Across Dutch municipalities, unusual collaborative initiatives emerge that aim to stimulate the creation of value from municipal waste resources. Circular economy literature proposes that experimentation competences are important for developing initiatives towards circular business models and a wide range of innovation frameworks and business model toolkits have been developed to support the development of circular business models based on experimentation.However, more insight is needed to understand how experimentation contributes to the development of urban upcycling initiatives, in particular those where collaborative business models are created. Literature suggest that business model experimentation occurs differently in various collaborative contexts. For example, depending on the type of initiating focal actors involved, collaborative business models develop along different pathways Therefore, we aim to understand how experimentation occurs in various types of collaborative urban upcycling initiatives and we investigate the following research question: How do stakeholders in collaborative urban upcycling initiatives use experimentation to develop circular business models?

With the rise of chronic diseases as the number one cause of death and disability among urban populations, it has become increasingly important to design for healthy environments. There is, however, a lack of interdisciplinary approaches and solutions to improve health and well-being through urban planning and design. This case study offers an HCI solution and approach to design for healthy urban structures and dynamics in existing neighborhoods. We discuss the design process and design of ROOT, an interactive lighting system that aims to stimulate walking and running through supportive, collaborative and social interaction.

De betrokken lectoren beogen het praktijkgericht onderzoek rond de gebouwde omgeving op hogescholen te verbinden en te stroomlijnen. Dit doen ze teneinde bij te dragen aan de energietransitie: met duurzame bronnen voorzien in onze energievoorziening. Een belangrijk instrument om de expertise van de lectoren te delen is een digitale onderzoekskaart, die beschikbaar is via: http://www.nlurbanenergy.nl. Daarnaast is er behoefte aan meer inzicht als het gaat om termen als vraagarticulatie en onderzoekssamenwerking. Daartoe hebben we een verkennende studie uitgevoerd naar praktijkgericht onderzoek binnen het domein Urban Energy. Hiervoor interviewden we de betrokken lectoren en ondernemers uit het innovatief MKB. CILOLAB contributes to the transition of the UFT-system towards zero emission city logistics in 2025 by examining, developing and enabling alternatives for urban logistics activities. Specifically, CILOLAB focuses on the transferability and scaling-up of successful logistics initiatives; i.e. concepts that facilitate decoupling between transport towards and in cities. CILOLAB is an action-driven partnership where cities cooperate with transport operators, interest groups, research institutes and societal partners and collaboratively develop new approaches for urban logistical solutions. Through continuous monitoring and impact assessment these solutions are evaluated and further developed within this experimentation environment, all contributing to the CILOLAB ambition.

City labs are a promising form of smart governance, providing a ‘smart interface’ between public and private actors, including citizens, through co-creation. Recent scholarship sees ‘experimentation’ - implementing projects with the goal to learn rather than to achieve a predetermined outcome – as a key feature of city labs and their contribution to the adaptability of an urban region. However, in practice, city lab practitioners struggle with this role and need guidance on how to set up, carry out and learn from experiments. TEK4Labs aims to enhance scientific understanding of the conditions required for city labs to take up their experimental role in governance successfully, as well as to provide practical guidance for city labs by developing an ‘experiment kit’. The project will take a transdisciplinary action research approach, combining literature review, survey and interview methods with co-creation design workshops and field testing involving city lab practitioners. TEK4Labs will be carried out by ICIS-UM researchers in collaboration with Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and its network of Dutch city labs.
