Dames en heren, het is mij een grote eer dat u met zo velen gekomen bent om te luisteren naar mijn openbare les in het kader van mijn benoeming tot lector product design & engineering. Ik begrijp best dat u gekomen bent, want product design & engineering is belangrijk. Zonder product design & engineering was u hier tenslotte niet eens geweest. De auto, trein of bus waarmee u hier gekomen bent, zijn mede tot stand gekomen dankzij product design & engineering. Dat u mij ook achter in de zaal kunt horen, heeft u te danken aan ditzelfde vakgebied. En dat u aan het eind van deze openbare les mogelijk pijn in uw rug heeft door een oncomfortabele zit is er ook een gevolg van. Kortom: product design & engineering is een belangrijk vakgebied waarmee we in ons dagelijks bestaan voortdurend geconfronteerd worden, aangenaam of niet. Mijn voordracht valt in drieën uiteen. Eerst sta ik stil bij de titel: Van vuistbijl tot mobieltje. Aan de hand van deze objecten illustreer ik de historische achtergronden van het vakgebied product design & engineering. Daarna ga ik dieper in op het begrip ontwerpen. Het derde deel van mijn openbare les gaat over de ambitieuze plannen van de kenniskring product design & engineering. Ik sluit mijn openbare les af met het mobieltje, maar hoe blijft nog even een verrassing.

Studenten van de opleiding Realisatie van Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein onderzoeken al jaren ongebaande paden om voor complexe problemen innoverende oplossingen te vinden en daarmee aansprekende projecten te realiseren. In deze projecten staat eco-engineering centraal, het ontwerpen met natuurlijke technieken. Dit boek geeft een beschrijving van de zoektocht naar nieuwe opdrachten vanuit de major Realisatie. Met ideeën en experimenten met olifantsgras bij Schiphol, het Dobberend bos en de ontaarde boom, die in detail worden beschreven.

The need of an adaptive sustainable solution for the increased land scarcity, growing urbanization, climate change and flood risks resulted in the concept of the floating urbanization. In The Netherlands this new type of housing attracted the interest of local authorities, municipalities and water boards. Moreover, plans to incorporate floating houses in the urban planning have already been developed. However, the knowledge gap regarding the potential effect on the water quality halts the further development of the floating houses. This paper shows the results of a water quality measurement campaign, as part of the national program “Knowledge for climate”, at a small floating houses project in Delft and serves as a case study for addressing the environmental-ecological knowledge gap on this topic.

The pace of introduction of new technology and thus continuous change in skill needs at workplaces, especially for the engineers, has increased. While digitization induced changes in manufacturing, construction and supply chain sectors may not be felt the same in every sector, this will be hard to escape. Both young and experienced engineers will experience the change, and the need to continuously assess and close the skills gap will arise. How will we, the continuing engineering educators and administrators will respond to it? In the current discourses on sustainable development, one can discern two main intellectual cultures: an analytic one focusing on measuring problems and prioritizing measures, (Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Mass Flow Analysis (MFA), etc.) and; a policy/management one, focusing on long term change, change incentives, and stakeholder management (Transitions/niches, Environmental economy, Cleaner production). These cultures do not often interact and interactions are often negative. However, both cultures are required to work towards sustainability solutions: problems should be thoroughly identified and quantified, options for large change should be guideposts for action, and incentives should be created, stakeholders should be enabled to participate and their values and interests should be included in the change process. The paper deals especially with engineering education. Successful technological change processes should be supported by engineers who have acquired strategic competences. An important barrier towards training academics with these competences is the strong disciplinarism of higher education. Raising engineering students in strong disciplinary paradigms is probably responsible for their diminishing public engagement over the course of their studies. Strategic competences are crucial to keep students engaged and train them to implement long term sustainable solutions.

Antibiotics are a factor in developing antibiotic resistance in the environment. Outbreaks due to pathogens and resistant bacteria are an emerging issue in this decade. Resistance of Escherichia coli to two groups of antibiotics has been revised recently by the World Health Organization (WHO). These data showed that bacteria have already developed resistance to third and fourth group of antibiotics. The WHO report on surveillance and antibiotics consumption evaluation showed that antibiotic consumption varies in EU countries. Outbreaks have increased in parallel to these data depending on country, season, sex, and age group. This chapter revises the routes of spreading and surveillance of E. coli. There is a particular focus on water sources including hospitals, urban wastewater treatment plants (UWTPs), diffuse sources, and water reuse. Extensively revised data are given on the control techniques by biological and advanced processes. The emerging issue of gene transfer control in parallel to the control of bacteria is expressed. A detailed literature survey of emerging technologies of photocatalysis and nanoparticles is given.

The scope of technology has expanded towards areas such as sports and vitality, offering significant challenges for engineering designers. However, only little is known about the underlying design and engineering processes used within these fields. Therefore, this paper aims to get an indepth understanding of these type of processes. During a three-day design competition (Hackathon), three groups of engineers were challenged to develop experience-able prototypes in the field of sports and vitality. Their process was monitored based on the Reflective Transformative Design process (RTD-process) framework, describing the various activities part of the design process. Groups had to keep track of their activities, and six group reflection-sessions were held. Results show that all groups used an open and explorative approach, they frequently swapped between activities, making them able to reflect on their actions. While spending more time on envisioning and creating a clear vision seem to relate to the quality of the design concept.

The paper summarizes two models for engineering education, as discussed in earlier papers. The first model (Corporate Curriculum) aims to bring Industry into the school, while the second model (I3) intends to bring the school into Industry. The contribution of the presented models to the Bologna Declaration and to the Renaissance Engineer idea are discussed.

In this paper we will describe and present the results of an experiment at the Fontys University of Professional Education in which engineering students work together with students from other disciplines in a multidisciplinary group at the end of their study on a real-life environmental problem outside the university. Since 1994 there has been a possibility for engineering students to graduate in this way, in a multidisciplinary group. First a rough sketch will be given of the background and the educational model. In this sketch attention will be paid to the different role which the student as well as the teacher play in this kind of education. The characteristics of this model will be explained. Then it will be made clear what the results were in the past years with respect to content as well as to the learning of skills. At the end some conclusions will be given.

Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) is a technique which uses the influence of strong electric fields to manipulate the break-up of a liquid, pumped through a capillary nozzle, into droplets. In this work, an extended description of a specific high flow EHDA mode, known as the simple-jet mode, is presented. In it, a review of different works published about the mode is presented as well as results about the droplet population generated with varicose and whipping break-up using water as the atomized liquid. Additionally, experiments were conducted to investigate whether such atomization method could be used to improve the efficiency of droplet inair evaporation, using a single effect evaporation chamber coupled with a EHDA multinozzle system functioning as a shower head. The liquid used in these experiments was a solution of water and NaCl (35 g L−1) to simulate sea water average concentrations. The results have shown that, the manipulation of the droplet diameter, droplet size distribution and spray angle, provided by EHDA, could improve the droplet evaporation efficiency by up to 40% when combinedwith, e.g. forced convection and higher inlet temperatures.
