Diagnosing teachers are teachers who perceive diagnostic information about students’ learning process, interpret these aspects, decide how to respond, and act based on this diagnostic decision. During supervision meetings about the undergraduate thesis supervisors make in-the-moment decisions while interacting with their students. We regarded research supervision as a teaching process for the supervisor and a learning process for the student. We tried to grasp supervisors’ in-the-moment decisions and students’ perceptions of supervisors’ actions. Supervisor decisions and student perceptions were measured with video-stimulated recall interviews and coded using a content analysis approach. The results showed that the in-the-moment decisions our supervisors made had a strong focus on student learning. Supervisors often asked questions to empower students or to increase student understanding. These supervising strategies seemed to be adapted to students’ needs, as the latter had positive perceptions when their control increased or when they received stimuli to think for themselves.

As most Universities around the world the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences conduct surveys (student evaluation monitor: STEM) among their students to evaluate the different courses and their teachers. At the Department of Media, Information and Communication the response by students tend to decline in the course of the year. In 2011-2012 with a limited enrolment of 900 first year students, 70% responded to the first survey conducted after the first exams in October and dropped to 26% in the last survey at the end of the first year (July 2012). In 2012-2013 (with the same amount of students) the response was respectively 75% and 30%. This might be due to several factors, such as the length of the questionnaire, the way the survey is spread (via e-mail to the students University account), the time of spreading the surveys (after the courses and exams) or simple due to lack of interest. Another problem of the surveys is found in the quest to limit the length of the questionnaires. Hereby, some relevant aspects to apprehend the success of students (or the return of the department) and the quality of the courses and teachers aren’t measured, such as: coherence between the courses, the students opinion about the form of education and exams, the connection between the evaluation and the exam results or other influential factors of student’s success. Given these difficulties and the fact that insight in all of the above mentioned aspects are crucial for both students and teachers and not in the least for the management, a new approach for evaluating is needed. An evaluating system that can uncover crucial information, for example to pinpoint the characteristics of dropout or long-term students in order to limit these, and/or improve the education/course. This paper will describe a pilot study wherein a first step towards a new way of evaluating is taken by separating the course- and teacher evaluation from the rest of the surveys by using an app/QR or website. Furthermore, the literature about in- or outside class surveys and student success will serve as a theoretical base for the discussion this pilot and is part of a broader PhD research.

Recently, there has been an increased interest in the well-being of students in higher education. Despite the widespread consensus on the importance of student well-being, a clear definition continues to be lacking. This study qualitatively examined the student perspective on the topic through semi-structured interviews at a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands (n = 27). A major recurring theme was well-being as a balance in the interplay between efforts directed towards studies and life beyond studies. This method of perceiving well- being deviates from theoretical definitions. Students mentioned various factors that influence their well-being. Responses ranged from personal and university related factors to external factors beyond their educational institution. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the well-being of students in higher education and provides suggestions for educational institutions, such as incorporating a holistic perspective on students and learning; and focus points for the development of policies and practices.

Social enterprises (SEs) can play an important role in addressing societal problems. SEs are businesses whose primary objective is to generate social impact (e.g. well-being, social wealth and cohesion, and ecology) through a market-based model. SEs achieve this through a hybrid business model, trading-off financial and social value creation objectives. SEs typically face higher costs, for example because of ethical sourcing principles and/or production processes centering around the needs of workers who are vulnerable or hard-to-employ. This results in SEs’ struggling to scale-up due to their relatively costly operating model. Traditional management techniques are not always appropriate, as they do not take into account the tensions between financial and social value creation objectives of SEs. Our project examines how continuous improvement, and in particular the philosophy and tools of Lean can be harnessed to improve SEs competitiveness. Lean organizations share many values with SEs, such as respect for people, suggesting a good fit between the values and principles of Lean and those of SEs. The consortium for this project is a cooperation between the research groups Improving Business and New Marketing of the Center of Expertise Well-Being Economy and New Entrepreneurship and the minor Continuous Improvement of AVANS Hogeschool, and the SME companies Elliz in Company and Ons Label. The project consists of two phases, an exploratory phase during which the question “in what ways can the philosophy and tools of Lean be used by Social Enterprises?” will be addressed. Interviews and focus groups will be conducted with multiple SEs (not only partners). Participant observation will be conducted by the students of the minor Continuous Improvement at the partner SEs. During the second phase, the implementation of the identified principles and tools will be operationalized through a roadmap. Action research will be conducted in cooperation with the partner SEs.
The increasing concentration of people in urban environments in an era of globalisation means that social, economic, and environmental resources for living and working are under pressure. Urban communities experience increased stress levels due to inadequate and overburdened infrastructure and services, challenges due to ethnic and cultural diversity, socio-economic inequalities as well as the impact of environmental degradation. For these communities to build resilience under these circumstances therefore requires a multipronged approach. The underlying question this project will answer is: “What are the key characteristics of experiencescapes that contribute to resilience-building in communities?” The project will dive into the identification of building blocks of experiencescapes and roles of relevant actors that can support communities in building resilience. Within the context of a multidisciplinary approach, this project applies a range of qualitative research methods, such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant observation, storytelling techniques, life stories, as well as various biometric quantitative methods, available through the experience lab of BUas. The outcome of the project will enable practitioners and researchers alike in various sectors to understand what and how they can contribute to creating an environment in which people can meaningfully interact in a way that builds resilience in communities. This outcome is communicated not only through academic publications and conference contributions, but also through public reports and a handbook for practitioners and students. These reports and handbooks support identification and application of building blocks of experiencescapes that support building resilience in communities. Finally, the knowledge generated in the project will contribute to the development of curricula of various educational programmes at Breda University of Applied Sciences by expanding the scope of experience design into the area of people-to-people relationships.
Create and test a Virtual Reality emergency trainer that is able to optimise the abcde emergency training method for general practitioner students.In this project a Virtual Reality application is created and tested that is aimed to contribute to the learning goals and engagement with current emergency training methods. In addition, it aims at having an added value to live simulation training courses and existing media used for training (ranging from online instruction videos to interactive games). How to utilise the characteristics of Virtual Reality (senses, interaction, connection & manipulation) and what scenarios and simulation fit an interactive 360 VR simulation? In addition, we will create a training variant in which actors are captured through volumetric recordings.
