supporting the students for the development of their solutions and jury members who would determine the winning teams. The project ended with a round table “Green and Safe Mobility for all: 5 Smart City(thon) Case studies” on November 17 organized as part of Smart City Expo World Congress 2021 in Barcelona. The central aim of this project is to increase the participation of people (all ages) with severe multiple disabilities (PIMD) in the field of sport, exercise and physical activity, by expanding the number of coaches and organizations who offer a Motor Activity Training Program in a professional and custom way. This aim will be achieved by the following activities:- Creating a more appropriate and varied offer of sport, exercise, and physical activity to increase the choice of the PIMD target group. - To develop a curriculum for MATP Coaches and Trainers (PE Teachers, Physical Therapists, etc). - To implement, test and contextualize a PIMD offer in 3 EU countries, this will be done with local stakeholders. - Strengthening the connection between sport, education and health care organizations to enable participation of the PIMD people in the field of sport, exercise, and physical activity. - Consortium members create a European network and exchange knowledge, including through best practices
The Spatial and Transport impacts of Automated Driving (STAD) project is conducted in close collaboration of some 30 triple helix partners. We would like to use the Pitstopvoucher to reflect on the collaboration between the academic partners (including Hogeschool Rotterdam) and private and public partners. This so-called intervision process involves 3 steps. In step 1 we identify the main issues to be discussed. The preliminary issues identified are (a) how can we further improve coherence at a program level between subproject and (b) how can we develop into a consortium in which public and private partners truly behave as partners rather than users and how to ensure a smooth interaction with academic partners. Step 2 is the preparation of a meeting including deciding on the main issue for discussion, the parties to be invited and the logistic organization. Step 3 is the meeting itself.
